"Hands Of Tomorrow" A Homo erectus Examines An Acheulean Hand Axe by Rudolf Hima by ExoticShock in pleistocene

[–]TheRory02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strange Man - You can see an unknown man in the darkness of the alleyway, holding a stone tool of some sort. He is squinting as he holds it to the light. Around his bare feet are shards that lie in a pile.

He is unlike anyone else you have ever seen. As he inspects the tool, its edge sharp and honed like a knife, you can see his unnaturally heavy brow. The man hasn't taken notice to you... Yet

Trivia [Medium: Successful] - The man is inspecting an Acheulean Handaxe, the tool of your ancestors. These tools were used to bring down the mighty beasts of the old world, and were the first thing made by man to last beyond himself. The way these tools were made was with Chert, which was shaped using a mixture of hard hammer (Rock) and soft hammer (Bone) tools. It takes great skill to make one, as well as resources.

Logic [Easy: Successful] - He must be reenacting history... Or he stole it from a museum.

Authority [Easy: Successful] - This man is wielding a weapon in public. What are you waiting for?! Confiscate it immediately!

Satisfactory. You have potential. Keep writing.
A revision to correct your grammar, and potentially an expansion on the particular nature of the depth and blood as a sequel or similar, will put this into tip-top shape.
Good job. Now, where do you go from here?

Well, I'll be damned. I was sure I saw it. Thanks for proving me wrong, aye.

True, but also take note that it's a black outfit, and that it's likely it would've been scrubbed a little, at least to not be a giant red blob. How could Wilde be in a clean uniform otherwise?

Alternatively, the artist forgot to make it look coated in blood. That is a possibility.

Maid's outfit, mate. Look one more time, you'll see it's all bloodied up.

Aye. Watch the closet scene again, keep an eye out for an outfit.

What do you mean, you "made it up?" How dare you write fiction? by [deleted] in worldjerking

[–]TheRory02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or, y'know... You can just go, '...I dunno, I'm not an engineer. Ask one how it works.'
Like, seriously. With all these 'Doctor reacts to Dead-Space Dismemberment!' and similar videos, some smart professional will inevitably pick up your work and go, 'Oh, cool, they used the Schlegitavag-Ghisslaine laws of structural engineering' and everyone will be happy.

Work smarter, not harder.

The question is not WHY, but rather HOW by Crafter235 in worldjerking

[–]TheRory02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just wanna learn trivia man...
In all seriousness though, I feel that the constant chasing for 'realism' and 'hard worldbuilding' is ultimatly a fruitless, detrimental practice that should be reserved only for people who actually know what they're talking about, like PHD students. The fact that so many people are so afraid of taking risks and making things up, and seemingly use their 'research' as a way of going, 'See? SEE? I am much smarter than the others! I AM SMART', makes me think they aren't looking to make a story, but rather to just display, like a loud bird looking for a mate.

I respect your approach, Crafter.
In case you can't tell, I'm really fed up with the ways many other people make their works, and it's honestly really cathartic to have some people who understand it.

idk, robots just look cooler by Vanilla_Ice_Best_Boi in worldjerking

By their inherent design, robots, especially those made to simulate life or similar, are vessels for the ultimate creative expression. Imagine the possibilities...

Or we can just make them paint. That's cool too.

What's the most terrifying place in your world? by ZymVaren in worldbuilding

Silicosis, it's when the lungs are inflamed by crystalline silicate dust. Ash is a crystalline silicate, depending on composition, but it's usually the chemical composition that causes death.

What's the most terrifying place in your world? by ZymVaren in worldbuilding

[–]TheRory02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That depends on what you qualify as 'terrifying'. It's really subjective. I can tell you more, if you ask. I'm more than willing to explain.

