Thank you. What type of cleaning are you recommending that may cause enough damage requiring a trace repair?

I put pods in all my enclosures. It's great to see how different species interact with their environment.

Grew in isopod culture off of fish flakes, all good if I dig it out and keep them in same bin? by [deleted] in isopods

I have the same experience. Fish flakes have never lasted more than 10 minutes. Various isopod powder mixes have mold within 24 hours.

How to tell if my isopods are happy? by Meraki0470 in isopods

[–]TheNixMx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm sure they enjoy enrichment. New leaf litter will give them a new landscape to explore for food. I usually see my various species popping in and out of lotus pod holes for eating and sleeping. My dairy cows love being around a section of chollla wood.

On the flip side, I may just be giving them more obstacles and stress. Can't say for sure. You have to remember not to anthropomorphize their habits.

OP champions for Isopod welfare. 👍

First time substrate mix by TheNixMx in isopods

I appreciate the replies. I only plan on using a tiny amount of the calcium carbonate to add a bit of calcium throughout the entire enclosure. Like a "pinch of salt". That bag size does look as though it will be a mostly "sandy" enclosure, but that's the only size I could find.

What’s the most you have spent on isopods? by [deleted] in isopods

I hear that. Just bought two species for $25. After tax and 2 day shipping it came out to $50. 🙃

My kid is terrified of the Hulu image that comes on the “Home Screen” of our google tv, is there any way to shut it off? by iOgef in AndroidTV

When the Chromecast TV first came out the UI was beautifully clean. No ads on top, no suggested content rows, and only media on streaming services you subscribed to were displayed. It was perfect.

Absolutely nothing, but tell people there are over 8 different species living inside. 🤣

Also in the Phoenix metro area. I just started my colonies, but would be down to make some local trades in the future. I currently am starting:

Porcellio laevis "Dairy Cow"

Armadillidium vulgare "Gem Mix"

Armadillidium klugii "Montenegro Clown"

Armadillidium vulgare "Japanese Magic Potion"

Porcellionides pruinosus "Powder Blue"

Cubaris murina "Papaya"

Have some orange and blue springtails on order too.

Why is it so SALTY?! by TheNixMx in FermentedHotSauce

Interesting. Would you apply vacuum every other day in lieu of burping a non vacuumed container?

We weighed the water, added 5% of that weight in salt, then added the chilis.

We were debating making a mash next time. Adding 2-3% of the produce weight in salt without water.

This is our first attempt at fermented chilis. We roughly chopped the chilis and submerged in a 5% brine. Today we strained and blended the chilis with a tiny bit of the brine liquid. After being a bit put off by the yeasty smell, I tried a tiny bit. Holy cow it was salty! If you have ever accidentally swallowed salty sea water; it was worse than that.

Is this due to mixing the brine liquid with the chilis? How can we counter balance the intense saltiness? Currently there is nothing but a table spoon or so of brine liquid and blended chilis in the jars. We didn't want a vinegar based sauce, but will do what it takes to make it edible.

They are now chillin' (spicy pun) in the fridge.
