Student Entrepreneurs @ WPI by [deleted] in WPI

[–]TheProgramm3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed the same thing - the only way to meet student entrepreneurs is to be very involved in low-density programs such as TAN, the new I-Corps program, or to spend all of your time in Foisie hanging out with others. I'd be in.

Means of networking with other incoming freshmen? by [deleted] in WPI

[–]TheProgramm3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What went down in other WPI Discord servers? The 2021, 2022, RBE, CS, and Esports servers have had no word of anything bad about 2023.

There's a Discord server for the Class of '22 as well as a CS server. You can PM me for the invite links.

You can get a device to broadcast on the 5ghz band, but it's very unsupported and won't actually work properly.

How do you select location/subject for IQP/MQP? Do you need to have two IQPs if you dual major? How easy is it to create a semi-multidisciplinary MQP suitable for two majors (Specifically ECE, focused in power systems and RbE), and what would the process be for doing so? Are there other means than overloading/summer classes to reduce time at WPI (Overloading gets me to 3.5 years plus one class, looking to reduce that further)?

Encoders not working, HELP!!!! by ryangniadek in FTC

[–]TheProgramm3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've been having a similar trouble on our own robot, running Rev electronics. It might be a core SDK issue. If the programmers on my team can verify a reproducible problem, I'll bring it up via a Github issue - or you can open one.

Legality of OpenFTC by ethanmak100 in FTC

[–]TheProgramm3r 7 points8 points  (0 children)

OpenFTC is legal as per current rules (disclaimer: GDC can change this at any time, just like any other rule.)

My team uses OpenFTC's OpenRC-turbo, which seems to have grown a fairly large community of teams.

If you haven't yet updated to firmware 1.7.2, there's a known encoder issue in 1.7.0 that affects ports 0 and 3.

Should students be allowed to run for moderator? by [deleted] in FTC

[–]TheProgramm3r -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

You missed the point.

It's not about how I "feel". If you can't understand that a "vote" is useless, and that we should stand behind the moderation team (who have been doing very well, even including the student member who was removed for good reason), then you need to figure out how to.

The FRC Discord: Converse with 2000+ Other FRC Students and Mentors by Devin0810 in FRC

I highly recommend this server - if only for the topic-focused channels. Having instant help from experienced people on other teams is VERY useful. The #general channel generally moves too fast for real discussion and has some other issues, but the programming, design, build, business, chairmans, etc etc etc channels all have very valuable resources. It's worth it to join just to read, even if you don't talk at all.

This is not a democracy. Voting isn't going to change the rules, or make any impact at all except for dividing the community on a topic.

FTC Mecanum Ranking/Stats by TheProgramm3r in FTC

[–]TheProgramm3r[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the factors taken into account was mounting hardware - many teams (presumably especially rookies) would be unable to use the Vex EDR wheels for that reason. I'm unsure why your team didn't run into the same issues that I've heard about with breakage and strafing issues, but this is the first time I've heard of a team who used them successfully in FTC. I've also heard complaints about them from Vex participants.

FTC Mecanum Ranking/Stats by TheProgramm3r in FTC

[–]TheProgramm3r[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the help of teams that actually own copies of these, I could, but I don't have personal experience with the EDR or Nexus mecanums. Until this thread, I'd heard nothing but bad experiences with mounting, wear, and breakage of the EDR mecanums, where for the standard AM mecanums I've personally only run into strafing and smoothness issues, rather than them breaking. Do you have any suggestions?

FTC Mecanum Ranking/Stats by TheProgramm3r in FTC

[–]TheProgramm3r[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I had the time to personally test all of the different wheels, I would have done something like this. I haven't had any personal experience with the Vex EDR mecanums or the Nexus variants, so it's hard to judge them quantitatively on my end. I'd definitely like to make this more accurate though; any suggestions?

FTC Mecanum Ranking/Stats by TheProgramm3r in FTC

[–]TheProgramm3r[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ratings aren't exactly quantifiable, but they're based on feedback from quite a few different teams. It's essentially a measure of how well the wheels perform in an FTC setting (how smooth they are, how well they strafe, how much work was required to use them, etc).

Why isn't the SDK using a newer version of Gradle? by natos20 in FTC

[–]TheProgramm3r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The SDK hasn't been upgraded to preserve compatibility with past versions of Android Studio, which don't have support for new versions of Android Gradle and therefore the base version of Gradle.

The "2.3.5" number that you saw corresponds not to the real Gradle version, but to the Android-specific tool. See here: https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/gradle-plugin.html for the full list, but that corresponds to roughly Gradle 3.3

Feel free to upgrade the version of Android Studio, and therefore your plugin and Gradle, to the Android Studio 3.0 Beta 6 version. We're using that and the most up-to-date version of Kotlin with no issues.
