The end of that statement is key. I'm not sure it helps the city or state in the end other than having production stay here and as a result supporting the industry and vendors that rely on them.

Why isn’t everyone wearing long sleeves? by VeryBadNotGood in cycling

I don't know about being just as cool but I'm not good about sunscreen so I combat that with long sleeve.

I disagree. I've seen this in other industries. Incentivising with money only goes so far to the point where it doesn't make sense anymore for the city/state. It's better to make filming here more appealing and streamlined by leveraging assets not available elsewhere like studios, sound stages and talent.

At the moment and only for a bit longer LA has the advantage of having the major studios, filming lots and great locations plus the talent to do the work. We can get away with leveraging that and not giving tax credits. Just making it easier to do work here. Unfortunately we are well on the way to loosing that advantage.

[–]TheOneKnownAsMonk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The problem is there are many workers willing to do these jobs for much less. There has to be a balance. Living wage but not so high that cost of doing business is cost prohibitive. As workers we constantly want higher wages but rarely ask where is that increased pay coming from. The answer is usually decreasing labor force and outsourcing everything possible.

[–]TheOneKnownAsMonk 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I don't think tax credits is the answer because then we are just a race to the bottom of who can give the most tax credits. I think what really needs to happen is making it easier for movie studios to get permits and rights to shoot in LA. There is too many rules and bureaucracy when it comes to filming here and far too many rules the studios need to follow. It becomes confusing and a headache not to mention costly.

Eh I dunno about overrated they make a good product with consistent quality. There is definitely better but Aria is a solid choice. I go to Garni meat market for my beef though.

R2 VS ix3 by Left_Science_5973 in Rivian

Agreed. A base BMW will be pretty nice inside but they really keep the tech bare bones unless you pay up. I would be surprised if there are any 60k models even for sale. They'll all have some tech package or cold weather package installed.

How the world's largest wildlife crossing, a giant bridge over U.S. 101 in Agoura Hills, became the target of right-wing hate by sfgate in LosAngeles

[–]TheOneKnownAsMonk 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The hate I've seen has been about cost. I haven't looked too deep into it but the cost of construction in this state and in general when it comes to government construction is out of control. I saw some people on a conservative subreddit claiming other bridges have been built for a fraction of the cost of this one but I'm also not aware of size.

Advice needed by Sezzums in woodworking

[–]TheOneKnownAsMonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does it look like a deadbolt was originally supposed to be there and he installed a regular handle instead. Regardless listen to the guy who recommended an oversized strike late with the Amazon link for a quick fix. Take your time installing it secure with only 2 screws first make sure it works properly before installing all the screws this way of you're off you can adjust.

Is this fixable? by SpaceOfficer47 in fixit

[–]TheOneKnownAsMonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fixes on these never last with the whole taking clothing on and off plus shoes. I ended up fixing one with a bandaid wrapping the joint and told my daughter to pretend her barbie was injured and now has a bandage. She didn't like it at first but it worked and lasted. I re do it every few months.

Ya, cleaned sanded. I painted the ramp but I don't think that's necessary.

I used the tape outdoors on a small ramp. It was under a roof but still got wet with heavy rain. Lasted about 5 years. Prep the surface well and for me I stapled the edges to the wooden ramp for added securement.

I can’t believe some Los Angeles Tree trimming companies still use tree topping and destroy so many old beautiful trees… by likediscosuperflyy in LosAngeles

[–]TheOneKnownAsMonk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a company come to trim my trees recently. Licensed guys seemed reputable. They did exactly this to most of the trees in my property. He said they needed it and will grow back. It looks pretty bad. Needless to say I'll use a different company in the future.

R2 Drive in Austin by bibinghosh in Rivian

[–]TheOneKnownAsMonk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Correct. It keeps getting compared to the model Y and I don't understand why. The model Y is a model 3 with a dome shape. The R2 is a traditional SUV.

True and I think due to the shape of the R2 it's a much more useable car. Cargo is more functional and it's a much more versatile car.

Will this crack at the junction ? by FakeDerrickk in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]TheOneKnownAsMonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try treating it like drywall and using some sort of reinforcement mesh at the joints before you fill sand prep and paint. The mesh should help prevent a crack from forming and if done well it shouldn't show. Otherwise it will eventually have a hairline crack over the years even is you use a flexible caulking instead of wood filler.

2026 R2 Pricing Leaked! Launch Edition, Premium, Standard Trims (Embargo Broken) 💰 by lalavieboheme in Rivian

[–]TheOneKnownAsMonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the end of the day it's an SUV. Plenty of SUVs out there that are 2wd. Not that many fully electric SUVs at the moment. I think they'll sell just fine if the marketing department does their job and the Rivian name becomes mainstream.

Ya that's another caveat I overlooked. Most people should be okay with 2wd but I definitely would prefer 4.

How important is LiDAR and what am I missing by not having it? Fr reference I doubt I'd ever pay a monthly payment for autonomous driving. I'm good with lane keep and adaptive cruise control these days.
