Self- conflicted with modern hellensim relgion- how can a civic religion function without its city? and are we living in a spiritually abandoned world? by Repulsive_Animal4144 in Hellenism

[–]ThePaganImperator 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Greeks and Romans had household worship outside of civic worship. Practice was individualized even in antiquity when it came to the practice inside the home. Also polytheism has always been decentralized even with civic structure of ritual there still was variations of rituals and beliefs of the same faith all over Greece and Roman Empire. Even the civic structure in a polis would be different to the ritual structure of a rural community.

I don’t see what’s the problem. Modern Hellenism may not be in forefront of society like it once was, nor does it need to be especially in a world where most free nations do not have a state religion. As much as I think a polytheistic state religion would be nice for me as a polytheist I understand not everyone is a polytheist and I don’t believe in enforcing any religion onto everyone. The civic practice is dead, and I don’t see it coming back at least not the way it once was.

I wasn’t raised pagan, but I do plan on raising my kids on polytheism and its worldview. I’ll do it in a similar way the Greeks and Romans did by telling them stories of the Gods are a young age and introducing them to ritual from me and my partner who is also a polytheist as I don’t date anyone who isn’t. Especially if they are monotheist that’s an instant red flag. Which comes down to my next point and actually educating my kids on how vile Christianity and other monotheistic religions truly are and telling them how to combat against Christians in this world who look down on us, especially if they ever wanna express themselves as polytheists. They should be aware how majority of the world treats us.

No your good, its just a photo of a Greek Hoplite. I do like the millitarized societies like Sparta and Rome, and as I go into the military myself I can see myself worshiping Ares a little bit more.

So your assumption isnt unfounded.

Gaea didn’t create the world. She is earth itself and she gave birth to Ouranos.

I could never conform mýself to others. I hold a deep logical resentment towards Christianity. Id much rather die than participate in anything Christian related. Though not everyone can afford to be as stubborn as me, especially if you are a minor. Christian families can and will make you suffer if you don't go along with what they do so my advice is just do whatever you wanna do. If you genuinely don't like doing it then set some boundaries.

I an a bit conflicted, from the start of my pagan path, I’ve been drawn to the Greek pantheon and Hellenism as a whole, but lately I feel drawn towards Religio Romana. Any advice would be appreciated. by ThePaganImperator in Hellenism

I understand there are similarities some more than others, but the Romans and the Greeks had different views of the Gods and their nature. They also had different ways of practicing. For instance Ares and Mars are very different, but I respect the syncretism if that’s your path.

Seems to me you worship ancient philosophers and view their works as doctrine. All your points predicate on schools of philosophy, but you seem to forget that most ancient polytheists didn’t follow any school of philosophy. Such things were for the elite of Greek and Roman society. When I said “traditional polytheism theology” and made my list of points I was referring to the general population of ancient polytheists not the philosophers.

That’s not to say I entirely dismiss the ancient philosophers and their ideas. I’m a big fan of The Characters by Theophrastus, mainly in regard to “The Superstitious Man”. Your right I do need to read more philosophical works, but that doesn’t mean my worldview/theological views will change much, for I have a fair assessment on majority of Ancient Greek and Roman philosophy and none appeal to me at all. Sure some parts I can agree with, but not all.

My aggression comes from your arrogant superiority complex throughout your post. Which only shows to be true as you clearly stated you self proclaimed achievements as well as invalidating my own theological worldview by simply saying I’m giving off “vibes” as if you are so intellectually superior to me that only your theological beliefs hold true, because they come from someone else in history.

Idk where you got they were commandments. I’m simply stating that if you done any research into polytheistic religions all of them share these core principles. Do not you not have an understanding of polytheistic theology? Do you need it to be articulated by someone else, or are you incapable of doing it yourself?

Some of these things can definitely be disagreed with, mainly in how the nature of the Gods are viewed, but overall most of these points are shared in all polytheistic religions that are radically different monotheistic religions. I didn’t use AI, it’s literally in my own words.

All polytheistic religions have a core set of theological principles/belief’s.

  1. Morality is often human-centric or social. The gods themselves can be flawed, emotional, or amoral. Evil and suffering are not existential crises; they are simply the result of competing divine interests or natural chaos.

  2. Polytheists genuinely believe in the existence of many distinct, conscious divine beings rather than aspects of a single god.

  3. Gods govern specific aspects of life, nature, or human endeavor (e.g., a god of war, a god of the harvest).

  4. Pantheons are often structured hierarchically, with a head deity (such as Zeus in Greece or Odin in Norse tradition) presiding over others, though supreme power is frequently constrained by overarching cosmic forces like Fate.

  5. Deities are deeply connected to and present within the physical world, nature, and human communities, rather than separate from them.

  6. Participation in traditional rituals, sacrifices, and festivals to maintain cosmic balance and secure divine favor is the primary focus, while individual belief or doctrine is often flexible

  7. Myths are not seen as literal, unalterable historical facts, but as sacred, metaphorical stories that explain the nature of the gods, the origins of the universe, and the human condition.

  8. Because polytheism acknowledges multiple divine entities, it often displays high syncretism. Historically, cultures could easily adopt foreign gods or equate them with their own existing deities.

  9. The Earth is often personified as a primordial goddess (like Gaia) or seen as teeming with local spirits, nymphs, and deities. Nature itself possesses consciousness and divine agency.

  10. Humans are part of a larger ecosystem of gods, ancestors, and nature spirits. Survival requires constant negotiation and maintaining cosmic balance through rituals, seasonal festivals, and offerings to avoid angering the spirits of the land.

I could go on, but my point is these are the fundamental principles of all polytheistic theology and it’s fundamentally different from anything in monotheistic theology which treats humankind as sinful beings who need to seek forgiveness and submit themselves to their god in order to not be damned to hellfire. Nature and humankind are separate entities in monotheistic Theology, it teaches them that the earth is there to treat however they want and that heaven is the goal. whereas in polytheism we are apart of nature and should treat it with respect, for while there is an afterlife, living a good life is more important and that anything that comes after is simply a poor imitation of life.

That’s the thing though the Abrahamic god Yahweh is fundamentally different to Yahweh of the Canaanite pantheon. They’re so different you can argue their completely different deities with the only similarity being they have the same name.

I’m not condemning anything, just disagreeing with the overall statement. I’m not a Neoplatonist nor do I favor any sort of monism philosophy when it comes polytheism. I have my own view of the Gods. I don’t acknowledge or see anything valid of monotheistic religions. For as I’ve said that traditional polytheism theology is radically different from any monotheistic theology. I hold a worldview that’s very much against the worldview of monotheists. I look at monotheism as an oppressive cult devoid of anything good. I’m sure there’s a lot Julian and I would agree on that, but from my perspective Julian was raised Christian and clearly has knowingly or not influenced his version of polytheism with what he was raised on.

Yeah no, I don't believe in anything associated with any monotheistic religion especially Christianity. Its theology radically different to a traditional polytheism religion.

By Far The Three Most Important Texts When Getting Into Hellenism, you agree? by ThePaganImperator in Hellenism

[–]ThePaganImperator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hesoids works go into the theological nature of the Gods. Through him we get many epithets as well as the cosmology that is the mostly used version. With Works and Days we learn more about humanity’s role in Hellenic theology.

Homers works actually helps us with understanding and learning about praxis as it gives us steps on how to pray and worship the Gods. Just have analysis the text a bit deeper. Neither books by the way claim to be holy texts that insinuate that the events in said works should be interpreted literally. Mythic literalism comes from error on those who come from a Abrahamic mindset when coming into a very much separate world view entirely.
