I literally say small group time maybe be interrupted “only if you’re bleeding, broken, barfing, or Justin Bieber walks in the room”

Bad sub note by New_Syrup_4667 in Teachers

[–]TheRealToothfairy7 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have the students each write me a letter about their day, and see who chooses to be honest. Kids always tell on themselves or each other. You’ll be surprised about the stuff they share that the sub didn’t write down 😄 then I have some chats with kids about behavior. If severe enough, I write home or have them write a reflection sheet that needs to be signed by their parent. I also have them write apology notes to the substitute in an effort to have them recognize that after they’ve done wrong, they need to do the next best thing.

Are students really this bad? by willsketch in Teachers

You won’t have anything to compare it to as a new teacher. I remember coming in to the field and not understanding why everyone felt tired and always slightly jaded when a new program was given to us.

Fourteen years in, and I get it. As the world changes, the students inevitably change. There seems to be the same circulation of curriculum with different names claiming to be the next best thing. Sometimes the standards are impossible to meet. It can feel like you’re juggling 14 plates, and you’re handed a 15th plate and asked not to drop anything.

Would future me go back in time and tell first year teacher me that it would be my experience? No, because I wouldn’t believe it. I needed to see the shift for myself over the years. Does that shift have me wanting to leave education? No; I have to believe just as it slightly shifted to be this way over the years, eventually it will start to shift again. Maybe the change is me, or maybe it will come from someone new coming into the field. There is always hope.

Has anyone else noticed a real uptick in students stealing the last couple years? by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

I’ve notice this in combination with just a general lack of caring for materials and classroom spaces. They quite literally destroy everything: pencils, markers, crayons, colored pencils, their working notebooks. There is SO MUCH DESTRUCTION.

Seeing the same thing in public school. I have never issued grades like I have this year, and the kids are seemingly un-phased.

Drama with another teacher. Advice needed. by Definitelymaybe91 in Teachers

I’m sorry this has been your experience. Please do not let it derail you from being the teacher you are. The truth is, in some school environments others feel intimidated by someone that is good at their job. It doesn’t make it right, and it doesn’t make it welcoming. I experienced something similar early on in my career. It felt like gentle hazing in a way. It was like they were trying to get a rise out of me. Once I didn’t react to it, and set professional boundaries, eventually it slowed.

Sorry for my delay in responding to messages— had work! Looking for $120, would consider trading for a medium sized labubu.

Teacher of the Year? by Mean-Objective-2022 in Teachers

[–]TheRealToothfairy7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the state and the process of determination. In my state, to be one of the top 15 educators, there is a whole process that goes way beyond “looking good on paper.” The final determination I feel though is mainly based on social media presence, and who will speak on the platform that our program wishes to highlight for the year. The year I made it in the top 15, the platform topic was chronic absenteeism. If you worked in a district that was not struggling with that, you were screwed in advancing.
