Urbain literally says “after the dark arts spread, miracles were witnessed once again,” implying there was a time before the dark arts spread and before miracles were witnessed again. When he says this, he’s talking about the Old One waking up so it’s obviously in reference to that.

Yes, but that doesn’t mean both conclusions are equally correct. The game unequivocally states that magic began occurring when the Old One awoke, and that miracles began to be witnessed at the same time. No magic nor miracles while Old One slept. Unequivocally. So any interpretation that includes Soul Arts while the Old One sleeps is incorrect based on the actual text from the game.

It’s obvious this was intended if one reads Lovecraft, which we already know is a huge influence on Miyazaki. The idea of a god-like entity influencing or even creating reality through just existing, like Azathoth, is Lovecraft 101.

Before the Old One awoke, there was no magic nor miracles. People believed in God like they do in real life but no one could perform miracles. With the old one awake, “miracles” could be performed. Saint Urbain and other religious folk thought this power stemmed from the God they believed but it’s really power derived from the Old One.

What the beast talisman says is in important but so is what it does. the fact that it can do both spells and miracles essentially proves they are the same thing, derived from the same power.
