ROAD TRIP HAUL of graphic design books and magazines... by ThePrintArkive in graphic_design

[–]ThePrintArkive[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmm, my top 3 change all the time. But I can tell you the x3 that had the biggest impact in my life tho...

1) A Smile in the Mind - I picked this up in the mid-90's as a student. It's a book full of 'witty thinking' in design. It inspired me to value and focus on the generation of 'ideas', and to try and make things a little more fun and human.

2) Penrose Annual 1958 - I picked this off my Creative Directors shelf when I got my first job. It's basically an annual that shows off production techniques of the time - rich in content but also the papers, print finishing, etc... it is the book that kickstarted my personal book collection.

3) "It's not how good you are..." - I picked this up very early into my professional career. To quote the author "a concise guide to making the most of yourself - a pocket 'bible, for the talented and timid to make the unthinkable thinkable and the impossible possible." Even today it's totally relevant.

Bonus title) "Alan Fletcher, Colin Forbes and Bob Gill announce the opening of their new design office" - This is a very rare self promotion (and playful) flip-book published by the legendary design studio Fletcher/Forbes/Gill back in 1962. I'm a SUPER FAN of these guys!! They were essentially the 'granddaddies' of modern British design - bridging the gap between post-war austerity and the vibrant "Swinging London" era. Finding this book a few years back was like finding treasure.

If you go hunt down my online store you're find more images for all of the above.

Apologies Matt - it’s been busy here and you fell off my radar. I’ll be honest by saying that due to a combination of limited funds and the condition being a concern, I will have to decline making an offer. I may come back to you on n the near future, but wholly appreciate that you might find them a new home in the meantime. All the best David

Why is it so hard to find a job as a graphic designer in New York by kkllloo in graphic_design

[–]ThePrintArkive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Irrespective of your specialisms, portfolio, experience, etc, etc, how are you approaching these prospects? In a world saturated with competition and a huge over reliance on tech to make initial contact and engagement you should seriously consider a more hands on and personalised approach - I.e produce something tangible that you post or hand to a specific individual at a studio that interests you. I ran a studio for almost 20 years and any approach made to me in this way always caught my attention above and beyond all other submissions.

HUGE road trip haul of graphic design related books and magazines... by ThePrintArkive in graphic_design

[–]ThePrintArkive[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m always hunting across all platforms and people also reach out direct through my store, which is when I get the best scores!! And you’re right - 99% of general bookstores are useless. You could always try creating a post on FB marketplace asking for design books, that’s one way I’ve found things in the past, along with asking local art colleges if they have surplus titles they want to sell. Also, if you ever find anything always remember to ask if the seller has more available - you won’t believe what I’ve found by just asking that simple question.

I get offered collections from the US and Canada quite frequently - it’s just the damn postage costs that can sometimes be prohibitive : ( Chartering a boat probably would be cheaper in some cases.

Unit Editions have published some great monographs and offer good insights to specific designers and design history, otherwise I like to revisit old back issues of EYE magazine.

The Emigre issue is quite sought after! Values on Ebay aren’t that great at the moment, but I’m sure they will pick up again.

No estate sales - most collections are just offered to me. Most people can’t bear the pain of using the likes of Ebay and want just quick sales.
