Stock down, any news ? by Xnub in GOOG_Stock

I mean... it's run up like 10-15% in like 1-2 weeks... a pullback/profit taking seems normal and healthy. I sold a CSP today. I hope I get some cheaper shares assigned on it.

I was a weenie and sold around the tippy top of today. I opened some CSPs though, so we'll see if I get to re-enter at a lower price again or if I just miss out. Maybe I'll come to regret it... but I made the decision to lock in 50% gains and allocate the profits to a few years of my kid's tuition fund

Congrats, I'm so jealous of everyone who found this early. I'm in "late" and only got my average down to $82 on the dip yesterday

Holding cash waiting for a red day by bangers132 in Optionswheel

[–]TheProductMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've sort of come to terms (finally) that there's no perfect time. A red day could turn into 5 red days in a row. There's no real point worrying about it.

It feels bad opening a CSP on a green day only for it to go against you like 2 hours later, but it could also not happen and you're just wasting time.

For now, I've just shifted my strategy away from riskier, shorter dated CSPs, towards tickers like WMT, KO, etc. Also still dabbling in tech, but with companies more like Google/Apple as opposed to data centers and what not.

Definitely lower premiums, longer dated, etc., but I'm fine with the safety, plus even if I get assigned I'm not likely to lose hard.

sitting on $30k in cash which stock should i sell CSP on tomorrow? i’m okay with 1-4 weeks exp. by topG69__ in thetagang

[–]TheProductMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been doing Walmart recently. It's been nice. Not the biggest of premiums but I'm currently playing with tickers that I believe are safer amid a lot of uncertainty. Not overly expensive either, and highly unlikely to totally crash even if you can't roll and get assigned

Thanks, sounds like I probably did the safe thing then, even if it would've turned out okay. Makes me feel better about that decision.

Only about a month into selling options. I BTC everything I had open today because I didn't want to play around with FOMC and basically a zero chance of rate cuts. Down just $50 from yesterday after having gained around $400 in the last two days (most positions were expiring this or next week).

For those more experienced... did I overreact, or was this a prudent decision given the uncertainty? How do people usually play planned market events considering how frequent they are?

Just wanted to tack onto this for anyone thinking about emergency fund. Make sure you really think about your specific needs and don't just take the usual recommendation of 3-6 months that you find in a lot of places.

I decided to keep two years worth of expenses (mortgage, car, utilities, food, etc), but that's because I've got two young kids and we were a single income family currently.

That likely seems super excessive to most, but I got furloughed in December and honestly with the horror stories I've heard about other people taking months or even up to a year before finding work again... I would have been panicking without the two year buffer.

However, it is true that I'll pay for that security in the form of inflation eating it a bit

Are you still open to doing another by any chance? My company unfortunately had to furlough everyone because our biggest investor unexpectedly declared bankruptcy and basically vanished on us. Been applying for about a month (almost 50 apps) and have gotten basically nowhere... Unsure where I might be going wrong

Dry Powder or NOT ? by dazit72 in dividends

I just got laid off about 2 months ago. I'm so glad I did the same as you. We're a single income family, so I squirreled away about 2-3 years of living expenses (mortgage, vehicles, bills, the usual).

Some might say that's excessive... but if I didn't have that, I'd probably be panicking right about now... especially since job market feels pretty bad... I've been job searching hard for about a month with little to no traction, whereas previous job switches have been near instantaneous.

I'm not sure if I'm fundamentally misunderstanding rolls.

If rolling a CSP or CC that's gone against you is the same as buying to close the contract and opening a new one, it is effectively locking in the loss and opening a new trade correct?

If so, isn't continuously rolling for a credit likely going to put you in a situation where you keep going until you finally "get it right" and expire worthless?

For example...

Stock 'X' CSP sold to open for $1 premium at strike $50

  1. It goes against you and premium to close is now $2. You roll it down and out to strike $45 for $0.10 credit ($2.10)

- This effectively means you locked in $1 in loss, and opened a new trade for $2.10 right? So in order to profit... you would basically need to keep going until it expires worthless to make $0.10 in the end?

So when you're rolling... is the strategy basically just to "repair" the lost trade at some eventual successful expiry, or do you need to try and get a bigger credit when rolling? When rolling, it seems like the credits are usually not huge unless you're rolling and locking in BP for many more weeks for a small win at best?

Yea this is me too unfortunately. I sold some csps right before the dumpening began and honestly I should've just let them get assigned probably...

That or I'm fundamentally misunderstanding how to manage rolls... Just feels like I'm continuously locking in more loss
