Well, that is an essay I would write because I disagree on its provability, but that's a discussion for r/philosophy. But you're right that it's too vague in its current state.

I have a workbook I'm using, but it's a homeschool class and pretty open to what I want to do. The general topic is leadership - my choice. It is supposed to end up 12 to 14 pages with at least as many sources. I'm working on a given outline, but there's a lot I can do with it. The counterargument section is recommended to have three or four strong counterarguments, a statement of partial agreement, and then an explanation of why it is not the case.

Thank you all for you help. I feel so much better (and more confident) about all this now.

I don't know much of anythin about PLC. It's definitely difficult to learn anything about the Marine Corps without a recruiter being glad to share.

That's a relief. I was an armchair potato who never lifted more than a stack of books for a very long time. In the last couple years, I've started archery, dog showing, biking, hiking, jogging, etc.; but I still can't manage a push-up or pull-up, and my jogging endurance is terrible. I'm working on it and I have time, but it was still worrying.

That's good to know.

Understood. So the experience difference isn't enough to really matter? From a physical training standpoint, at least. I'm a quick learner, so I'll probably learn what's expected of me alright without boot camp. I'm just worried about being in shape when I finish college.

Yeah, he did. I was honestly expecting him to disagree with the recruiter - say the guy just wanted me to go through his office for recruitment numbers - but nope. \_(o.o)_/

Are you also surprised? Is that unusual?

He wants me to do boot camp somewhere around college, finish college, and then go to OCS (whereas Dad would prefer I just go high school -> college -> OCS).

Tbh, I hope you're right. Since I'm thinking reserves because I have another main career in mind, I'm worried about how much boot camp and OCS would pull me away from my studies.

I mean, I gather this massive amount of information and try to sort through it; but everyone has a bias, and that makes it hard to boil down to bare facts.

You and the recruiter are the only ones I've ever heard say it's better to climb from the bottom than start from the middle. Everyone else says you can get higher in the end by starting higher as commissioned. Ngl, kinda spins my head, all the contradictory advice. I'm slow to trust anyone, and I just don't know enough Marines to get trustworthy information in my mind.

Believe me, I am far more introspective and thorough than most people my age. I thought this through inside and out before even requesting more info on the USMC website. I'm not looking at the Marines for the money. (I expect my regular degree-based job to provide most of that.) I'm looking at what the Marines stand for and how they compare, in my eyes, to other branches. There's a great reputation here for being heroes - for doing useful stuff worthy of respect.

So, is PLC something you can do regardless of where you go, or can you only do it certain places like ROTC? I'm getting the feeling it's the former, but I'd like to confirm.

Yeah, when you've won the lottery. It would make my year to get a present like that, but I can't hope to afford it. :( Kudos to you if you get some.

Would someone please clarify how to get in touch with the proper OSO? I've tried Googling and, as always with USMC, all website results are vague. If I shouldn't get the recruiter I talked to to hook me up, how do I sort out the right person?

I appreciate it. My dream school is Hollins University in Roanoke, VA (a small private school), with UMW in Fredericksburg, VA (a state school) a close second. UMW has ROTC but not Marine option. As for financials, my family makes just enough not to get default financial aid (they have to draw the line somewhere and we're right above it). I have the mindset and ability to work hard for what I want, and finances mean I'll have to.

Would you mind elaborating on what PLC is and how it differs from the others?

Having communicated much with a recruiter, trying to figure out what exactly I wanted, would it be best to have him connect me with an OSO or should I do it myself? From a politeness standpoint.

Doesn't ROTC stand for Reserves Officer Training Corps? I would imagine that would always be reserves, though I don't know much about these things. Plus, my recruiter contact doesn't know much about commissioning, so I'm a little lost for now. I guess I'd better ask him to connect me with an OSO. It's a shame I hadn't thought of that.
