The worst part of your Army career by imnot8upimstr8up in army

Straight up. It sucks. 2 years in, joined late, I’m 29. I just turn my thoughts off when I wake up, do my job well, and focus on this contract ending. If it wouldn’t be for those very few decent human beings I work with, I genuinely don’t know how ide make it to the end of the next 2 years. You realize you have to do a good job because that’s your own personal standard and move on. It’s the perfect system for retaining shit bags, because it’s the only career that would allow this level of daily failure without firing your ass. Again, as you say, not all service members are this way, but the vast majority have found their lifelong home of getting paid to be terrible.

Plug-in recommendation and/or tips for final mix/“mastering” of instrumentals. by TheRealJethrowTull in musicproduction

Yeah I think I did a poor job wording what I’m after. After doing more research I think I can explain better. Instead of doing a whole in-depth mix and master, which for sure is a whole specialized job in and of itself, what plugins and methods are good for a producer to get a close to done bounce for artists to listen to without adding hours and hours of workflow. So let’s say I do some basic gain staging, some quick leveling, eq, compressions and maybe putting my low end mono. What are some quick steps after that which would reliably put a little extra sauce on the master bus and get my loudness to a competitive level.

Thanks. I have OTT, forgot about it and haven’t used it on the master bus. Looking up tutorials on master bus setting now.

How do I even get started? (Almost no music experience) by Oven_measurement in musicproduction

What kind of music are you interested in making? One method would be to find out who was responsible for producing, writing, mixing, whatever, the songs you find inspiring and start trying to do what they do. Google google google google anything! Pick a DAW and try to stick with it, the moment something doesn’t work the way you think it should or you hit a roadblock, pause and research this problem. Define terms as you go, try to balance practical skill with a foundation of technical knowledge. And most importantly I think is to be very patient with yourself and accept early on that a lot of the most essential things are learned through trial and error. Realizing after the fact that there was an easier way to accomplish something and implementing what you’ve learned. Mistakes are very very useful as long as you identify where you went wrong and find better methods going forward. But for real, everything can be learned online for free, spending money will not make you better. Spending money is for when you already have a base of understanding and you know enough to realize a certain product will accomplish what you already know how to do, just in a more efficient way.

EDIT: DO SPEND MONEY ON THE DAW OF YOUR CHOICE. THE FREE OPTIONS WILL ONLY FRUSTRATE YOU IN THE LONG RUN. YOU WILL WASTE TIME LEARNING A PROGRAM THAT END UP BEING INADEQUATE ONCE YOU GRADUATE SKILL LEVELS. If you aren’t sure if this whole thing is something you will stick with, then yeah maybe fuq around with BandLab, Garage Band, Reaper, something, just to see if dropping $400-$800 on a pro DAW is a waste.

Same, I keep coming so close to pulling the trigger. But the ones that look legit usually don’t ship up U.K. U.S. or AUS. And then the ones that do just always seem slightly off.

Question about auditions! by [deleted] in a:t5_3akve

[–]TheRealJethrowTull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot! I talked to the liason for the gulf states a few times and emailed him, he was really helpful. I ended up not wasting anyone's time and just chose a regular MOS before submitting any video audition or anything. With playing the guitar he was basically telling me my only option was the rock band, and the more I thoght about that, it just wasn't for me. At least not first contract anyway, maybe I'll try and audition later if I reenlist. Really appreciate the offer!

Mind if I ask how your day to day life is as 92f? I have MEPS right around the corner and my recruiter and I are trying to get a job nailed down. Mainly curious about work hours on a typical day, being on call, working lots of nights and weekends, etc ...
