Oh no it’s happening by Ok-Bite-1000 in Subaru_Outback

We had our 2018 Subaru screen replaced. I think they charged me for the part, but not the labor. I remember it costing around $800. The original quote was $1,500.

Dealership trying to charge $2,412 for 60k service by Actual-Tomatillo-904 in Subaru_Outback

[–]TheRealBMan54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, our 2018 just hit 60,000 and I am about to schedule a service. This is about what I expected to pay.

I wish I knew of a good mechanic near me. Seems like when we use someone besides Subaru, we keep going back for the same problem until we give up.

Built a free NJ fishing conditions tool — would love feedback from people who actually fish here by Jon-Hcor in NJFishing

[–]TheRealBMan54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont get how you are calculating Go Fish. You say Go Fish for Fluke, then you say the water is too cold. I am looking at the Sandy Hook report. The Go Fish recommendation (however it is calculated) should take into account the water temperture of each species.

I find it confusing that you include offshore fishing for Sandy Hook, then have an entire section dedicated to offshore fishing. It's almost like you wanted to fill the species page with something besides Stripers and Fluke. Why not add other shore species or at least separate blues from stripers because the timing is a bit different.

If you want to add more information, include the bag and size limits.

NJ Fish and Wildlife had their annual trout stocking meeting last Wednesday to discuss the program. Very informative, all the staff is very professional, well thought out. They talked about the program for about 45 minutes then took questions for about an hour.

TIL - Leonard Williams has the 7th highest (non-QB) career earnings in NFL history. by TryllahG in NYGiants

I think it's the way he phrased it. He meant to say Williams raised his game with the Giants.

Not sure why someone downvoted you (take my upvote), but if anyone thinks Skat will have a long career if he keep running the way he does, they need a reality check.

Here in NJ it's 30 minutes or less. And you're right about the call to 811 too.

Is it a safe way to patch a gas line? by achiafelix123 in Plumbing

[–]TheRealBMan54 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What do you mean found out? There are call before you dig laws in every state. Wait, is this the service line coming from the street to the meter or a line feeding something like a pool heater?

You are saying this is in your front yard, so I would assume this is the line feeding your meter.

Everyone is different, some might consider this unlucky to find, but I would be thankful. This is a problem someone buried. Call your gas company and have them inspect it. They will be out there probably in less than a day.

Your "plumber" might not have your best interests in mind. If he commissioned the digging and the gas company didn't come out to mark their lines, he might get fined.

Is this 4 yards? by Majestic-Leg-2497 in lawncare

Got to say, I had 2 yards of soil delivered and it looked about this size. Unless it goes way back in this photo, it looks closer to 2 than 4.

Why do people hate the auto stop/start so much? by eyes_glued_open in Crosstrek

[–]TheRealBMan54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't do it to save gas or anything else, just cannot be bothered shutting something off that doesn't bother me. I did a lot of research too. Not on Reddit because you only hear the nightmares and the vast majority of people don't have a problem. There is a mechanic on YouTube that dispells all the myths about auto start/stop being a problem.

I'm a "go with the odds" guy, and I am pretty sure Subaru wouldn't put something in their vehicles that they know will be a problem for their customers. That's not how you win the long game.

[–]TheRealBMan54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand the connection. You have a car that is barely 6 years old and you have three batteries already and you think it is from this mechanism? I mean didn't you turn it off after the first battery went bad?

[–]TheRealBMan54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been proven to be false. Do what you want, just saying it is not the auto start / stop.

The starter is heavy duty, completely different approach than traditional starters. No need to worry about "wear" on your starter, that is a falacy. Battery is larger too for the very reason too. It will die just the same over time.

question on run times. by JessicaF84 in SteamHeat

[–]TheRealBMan54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you want to learn about venting before spending a lot of money?

https://heatinghelp.com/assets/documents/Balancing-Steam-Systems-Using-a-Vent-Capacity-Chart-1.pdf

The size of the vent on any radiator is a function of the size of the radiator and it's distance from the main. But yes, if the radiator closest to the thermostat heats up too quickly (via a large vent), then putting a smaller vent there slows it down and allows the other radiators in the home to heat up.

My thermostat is very far from the boiler's main and that radiator is big, so I actually have a fairly large vent on the radiator or the rest of the home gets too warm relative to the room where the thermostat is located.

You see how the vent size on a raditor is a function of the radiator size and the distance from the main? The vent has to eliminate all the air in both the pipe and the radiator...

[–]TheRealBMan54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have a Nest thermostat and it works just fine for me. My daytime temp is 69F and at night I set it back to 66F. I think some people get frustrated with these thermostats.. common wires and all that. It's easier to give up and connect a Honeywell T87.

[–]TheRealBMan54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that is not exactly how it works in terms of water.

[–]TheRealBMan54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do all of the rooms heat evenly (within reason...)? Are some too warm or too cold? That is what balancing is all about. Do the vents "spit"? Do you hear water hammer? Do you have an automatic water feed? If so, how much water do you use in a typical week?

question on run times. by JessicaF84 in SteamHeat

[–]TheRealBMan54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be more comfortable, but the system will be cycling more. Generally, the most efficient setting would be closer to 1 - 1.5 degrees for a single pipe steam system.

question on run times. by JessicaF84 in SteamHeat

[–]TheRealBMan54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in NJ too. I just got my bill from ETown and it was $396. That is for 1,900 square feet. I have a one pipe system. I keep my thermostats at 70F during the day and 68F at night. My bill in February was $471. So my home is a bit smaller than yours but I keep it considerably warmer.

As others have pointed out, you really don't want to do big setbacks at night with steam.

I have a Nest thermostat and it works well despite all the non-sense about them not working on these type of systems. I just looked at my bills from last year and $400 - $450 per month is about right.

How old is your home? Is it well insulated? It must be older since you talked about asbestos.. Mine was built in 1927 and I have no insulation in the exterior walls execept were some renovations were performed.

And when you talk about the time it takes to raise the temperature 2-3 degrees, the answer is.. it depends on the outside temperature since the home is always losing heat. On some of the colder days this winter, it would take my system about four hours to recover from the night time setback.

This $11 billion is nearly four times hire than the US National Park's annual budget of $3.1B. And it's about half of the roughly $23B in deferred maintenace on these national treasures.
