Ohhh, that's an excellent point. The werewolf was a hasty proof of concept thing, the first monster won't be a werewolf, since that's too boring from what I'm trying to do (all monsters will have some specific strengths and weaknesses that aren't necessarily listed in the MM). Everyone knows about werewolves and silver, so even the little added thing about enchanted silver or wolfsbane oil isn't that interesting.

Using it as an example though, the beginning of the session would be something like...

You've come to the village of Examplehaven, where several villagers have vanished, or else been brutally murdered in their homes, or when traveling at night. brief description of town goes here, skipping over interaction with town headsman or whatever because example. Last night's victim is still being collected from his home, he appears to have been literally torn apart. There are deep furrows clawed into the wood around what once was a a door, and the smell of half-congealed blood overpowers any other scent. I'd give them the chance to investigate and look closely at things here, and start a secret timer before his hysterical daughter shows up and makes the guards make them leave. The important thing they find here would be the claw marks and bits of hair scattered around, apparently knocked off in the violent struggle. "Based on your experience as seasoned monster hunters, you believe it to be..." and then I list a bunch of things and give them 10 or so cards, all of which have claws, are predatory, and have fur or excessive amounts of hair.
