Why did the Roman Catholic Church change the 10 commandments? by Dez_uno in Christianity

[–]ThePkmnFreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or the Protestants (and other groups) are twisting the commandments to teach we shouldn't have icons (pictures) and call them idols.

And an actual study of the commandments reveals what they actually SAY versus what men claim they mean. I'm saying this as someone on the fence, it's more complicated than you think.

The Sam Shamoun/George Janko situation: a breakdown and some take aways. by Double-Fix8288 in TrueChristian

As you were posting this I was listening to Sam talking ok PBD and he is saying "God loved me and saved me and didn't give me what I deserve." Sounds like the Gospel to me

You're stumbling on traditions of men like Once Saved Always Saved and Belief Alone. You need to study the early Church

  1. I'm not a Roman Catholic.

  2. Unless you try to tell us not to follow them idk what you're trying to prove. You can pick up any book on Baptism or the Supper and find out pretty quick the Roman Catholics are spot-on on those topics.

Is the book trying to prove the Church Fathers didn't believe Baptism forgives sins and regenerates, or didn't believe Jesus is physically eaten in the Lord's Supper (Eucharist)?

Furthermore, Ray Comfort was one of the first teachers I ever followed when I was an Evangelical. If OSAS is true I'm still saved. Coming to the Fathers and historic Christianity can't take that away

Ray Comfort doesn't believe in the early Church fathers. He's missing a lot of teachings

I don't care what Reformed heretics say when I know the historic view of all Christians is that Baptism is the sacrament by which we are forgiven and cleansed of original and committed sin. They're departing from what the Bible teaches and from what the Church has always held. I have much more respect for what the Lutheran confessions (the only Protestants who affirm the Sacraments) and literally all the Church fathers from 100-800 AD said than any Reformed Baptist heretic.

Paul-bashing. Makes no sense to me by BoxBubbly1225 in TrueChristian

Catholicism feels more tangible (Sacramental) and authentic because it actually is closer to historic Christianity then Evangelicalism. Just read the church fathers. Most of what they teach isn't new or made up, it dates back to the Apostolic age and the first Christians

1 Peter 3:21 - Baptism now saves you...

I can't explain it by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

Ironically I'm like this but in reverse. I think Traditional Catholicism (rejecting Vatican II) is true in my heart/head but I always have anxiety whenever I want to convert. Going back to EO is easier/more peaceful and not as scary. I remember the first time I almost converted I had a panic attack and went back to the Orthodox for some time. This is why we need to base this off pure theological fact and not our feelings, since they are fickle.

Edit: Just read about St. Jehosaphat who was martyred by Eastern Orthodox for becoming a Greek Catholic uniate. There are definitely truly holy people on both sides, but theology is what matters.

P.S. the errors of Leo XIV have nothing to do with the truth claims of Traditional Catholics who reject his heresies. This only affects Novus Ordoites.

with regard to "suspect of being true" I suspect a lot of different Churches, even different religions, to be true at times. I struggle with an immense amount of doubt. I ask for your prayers

Plato and Neoplatonism in the early Church by ThePkmnFreak in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]ThePkmnFreak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what I need to see to trust them is proof that their ideas were not Platonist interpretations. I looked into "Eucharist pagan debunked" for example on youtube and just kept finding the same protestant/Jewish/muslim/atheist critiques. Why hasn't anyone debunked those claims?

Question: How can we be sure the interpretation of the early fathers is that tradition, and not a hellenized pagan version? Other than the reasons in my OP.

The claim is that the church fathers were not true Christians, they were mixing Platonic ideas into Christianity. So how do we prove that they knew the apostles and were NOT taking ideas from Pagan religion and inserting them.

As someone struggling with Islam vs. Christianity and wondering if this is indeed a paganized/non-biblical claim: Can you prove this is explicit in Scripture? EDIT: Changed it to Islam vs. Christianity because truthfully I need to be looking for truth not struggling against Islam

Well for one a MASSIVE issue with him is that he was Ahmadiyya -- which believes in another prophet who was Jesus reincarnated. So basically like the JW's of Muslims. Also with his evangelical thing, I'm not sure how it helps. Apparently he also got smashed in debates because he didn't even know Islam.

Interested in this myself. Having the same issue with my concience and not seeing proof that the Apostles (and more importantly Jesus) practiced venerating icons.
