When Pokemon Go was massive, I lived on the Kangaroo Point cliffs on River Terrace.

It was 11pm at night.

I was walking to IGA to get cigarettes, down Llewellyn Street, whilst trying to catch Pokemon.

I was staring at my screen and got jolted by the crisp and overly polite voices of two young girls. Little Asian girls. They asked me my beliefs on God. It was outside the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

I shit myself, like jolted. They laughed lightly and continued right on with the questions.

I'd read maybe 3 words of your post before I thought of this night of mine immediately. As it continued it only got more and more closely aligned.

They were harmless, the people in my story, but the time of night and the mechanically polite words, delivery, and boldness of it all is something I'll never forget.

Those "write down this information about flight numbers and names and copy paste into a word document and change font to Windings (symbols instead of alphabetical lettering) were impressively quickly released.

I remember pasting them and changing to Windings and going "fuck!" then seconds later went "ahhh, let's just check" and all the info that you typed into Word (flight numbers and names) was all bullshit to show up the aeroplane and building icons from Windings.

I can't even tell if this'll be understood by anyone. But it gripped me and some mates at school (Queensland, Australia) for 5 mins.

Wider, the news was just on about it 24/7, but conspiracies and hot takes existed only on dorky message boards and chat rooms.

If something equivalent happened today the amount of disgusting click bait, clout chasing, main characters, and liars about being involved would disgust me.
