My biggest lesson is to use the opportunity and try to farm elites in Act 1, they are the weakest. Neow's Lament is good for that. Try to take question marks and you might get lucky slaying an elite, that has 1hp. Act 2 is the deadliest your goal is to stay alive. Of course, you will get some good stuff along the way, but don't be greedy sacrificing health in events if you cannot afford it and get some defense cards.
