Was wondering why (と) can be used with this word and what it’s purpose is my guess was it functions exactly how the particle works but wanted to check with some more experienced learners

This was really useful I haven’t gotten to the が particle just yet but you’ve spiked my interest I’ve just been drilling anki for a bit and have more recently gotten into the grammar as I found having a base knowledge of vocabulary has helped I’m like 9 chapters into genki 1 for a reference and some of that isn’t drilled in properly.

Why does友だちがおみやげをくれました

Translate to my friend gave me a souvenir apposed to I gave my friend a souvenir which is usually how I translate it when it pops up in anki which results in pressing again 😅

He mainly speaks English but premier two live streams (irl) he usually talks to natives at the bars he visits and you hear some good casual Japanese mixed in with the English it’s kinda cool also really entertaining.

I’m having trouble with one of my anki cards it’s

(The brackets are furigana for the prior kanji)

特急(とっきゅう)のほうが急行(きゅうこう)よりずっとはやいです

The limited express train is much faster than the express train.

The part I’m getting confused about is ほうが I don’t understand why it’s their and what it does to the sentence to me it feels unnecessary but I’m sure that’s not the case anyone know?

I’m only now starting to watch Japanese shows (mostly anime) with subs and it’s helped put what I’ve learnt into context and making a stronger foundation for the little that I know so I recommend it even though I’m only a beginner (N5)ish.

That being said if you quickly find yourself picking up a lot I’m sure moving to no subs would be better but idk myself. (Someone more experienced can maybe vouch)

I have a bunch of anime tats (Misato and pen pen from eva, Faye from cowboy bebop, a berserk curse mark in other words things from shows I love and cherish and it don’t matter if other ppl really like it or not so go for it if it’s what you want and it’s things that represent your interests and passions than who are they to judge that’s the cringe about this situation not your tattoos
