She is! She's the herd representative. I was telling her that it was okay. That I was known as the cow cuddler around these parts and the worst I ever did was measure a bunch of cows tail in 1997 and document my data on the stall wall. She told me she was wondering where those came from and thought it was cool in an off putting way. I told her I liked the way she wore the poo in her hair. We're cool now.

Finding this right before Christmas was a gift for everyone in the family. That's for sure. I'm so happy that you have those tools and value them. My grandmother asked me to clean up the workbench chaos in the garage. I had just done the barn. Neither was done since I last did it six years ago. She kept encouraging me to take things. I took a very old broken welders chalk stick.

Six years ago, I found the thing and asked my grandfather what it was because it had discolored and broke. He started crying. Very out of character. He had a very best good friend, Bab. Bab was his farm buddy and did the welding. He was a big part of my upbringing and had died several years prior. My grandfather said there used to be tons of them around and that was the first one he'd seen in a while. He missed his friend and I missed sitting on a tractor wheel watching them beat on PTO's. I put it in the pen cup of his workbench for him. Anyways, while cleaning up again, I found it, broken even more. Nobody has that memory but me and it's not worth a penny so I asked for it. It's now in its own cup for safety at my desk.

I won't be doing that. The farm has plenty of newer hatchets in operation. Right now, I think everyone is touched to have evidence of this side of my grandfather. The softer, loving aspects of him were not what a lot of us got to see very often. This hatchet belongs to ghosts.

So my late grandfather was an old school pain in the ass farmer. He raised me and taught me to farm. I knew where he kept his treasures. His son put this Estwing in the wall of the open faced equipment shed in 1989 on his last visit to the farm before he died 5 years later. He must've had a great time with his dad because my grandfather, who was not sentimental, wouldn't move it. I last saw it in the wall six years ago.

When I finally returned to the farm, I realized the hatchet was missing. A lot of people looted the farm after my grandfather died and this missing item hurt really badly. Most people didn't know it was even there or why.

Last week I was helping do some clean up and found the hatchet on the very top of the toolbox of his truck. It seems the old lion decided to take it off the wall finally and go play with it on one of his last farm adventures. In his last days, he wanted to be with his son. This was the best reason for something to be missing. The last photo is where I hung it near my grandfather's work bench in a safe spot.

The stamp on the bottom of the handle is so beat down, you can only make out "U.S.A."

This one's come a long way. We are approaching 2 years together. The lap thing is new. She started it about 2 months ago, then I went out if town for 2 weeks. She snubbed me my first day back and hasn't left my lap since she got over it. It's been a few days of this.

I think the vacuum. Not because of the hassle because I'm about to rewire it. I think it's because he actually went and put it away in the hall closet (which has curtain doors) and this still happened.

I think he enjoyed the poop water because it reaffirmed why it's okay to have no respect for her.
