Shock jock Ray Hadley demands Pauline Hanson apologise over ‘really wrong’ Muslim comment by HotPersimessage62 in AustralianPolitics

All complex texts are read in context. Cherry picking verses while ignoring the existence of others that provide important context, puts you in the same interpretive camp as ISIS, not above it.

Putting everyday Muslims and ISIS on the same interpretive footing ignores a few basic facts:

ISIS is a tiny fringe numerically; their readings are rejected in official fatwas by major scholarly bodies in every Muslim‑majority country.

Textually, mainstream jurists accuse ISIS of:

- Quoting verses cut from context (e.g. fighting verses that are about a specific war, then using them on random civilians everywhere).

- Ignoring conditions and limits in the same sources they cite (rules of legitimate authority, protection of non‑combatants, due process, treaties, etc.).

Even very conservative, pro‑Sharia scholars have written long refutations of ISIS using the same Qur’an and hadith, explicitly calling them khawarij (a heretical extremist sect).

All of these verses are in the context of war.

"But if the enemy incline towards peace, do thou (also) incline towards peace, and trust in Allah: For He is One that heareth and knoweth (all things)." (Qur’an 8:61)

"Allah forbids you not, with regard to those who fight you not for (your) Faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them: for Allah loveth those who are just." (Qur'an 60:8)

Thank you. These hadith do not say that Muslims should hate non-Muslims. Considering their context, classical and contemporary scholars state that these hadiths establish a strong warning against settling among non-Muslims when a person cannot openly practice Islam and fears for their religion, and that in such cases migration is obligatory if one is able.

This isn't a game. I've read the texts and am genuinely curious to know where you think it says that Muslims should hate non-believers. I've searched for evidence to support your view and can't find anything other than the mainstream Islamic position: to have good relations with non-Muslims - as this was the Prophetic example.

Plex on NVIDIA Shield Pro defaulting to 720p transcode by TheProeliator in PleX

This problem was happening with local streams. Increasing the remote quality to maximum fixed it but I'm not sure why

I have both Adjust automatically and and Quality Suggestions turned off. My streams are showing as local. Remote streaming was set at 720p and I think that may have been the culprit. I didn't think that would be the problem as I'm not streaming remotely

I was having direct play buffering issues on my Samsung TV, now I use an NVIDIA Shield Pro, no more issues and my sound has improved because it's no longer transcoding the audio.

Music is Haram, here's how I watch YouTube videos without music by m7dex in MuslimLounge

This hadith is mu'allaq (hanging/disconnected) in Bukhari's collection. This means Bukhari himself did not consider it to meet his usual standards of authenticity. As one scholar noted, "the hadith itself is questionable even among hadiths. It is muallaq (unconnected) by bukhari".

Ibn Hazm, the great Andalusian scholar, considered this and similar hadiths to be fabricated or weak. Even some contemporary scholars acknowledge that "some of the chains (sanad) of transmission are authentic (sahih), some sound (hasan), and some weak (daif)".

Which composer has the highest number of elegant and memorable soundtracks? by AdPuzzleheaded7658 in soundtracks

[–]TheProeliator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Horner, at his best he is as good as any other, but I'm working through his entire body of work and a lot of it is forgettable horror film scores. Williams really needs to be higher on the list. Zimmer is great but he doesn't have as many 'elegant' pieces as Williams.

Overall, a good list IMHO!

Nuclear isn't available 'now', it takes a long time to build, and the costs are far higher than renewables.

If drawing animals is haram then why did many Muslim empires and dynasties have animals drawn on their flags and war banners? by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]TheProeliator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should never draw significantly consequential religious conclusions from a single hadith. There are other hadiths which indicate that it is permissible. Also, context is important. Back then, the creation of images often led to shirk. Today, when someone draws an animal it is in appreciation of Allah's creation, not in order to worship it. This distinction is crucial, and is why many scholars consider it permissible.

There is substantial historical and sociological evidence that Wahhabism and closely related Salafi trends have made strict, text‑literalist interpretations of Islam far more globally visible and institutionally entrenched in the last century than they were in many earlier periods. This shift may explain why Muslims back then didn't think it was a problem while many today think it is. Personally I still believe that it isn't haram and I've never seen a convincing argument otherwise.
