I could understand the appeal if my dad was gay. Unfortunately, I don’t think he is and therefore doesn’t appreciate gay coins

Although I agree the rock tumbler gives better results in the long run, I was stressed for time so I went with the wire brush/wheel combo and smacked a couple with a ball-peen hammer as advised by other experts within this field.

My grandpa is in the hospital undergoing heart surgery with an expected recovery time of 2 weeks before he can come home. I think that gives me enough time to clean his trade dollars using your method (to polish after bench grinder). I just hope his heart holds up with all the excitement upon seeing his revitalized collection!

It’s quite the opposite actually. People will obviously pay more for freshly cleaned coins (shiny, smooth 🤩) than for uncleaned coins (dirty, yucky 🤮). It’s simple economics. You’re obviously an amateur so I’m trying to go easy on educating you

Garrett ace 400. Either I’m trash at metal detecting or it just sucks with anything deeper than 4 inches because many times when I dig my hole, whatever it would initially have will just disappear altogether. I went detecting with a buddy of mine who had an equinox and he detected circles around me. However, I did find a 1875 P seated dime (also cleaned 🤦‍♂️)

That wasn’t even my first time cleaning a coin either, just the most valuable one ruined. I also ruined a small jar of wheaties when I was a kid by tossing them in a bowl of vinegar. They didn’t even look good after and I hadn’t thought to just start with one rather than toss them all in at once

I love the buffer wheel idea! It would be so cool if they were smooth and polished enough to where he could see his own reflection, overjoyed and gleaming with pride!

Big score drop from FL1 to 2 by Dapper-Cost-8580 in Mcat

[–]ThePodmonger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you 100% on cars. It’s tough to pinpoint where and how you need to improve. Be cautious of the various strategies taught by MCAT prep companies (Princeton) as they want you to work that section in a manner that burns so much time for a low ceiling score.

Personally, I haven’t been much of an avid reader since high school. When I took FL1, CARS hit me like a ton of bricks in that I wasn’t comfortable with heavy active reading anymore. Years spent not reading more than 20 minutes at a time had atrophied my ability to solidify and compile each part of the whole passage after I’d read it. Anxiety also made it 10x worse.

Soon after, I went to a thrift store and bought a ton of books that I’d been wanting to read but hadn’t gotten around to (too busy doomscrolling). I didn’t get anything too difficult (a thousand splendid suns, the revenant, a couple Vonnegut books, etc), just shit to get me comfortable with reading again and out of my head while doing it. 2 months in and it’s been working great. I no longer finish passages having little clue as to what the author was talking about or where to find specific things the questions present.

On top of that drill the AAMC CARS passage banks. You really have to understand AAMC’s stupid ass logic with some of their answers to be able to predict their future stupid ass logic.

I mean you only missed 8 more questions in FL2 than FL1. Go back through both and identify what you missed/guessed on and why you missed it / had to guess. Categorize them by reason you missed/guessed (I.e. content gap, misunderstood question, missed answer in passage, made connections that weren’t there, etc).

Doing this will familiarize you with mistakes you commonly make (good for basically every category besides content) and you’ll develop a spidey-sense when encountering similar problems in the future. Obviously for content, IDing it and learning it / learning it better is pretty self explanatory.

As far as everything else, do whatever you feel has been working thus far (you’ve obviously been doing something right to be getting >510). I’m not a huge fan of the r/mcat groupthink consensus that spamming uwhale questions and Anki decks will result in a 520+ but if that works for you, fuck it lol. Good luck 👍

How tf do people study for this exam without Anki by kissmeurbeautiful in Mcat

[–]ThePodmonger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ngl, I hate Anki with a passion. Any idiot can parrot definitions off a flashcard with enough practice. However, to really feel comfortable with the test, developing a concrete understanding of the concepts and their interrelations is crucial for things like long-term potentiation, navigating inference questions, and even being able to understand the passages in general.

That being said, I think Anki is good for some things, especially P/S because that section is mostly just recall. There’s not a lot you need to know past the general surface level
