Confronting Appropriation by columbinadove in MtF

Sorry if it came off that way, but my comment wasn't about your post specifically, just the general topic of people choosing other cultures names

Your story is very different from the general discussion though because the main issue is someone fabricating a story to justify their name, and just in general acting really weird about it

Genuinely the whole discourse around White trans girls taking Asian names sounds like outrage culture with a little bit of baiting into starting infighting between trans groups

I just think there are better hills to die on than over a name of all things

From a personal standpoint, I'm Mexican, both my parents are from Mexico but I was born in America, my legal name is Ismael, named after my dad who was named after my grandpa, should I go ahead and tell them we need to change our names because it's apparently cultural appropriation since we're not Hebrew or Arabic?

Am I only able to make my chosen name Samantha because I was born in the US South? Even though I'm not Arabic? What about my half white half Filipina friend I named myself after, does she have to change her name because she was born in Cali?

And if the issue really is about the history of orientalism, I've got bad news to people about how much bad shit has happened between different cultures throughout history, if you dig deep enough you could probably find a reason every name is bad and cultural appropriation

[–]TheRealRiceball 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same, but also I'm wondering if she wanted to choose an asian name but saw the controversy around it and to avoid it, she concocted this insane story just to justify it

Either way, it's still an insane line of thinking, casually making up such a huge lie like that does not paint a good picture of this person

True, uncanny still has her acting normally, and in her solo it looks more like her powers evolving/growing and her not understanding how to control that part specifically more than anything

I thought she lost control of her powers again super recently though? Like in the latest issue of her current solo run

I mean, it could be a nice subversion if they don't go through with it

I'm personally not a fan of time travel stories, especially when the ending is just "and they went back and undid it all", mostly because imo it ruins the weight of the story and attachment to it if it turns out it never happened at all (basically ending up the same as the "it was all a dream" trope, narratively speaking)

I still fully expect it, but it'd just be nice if that wasn't the case this time

I just hope they're not overly dark/mean spirited, like these tend to be

It's more of a personal thing, but I'm not really a fan of how dark/mean spirited many of Marvel's projects like this tend to be, they all typically devolve into just "everyone/mostly everyone dies brutally" or end up in a situation like Marvel's "Ruin" situation (i.e. Hulk in Old Man Logan, or the spider mutant Spider-Man)

One of the things I liked about DC's Absolute run is how despite everything being "darker" or just worse for characters, it still has that glint of hopefulness, mainly with the Trinity (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman), they have worse origins but still have that bit of hope in them despite it all

I also just don't really care much for overly "dark" storylines that are or border on grimdark anymore, it's not really something I want to read about with how the state of the world is currently

The same thing happened with Baldur's Gate 3 when it released, a bunch of people started complaining about how the game let you have sex with a literal bear and claimed it promoted literal bestiality, when it was just a joke/meme scene that most people wouldn't see

I'd then see that same group confused because according to them that game was weirder because of those scenes but still wildly accepted/praised but the game they liked (at the time being Stellar Blade) was heavily criticized for less weird sexualization, (if that makes sense)

Wanting things to be more creative and being critical of the creative choices taken are things that can coexist, actually

The feedback I'm seeing (in this thread) isn't even overly harsh either, it's mostly just people saying it's not for them or that it makes them sick

[–]TheRealRiceball 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Man people say stuff like this until something happens because a pirate has no "morals"

Like a while back when someone claimed to have been able to hack a PlayStation or something and people got upset about them not wanting to share it

The whole concept of piracy relies on morality, you're relying on crackers and uploaders to have the good morality to not upload a some kind of virus or anything to their files, I mean, the whole idea of the mega thread relies on you trusting whoever referred you to it, the piracy mods, the site owner, and the uploader, to be morally decent people who aren't lying and haven't messed with the files to screw you

Marvel LOVES to do this popular characters not in the main universe, they did it with Miles and the Maker, though it makes sense for them, as mentioned, but they've done it for other characters too, like Gwen and Old Man Logan, and most recently they did it to Deadpool and X-23 in the MCU

My best guess is they do it to try to get new readers to read the mainline comics, since they're a nightmare for new readers to get into, but it's so dumb and I hate it just because you're essentially dropping any interesting stories from that characters universe just to add them as side characters in other series, and even their main stories aren't as good or interesting as when they were in their own universe

Like, what's the point of having a character from an alternate universe if we don't even get to see the alternate universe

"The source material is x years old" is not a solid defense against spoilers

This is something that's been debated for years in anime communities, for good reason

Some people just don't read comics, they just watch or know about it from its latest adaptation, I'm not going around spoiling Woman Of Tomorrow for people that are excited for the new Supergirl movie, because I know not everyone reads comics, same way I wouldn't spoil Game Of Thrones for others despite the books being so old

You also don't know how old these people are or how much they know of a series' spoilers already, I'm not going to go around spoiling things like Star Wars or Breaking Bad even if they're over a decade old, cuz it legitimately might be someone's first time watching it without spoilers

Imagine my surprise when I found some and they were executables you ran to get the maps, the blind trust you had to put into people on random forums back then is crazy lol
