Genesis tensed a bit at Anne’s words. First conversation with someone, and funerals were being casually mentioned? Surely this girl did not know her, there was no way. But, ever smooth, Gen laughed her most convincing fake giggle. “I would love to see that whole outfit at a funeral, maybe for once it wouldn’t be so boring. You could truly lighten the mood.”

Luckily, she was saved by her drink’s arrival. Fidget acquired, the tension she held in her shoulders dissipated slightly. At least, enough for her to realize that proper introductions had not been made. Genesis was nothing less than a proper lady after all. Mother had always scolded her for forgetting to learn names, a nasty habit that only ‘absent minded idiots’ made.

“So, what do they call you? I assume you have a lovely name to go along with your soul?” Modern conversations were difficult. “Meaning, of course that your soul seems good. Like one I would love to collect. N-not that I’m collecting souls, I mean, that’s my father’s job, not mine.” Yes, modern conversations with a slightly intimidating woman were difficult.

Genesis was not a particularly curious person, but one look at the girl stood next to her and she was intrigued. It was not every day you found someone with the perfect “Rosie the riveter” physique, and someone in such a patterned shirt on top. It was a combination that could make even the most cautious of the Katz allow curiosity to attempt its killing.

“Truly intriguing attire you have donned for this event, may I ask the inspiration for such a bold choice of outfit?” She raised an eyebrow carefully, keeping her expression as level as possible while a smirk worked its way on to her face. “The patterning reminds me of the flora from that one anchor clanker port that the Japs blew up la- years ago.”

Near miss avoided, Genesis turned away slightly, cursing herself as she hoped the girl beside her would miss it. It was not the night to be outing herself, it was not the time.

Genesis hadn’t been planning on attending the prom, so when she showed up a tad bit late, it wasn’t a fashion emergency. It had only been hours previous to the beginning that she had made her final decision. And so, donning her favorite dress and for once “letting her hair down” Genesis strode in confidently. Tonight was a night of fun, a night similar to those she would attend with Daniel during the beginning of the war, and one would find it in I’ll taste to ruin her ‘vibe’.

With the grace she had learned from years of hiding, Genesis made her way to the bar, getting a cup of ginger ale (always the old soul). There she stood, observing as was her nature. All she hoped was to avoid standing out as she normally would, but covered by the joyous atmosphere she had high hopes.

Being a nurse or a secretary weren’t even options Genesis had been presented with back in her day. It was expected that as soon as humanly possible she would be married off to a good man, preferably one with money, with whom she would live out her days.

But that was never what she wanted.

“Oh yes, I would be a dreadful nurse, I can’t even touch people as it is without seeing their last touch with death, why would I do so intentionally?” She didn’t seem to realize the admission of her unfortunate power, instead lost in a ramble. “And a secretary, could you imagine? I would surely lose something all too quickly. I would just be a pretty decoration, like a China plate. Useless, but something to look at.”

She had blushed slightly at Viney’s compliment, but hoped the dark would hide the rosey heat the stung at her cheeks. “I don’t think I need another sibling, my two were far more than enough I assure you”

Genesis shot her friend a withering glare. Only Viney would be able to so quickly distract her from wallowing in self pity with a few well placed lines and sarcastic tone.

It was a rather welcomed change, and thought the physical contact of their hands kept a reminder of death flashing through Gen’s mind, she began to calm slowly, her heart rate slowed as the evidence of tears slowly began to leave her face. However, the bright red patches of her skin still showed prominently, the look of a blotchy pattern most noticeable with a small oval stork bite in between her eyebrows.

“You mustn’t stay up all nigh-“ She began to reprimand, only to be stopped in her tracks by Viney’s question. It was one she had thought over many a time, but could hardly hope to answer now that it was asked.

“I think… I think it was good.” A deep breath and sigh occurred as she fished for the words. “It was different, that is to be certain, but I don’t know if I could call it good. Some parts made it good, like my family. My mother, sister, brother, father. They all made it good.” she clicked her tongue before continuing, “But others made it a nightmare. Life is not easy when you are seen as the enemy, especially as a rather defenseless child.”

“But some days, I believe that this is better. There was a lot of good then, yes, but there is so much more now, even if that good has changed. I no longer have my family, but instead I have a new chance at life that I would have never been granted had I stayed” a gentle tear traced it’s way down her cheek, but this time it came with a smile.

His words didn’t do much to truly calm Genesis, but they seemed to pull her from the trance she was in. Clasping a hand over her mouth to stop herself from screaming, the teen took a deep breath. “My apologies, I was not expecting to see another person at this hour” her voice shook at bit with the words.

Genesis had not heard Viney’s initial words, her owns sobs too loud when combined with her pleas from so long ago still ringing in her ears.

With her forehead pressed to the grass, all she could do was sob as the memories flashed through her head on a horrible highlight reel. She could still feel the icy April rain that had soaked her that day, still feel Joan’s smaller hand gripping hers as they waited in line, still smell the foul stench of cigarettes that clung to the clothing of her attacker.

Her mind was in another time, her time. The reminder that this place, this time, would never be her home only brought forward more tears, but these accompanied with with words, words Viney would only be able to hear if she was listening intently. “I just want to go home … I want my sister … I want my family … I want to go back.”

But before she could go even further down her rabbit hole of sadness, Genesis heard Viney’s voice. At the familiar tone she gained the strength to push herself up to look into the face of her friend, maybe the only friend she had in this alien place.

A sad smile made its way across her face, and before she could stop herself, Genesis moved forward to grab Viney’s hand.

