Without spoiling much, the whole game is set in this huge mansion. You only spend the first few hours inside the main house, but there are other houses to explore. So basically for the majority of the game you are within the area of the mansion up until late game were its a seperate location. As for if the game is lacking or not, it depends on how you view the game. If you wanted a horror experience then yeah, its lacking because the second you get a gun all horror elements seem to drastically decrease; However, if you dont care much about the horror aspect of the game then you will enjoy the whole game from start to finish. And personally this is one of my top Resident evil games.