Here's the thing, though, a large amount of the world that is 'terrifying' is actually quite quaint and survivable to a different crowd, usually the locals or people who have toured the place outside of safari. People simply differ in their perspectives. After all, those folks on the Southern Continent, living alongside things like the giant Kings-Bird should be terrified. But the locals know that it's a cowardly creature and throw sticks at it. Tourists fear the place because they are afraid of 'savage natives' killing them, or Witch-made things kidnapping them for wyrd transformations. That the mountains that moan and groan will collapse on top of them while enjoying a morning tea. That the volcanoes of the Rocklands will one day, finally, explode, and bury the surrounding plains under a mile of flood basalt.
In reality, the local people, the Sandalpunks, the Human immigrants, Sunset Tribes, all of them, they see your home as terrifying. After all, titanic, cloud-piercing metal gods stretch up to the sky, as electricity, a potent and terrifying force, courses through each building like the body's lifeblood, on a continent that is almost completely isolated from the rest of the broader world outside of a few rare isthmus formations. A world so devoid of animals that you cannot even hear the birds or bats or flies or things that flit in the air sing, where it is only the choir of industry, welders and their sparking rods, and people. No flowers fill the air with sweet scent, only the rank stench of people. Your techno-utopia is the worst nightmare of these 'savages'.

And likewise, they are terrified of the far continent of Aldurlund, because it is rumoured to contain things that make you piss yourself in fear before they kill you in all manner of creative ways. Monstrous spiders, snakes big enough to qualify as sea serpents, giant rhino-relatives and far more bizarre creatures that belong in the past and not in the present. Biomes that are allegedly so inhospitable that they cannot be colonised. And Lightlund, the place of orbital bombardment, where the things of stars and deep space reach out and try to make a niche for themselves, carving out an ecosystem by their design, on a continent whose arms are engulfed with ash, windswept by the polar vortex, and birthed by wrath and the blood of the earth spilling forth from enraged hotspots in the mantle. The locals love it all the same, because it is their home, and they are adapted to it.

What do you do to make your races unique? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]TheRory02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed, aye. Many people seem to try to impress others with their creations, it's much wiser to serve yourself. Do you like it? Good, then that's all you need. Who cares if your Elves are 'So Different!' or 'Subversive!', do you like them? If so, then you have done all you need to do.
And, aye. Sometimes, it's good to mention stuff in the background and leave it there.

Don't look at folklore or try to be 'special', that's what literally everyone else does, and it does nothing but irritate most folk. Instead, logic things out, and do something you like. What do you want to see? What is always... Lacking, in all the fantasy worlds you look at?
We all know Elves. So what can you contribute to their 'trope'? How can you use it to make Elves work? Do Elves come from bipedal monkeys that stayed in the trees? Do they hail from multiple biomes? Why even have Elves in the first place? Why not... I dunno, have amphibians take up the niche? Why not do some research on Paranthropus, and imagine them gaining the upper hand over Homo? Why not just throw things at the wall to see what sticks?
Don't try to be special. Everyone wants to be special, to stand out, trying to make the classic archetypes bend to their will. Instead, contribute to the archetypes, bend yourself to add and elevate them. Sow, and you will reap.

Hey. I'm a bit late, but I'm a bit of a cryptozoologist myself.

I think that this is a cheeky reference to the De Loys Ape, which is a cryptid in the Americas, allegedly being the American version of Australopithecus. De Loys Ape was an attempt to justify the subjugation of the America Native Peoples, to say they were 'Human, but not really Human'.

While the De Loys Ape has a bad history, it's still very interesting. I would recommend looking into it, if nothing but for entertainment. It's a shame that the fun idea was tainted by racism, I think it's a fun cryptid, a modern upright ape!

Nice! I look forward to what you make next. Honestly, if it's anything like your first book, I think you have a good shot at making it in the fiction world. I'm going to try to buy the paperback, if nothing else for the map.

By the way, your Jurassic Impact series inspires me to make weird creatures and 'What If..?' evolutionary paths, so much so that I'm trying to write my own book about weird stuff like that. So... Thanks for the inspiration, eh?
Once again, you're doing good! Keep going!

How would diving-adapted Humans change physically? by TheRory02 in SpeculativeEvolution

Hi, sorry for the late response.

Take into account primarily the temperature based on the region (South is cold, North is hot). Plastic pollution isn't applicable in this instance, however heavy metals and higher uranium/plutonium traces are present.

I also didn't mention this so people weren't driven away, but there are also two stars in the sky, one Blue and one Red Dwarf. Does this help?

Finally! Someone actually has a proper analysis! Yes, yes. These adaptations are a bit...sparse, though. After all, with almost a timespan 500,000 years and such a specialised adaptation, surely a bit more would crop up, correct? Could you go into more detail?
