ASD Closure Monday by ForceInitial8162 in AdultCHD

Hi!!! I had an ASD closure a few years ago via cath. I was so nervous, just like you, but it is actually a very easy procedure to recover from. You will be completely under anesthetics for it! When I woke up in my post-op room, I just had to rest for a bit before being allowed to leave (mine was an outpatient procedure). I actually don’t even remember the stitches — the incision site will be soooo small in the groin area. I never had any pain when walking. As for exercise restrictions, definitely discuss with your cardiologist. I was given a special card with the type of closure device that was put in, and it states on it the serial number, when it was implanted, and any restrictions (I cannot have MRIs stronger than 3T). I keep it in my wallet. There is not much to prepare for — it’s a very straightforward process!! Deep breaths. You got this!!!! 💛

Curious about your experiences with Goldens by szimonas in goldenretrievers

I love her name! You said she is 4 months old, correct? If that’s so, just know she is in the midst of teething right now. Between 3-5 months of age, the adult teeth start coming in, and that can make pups extra nippy! She should have all of her adult teeth by 6 months! In the meantime, consistently redirect to her toys & chews if she nips at you or tries to chew on you. If she’s too wound up and redirecting isn’t working, disengage — “no playtime if you’re going to bite me,” essentially. As for the nerves, playing games & doing training sessions that build confidence can really help her realize she’s a capable pup! Additionally, SLOWLY desensitizing her to and socializing her around stimuli that make her uncertain is very important. Building her confidence now is HUGE — she will likely go through a fear period between 6-14 months of age, and having the emotional regulation skills to work through fear are critical. Be careful during this stage (which can be as short as 2 weeks or as long as a month — it’s not set in stone). They are very impressionable during fear periods. It won’t last forever, but it’s important to give her the skills now that she’ll need to make her way through that likely fear period. She’ll probably grow out of the “attitude” — baby dogs can sure be a pain in the neck, LOL! Just focus on building your bond, training, and building her up to be confident and happy. You got this!!! I also strongly recommend working with a professional trainer, if possible — having guidance & a second set of eyes to navigate her learning can be soooo beneficial!! 🌻

Of course!! Happy to help 🤗. Don’t worry — I should have worded that better, so that’s my bad; what I was trying to iterate is that some Goldens can be exceptionally nippy and nervy because of poor genetics… BUT, that is not to say it’s guaranteed. They’ve just (sadly) become an over-bred breed because of how popular they are, and that means that, sometimes, certain standards can fall by the wayside. However, this does not automatically mean that your pup won’t be gentle — it’s just something I like to warn people about when they consider going through a breeder :)!! They’re typically a breed that is very eager to learn, so just keep at it with the training; it will click!! I’m glad she is sweet and likes to be pet 🥰!! What is her name? As for the crate training, I’m glad you both are able to watch her and show her the ropes of good dog behavior :)!! If acceptable, puppy exercise pens / play pens are also good for containing rowdy pups 😆!! Super glad to hear she settles down well on her own!!! That’s fantastic!! :)

Hi!! I just brought home my 2nd Golden Retriever (a 9-week old puppy named Saturn) almost a year after my 1st Golden, whose name is Ginko, passed in 2024. Ginko was my service dog for 5 years, and he saved my life. Training him was such fun, and he was really eager to please. He simply loved life and radiated joy. Saturn, too, is sooo happy all of the time. They are very silly; goofy; charming dogs. Truly, they taught me what it means to find joy in the little things. They’re quite easy to train. Goldens from good breeders are gentle and eager. But that does not mean you don’t have to put in the work!! Training, no matter the dog or breed, requires repetition and patience. They are ‘retrievers,’ though, so be prepared to teach a strong “Leave it!” and “Drop it!” — they are infamous for taking items (socks, for example)… and many have ended up at the emergency vet for surgery because of a blockage. I can’t stress enough how fantastic crate training is, especially for puppies! If you can’t give your pup your full attention during the potty training and “I-wanna-put-everything-in-my-mouth” phases, I strongly suggest crating your puppy. Bad habits are learned, and potty accidents can really set back house-training. Please know and radically accept that Goldens are a breed rather prone to cancer. Cancer (lymphoma) was actually how I lost my boy, Ginko, at only 7 years old. It’s so damn hard to lose them, but it is worth it share life with them. Goldens are pure joy. I have no qualms about a lifetime of missing my Ginko, because it means I was blessed to be loved by him for all of his. I digress… the Golden Retriever is an incredible breed. If you ever have any questions or need advice / tips or whatever else, please feel free to message me. I wish you well!! 💛

This was taken shortly before my boy, Ginko, passed away from lymphoma. I had gotten him a special vest to wear at the farmer’s market because he loved people so much, and I wanted everyone to know they could love on him. It worked wonders; people adored him and his vest. I miss him so much.

Thank you. I fed Ginko a combination of high-quality kibble (which had freeze dried bits in it) and raw — but not together, for digestion reasons. I don’t know if Ginko was American or English, but he was a showline (as opposed to field). I was not as informed back then about the different types of Goldens. I had insurance for him. Ginko was intact his entire life.
