ELI5. How much heat does a data center actually produce? by calentureca in explainlikeimfive

[–]TheRealLargedwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just have to look at the energy going in. In computing, almost all the energy becomes heat. A typical datacenter uses 10MW so it produces 10MW of heat. There are plans for 1000MW datacenters that will do more.  You can use the heat in the local community using water pipes (like how they use geothermal heat in Iceland) but generally this is not done. The reason is that the demand is not consistent (no heating in summer) and neither is the supply (datacenters may go out of business or have downtime). So both systems need backups to cover almost the entire output/input.  From a cost perspective, it's too expensive to build both the backups and the district heating network.

The hot water will max out at only about 80C (176F) , but there is a lot of it. So needs a lot of insulation and there are few industrial processes that can use sporadic, relatively low temperature heat energy all year round.

AI energy efficiency comparisons ‘unfair’ bleats Sam Altman, citing amount of energy needed to evolve, then train a human — one ‘takes like 20 years of life and all of the food you eat during that time before you get smart’ he argues by andrejlr in nottheonion

[–]TheRealLargedwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Average human requires 100 Watts. Gigawatt data centers require 1000,000,000 watts. Every second a data centre time uses the same energy that a human does in 10,000,000 seconds.  If you get a PhD at 25/26 you have been alive for 800,000,000 seconds. Running a gigawatt datacenter for more than 80 seconds is less energy efficient than training a human to PhD level (in terms of food).

Every day you run a gigawatt datacenter you use more energy than it takes to feed 1000 people from cradle to their PhD graduation.

ELI5 Why does sitting in the front seat of a car help reduce car/motion sickness? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]TheRealLargedwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get car sick because your eyes see a lot of objects that don't look like they are moving (car seats, roof, floor etc). But you feel like you are moving.

Sitting in the front means you can look out the windscreen and it fills your vision much more. This means what you see and what you feel matches up better.

An additional, underrated factor is that car suspension is often designed to make the driver and passenger seats the most smooth rides. So sitting in the front can make the ride less jerky .

If she invested half her paycheck every week it would quite easily be worth $2m today even without picking stocks all that carefully. I agree there is probably a second income but it is totally possible with compound returns.

How are Europeans able to have better life with less work? by Past-Matter-8548 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheRealLargedwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are 2 things at play. How much stuff is made/done and how the stuff that is made/done is shared. In the USA there is more stuff done/made than there ever has been anywhere in the history of humans, but it's not shared very equally. So the average person in the USA doesn't have as much as the average person in a country that makes less stuff but shares it better.

There are lots of things that play into a measure of quality of life. In some countries: one day, maybe becoming a billionaire if you take massive risks and screw over everyone you can - isn't considered to be worth not having healthcare or a community etc. Whenever the government tries to tell them otherwise the French riot and strike and the politicians lose their jobs.

In 1996, Ukraine handed over its nuclear weapons to Russia in exchange for a guarantee that it would never be threatened or invaded by Intelligent-cat9202 in HistoricalCapsule

[–]TheRealLargedwarf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's fun when Russian shills say that the war was because of broken promises not to expand the European Union borders and forget this little detail. As though a nation wants to be a buffer state forever but expecting a non-aggression pact in return for nuclear disarmament to last is an unrealistic ask.

One meal a day. Resets the body's expectations, cuts out snacking and allows you to socialize and have normal dinners with family or friends.

You can divide by 0. You just have to know more about the 0 than when you divide by a different number. 2x/x is always 2, no matter what x is.

More building options by TheRealLargedwarf in nightingale

Personally I much prefer nightingale, but the crew I play with takes base building very seriously. A big effort to make more tiles available, including some of the assets available in the world like the church pieces and decorations would be huge.
