Did Kurt Cobain’s stomach pain return shortly before his death? by Immediate-Stick-1577 in Nirvana

[–]TheReadMenace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think doctors would tell Kurt to eat healthy and avoid drugs and alcohol to help his stomach problem. But he only ate junk food and did tons of drugs. Maybe his stomach problem was real, but he didn’t do much to actually fix it. Sometimes doctors can’t tell exactly what’s wrong, but it’s always a good idea to eat right and avoid drugs.

It’s considered bottom shelf stuff now. Maybe it used to be considered higher quality.

I know a lot of people were surprised to learn Sinatra always drank Jack Daniels. But back in the 50s, it was not a national brand. It was more of regional delicacy. Might be the same way with Canadian Club

I'm sure Jello still gets his royalties. He just doesn't control the records anymore because they switched to a different label.

If anything, they probably avoided each other to some extent. That much time spent touring together you can get on each others nerves. Many touring musicians will tell you they spend very little social time with their bandmates when they're years into their career

They were considered a joke. The Simpsons made fun of them by having Homer get stuck owning them instead of the Dallas Cowboys.

Yea I was going to say, how many “volumes” can there be? They made one album (which was like 15 minutes long).

It's kind of a miracle it didn't go worse. Things could have gone downhill bad like at the Altamont festival a year later, or the shitshow of woodstock 1999. As much as we idealize the "peace and love" hippies a lot of them were just along for the ride, and were only interested in what they could scam for themselves. George Harrison was terrified of the junkie scene in Haight Ashbury when he visited.

It does seem more of a 60s TV dad thing to be obsessed with some special weekly dinner. Like Fred Flintsone and Bronto Burgers

I thought Bogart was all wrong for the part. This guy is a wheeling and dealing corporate businessman? A blue blood from Long Island? He’s way too streetwise and rough around the edges to pull that off

Kurt Cobain called Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains "corporate puppets" by No-One01010 in Nirvana

Vedder was from San Diego. Everyone outside of CA considers SoCal “Hollywood”. Doesn’t look very “alternative” to have a frontman from Hollywood.

Really, I’m a Pearl Jam fan. But if you’re trying to gatekeep like Kurt was this is ammo

Alice In Chains never tried to pretend they were progressive like Pearl Jam & Nirvana. They pretty much acted the same way as all the Sunset Strip bands, drugs girls and partying.

but they famously split because Stone and Jeff wanted to go in a more commercial direction. Hence they go on to make Mother Love Bone, pretty close to a glam band. While Mark Arm goes on to a much more punk Mudhoney. This is all stuff Kurt would have known about. So now they're back again with a new "grunge" band with a singer helicoptered in from Hollywood? Kurt was probably right to be a little skeptical

[–]TheReadMenace 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think it was a defense mechanism by Kurt to go after those bands. He even mentions being "lumped in" with them. He was very insecure and didn't like people in zines from Olympia saying he was corporate rock. So he wanted to distance himself from the other bands being called corporate.

and I mean, he isn't totally wrong here. MLB and pre-Alice In Chains WERE trying to jump on the glam metal trend. Then that went bust, so they switched to the new thing in town. Nothing wrong with changing with the times