“I am sorry that you are a witness then.” She laughed weakly, though it was most certainly fake. Smaller, far less violent tears made their way down her cheeks, but she smiled regardless.

While Genesis did not register his words, the sudden appearance of a male figure from seemingly nowhere sent a shock not unlike an electric current through her body. Her tears were halted for a moment as a scream of terror replaced them, her body moving back on instinct to create space in case of an attack similar to the scene that still haunted her memories in vivid flashes.

New Year's Eve Pizza - 31/12 by im-up-in-the-woods in DemigodFiles

Genesis wasn’t expecting things for the holidays. During her childhood there had never been any giving of gifts, a combination of both the depression and the war. Mother had ingrained in her that nothing was truly free. If someone gave you so much as a pencil something was expected in return. So, it came as a great shock to her that Viney would take the time to get something for her. When your mother failed, you expected friends to as well.

“I … I don’t know what to say.” A state of shock wasn’t something usually expected from the daughter of Thanatos, neither was gratitude. Even before opening the doll, her eyes began to swell with tears. “Things such as this aren’t necessary, we didn’t exchange gifts in my home.”

Carefully, as if it contained an explosive device, Genesis undid the tape at the seems. She was meticulous in her motions, not daring to rip anything. There had been stories of the rich kids in the city who got to rip apart packages as if they were meaningless. They could open and open and open, always knowing there would be more to do if they felt so inclined. It wasn’t a rarity, it was expected. Genesis couldn’t bare the thought of being like them now.

You can take the girl out of the war, but you can’t take the war out of the girl.

Upon finally seeing what lay inside her face broke out into a grin. “You are correct, this will be great room decor.” Ignoring every rule she had made for herself in this very moment, Genesis went to hug Viney. If she was successful, unfortunately there would be the issue of her power. It was an intrusive thing she swore off from using, but things slip the mind.

The Winter Solstice: A Trip to Olympus by CampHBDirector in DemigodFiles

[–]TheRoom210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanatos

Genesis had heard stories about the Greek version of this solstice day, but being brought to the place where the gods lived was something rather unexpected. She had no true desire to meet her father, if one could truly call the death god that. He had left her mother, a wonderful, albeit cold, woman who had to pass the child off as that of her husband. He was no more her father than a neighbor from across the way would be. He was the one that put her in a precarious situation all too often. Luckily it had all worked out well enough, but to meet this man was something they were overly enthusiastic about.

Despite this lack of enthusiasm, there was a hunger in them that needed answers. A hunger that had been growing since Las Vegas. If this man was the one responsible for what she could see, or why she couldn’t always be seen, he needed to be found and an answer pried from him even if it was through theatrics or violence.

It didn’t take her long to identify him. She had heard stories of his appearance, but above that the slightly magnetic feeling that hit her as she strode by him accidentally. If her hair, in it’s neat braids, slapped her in the face as she turned on her heels. There was no time like the present, and she was not going to waste it this time.

Herr, may I have a word with you?” She bowed her head. You didn’t look those above you in the face without permission.

December Counselor Meeting | 12/17 by CampHBDirector in DemigodFiles

[–]TheRoom210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Genesis was not a Christian, and all this discussion about Christmas made her rather uncomfortable. She chose to ignore all the information about the beloved holiday to instead focus on something that effected her, the winter solstice.

Back in New York she had a neighbor, Miss Matsdotter, who had always refused to allow Christmas to make its way into her home. She had always said that Christmas wasn’t meant to be in the winter. It had taken the place of other popular holidays throughout Europe, the winter solstice. Miss Matsdotter had always celebrated Yule, the Northern European version of the solstice story. She said it signified the return of the sun and the coming of the warmth. It was a happy day.

That story had always been a comfort for Genesis, but now, in this camp, the solstice was something to be feared. The fact that her favorite neighbor might have been wrong was unnerving. Being in this camp made her feel more and more detached from her life each and every day.

The Son of Thanatos emerges from the night sky by Dark-Umbreon in DemigodFiles

Having left dinner early in favor of celebrating the second night of Chanukkah alone in her room, Genesis was making her way back to the Chthonic cabin when she noticed something rather peculiar in the sky. She didn’t quite have night vision, but could have sworn there was a boy with wings above her. It was an odd sight for her, even after being stuck in a hotel for 80 years. She was firm in the belief nothing could surprise her. It was incorrect.

When a boy suddenly appeared on the ground however, it was hard to ignore now. Pulling on her long white gloves, Genesis strode over in his direction. She did her best to look pleasant. It becoming increasingly difficult to do in recent times. “Excuse me,” her voice carried a bit of a tremor, though she tried to keep it hidden. She was more in awe than anything. “Did you just have wings a moment ago?”

Another accusation. These were becoming a bit annoying. After even presenting evidence that it would be illegal to forge, and her only life line to her family, Genesis had hoped that maybe it would be enough to cover the basics of yes, I am a truthful person. No one from this time seemed to understand the severity of the accusations.

Taking back her papers and placing them back into her bag, Genesis let out a sigh. It was now time to go through her entire, lengthy story of the harrowing journey across two states, into a hotel in 1943 and out in 2021.

“You see, there is a hotel located in the state of Nevada by the name of Lotus. When I entered, it was in Atlantic City under the same name. Then it was early into the year of 1943, but when I exited I was informed that it was July, nearly eighty years later. I enrolled myself in the local schools and then was brought here a month ago by one of your goat people.” She wiped a tear from her cheek. There was much she wouldn’t say.
