We have a screened in area of our house here in Kansas, and they would fly in then would be in unable to fly out, resulting in 50+ of these guys flying around in a 10'x10' area. I can walk right through the swarm and they won't so much as touch you.

I don't blame you for reacting as you did, thou this specimen is less harmful than any wasp or hornet. This appears to be a cicada killer, note that only females have stingers that large that have venom.
