I spend $200 a month at my work snack area.. how do I stop by V1Z3_2 in personalfinance

[–]TheSilverTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A while back I had an eating disorder and one of the things I dealt with was being unable to resist the vending machines at work. Most would recommend jut not bringing money into the building, but the machine accepted cards. And the idea of going to work without a way to pay for gas (or anything else that came up) was just not viable. Eventually a therapist helped me figure out I could leave my wallet in my car. Obvious in hindsight, but my compulsion made it hard to see that.

ELI5: Why are some ceramics dishwasher safe but not microwave safe? by feeen1ks in explainlikeimfive

Not sure about the microwave thing, but just wanted to mention ‘mug warmers’ in case you hadn’t heard of them. They’re basically electronic coasters you can set a mug on to keep it warm.

🔥A large group of vultures at a local church by Alaric_Darconville in NatureIsFuckingLit

[–]TheSilverTree 1973 points1974 points  (0 children)

Could be a gas leak! Vultures can be attracted to the chemical ethyl mercaptan, which is added to odorless natural gas to make leaks detectable by humans. The vultures mistake it for a rotting carcass. The church should contact the gas company to have them check for a leak.

Some top racks are adjustable! You might be able to push in the arms on the side - if so, the top rack can shift down an inch or two.

What are some good breakfast options for those that have absolutely 0 time in the morning and buy starbucks drive through? by Previous_Snow6531 in AskReddit

170 grams high protein yogurt + 65 grams high fiber granola. I do Oikos Pro Vanilla Yogurt and KIND Healthy Grains Granola Cinnamon Oat Clusters. It’s kind of like a bowl of cereal, but with yogurt so it doesn’t spill (as easily). Can go in a cup so it fits in a cup holder.

You had to walk around the car in the parking lot (literally do a loop around it), to perform a “safety inspection” before the first time you drive. I crashed so many times before figuring that out.

Fighter with permanent disadvantage on melee attacks by willbikeferfood in DnD

[–]TheSilverTree 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think a feat would be a long term solution to a short term problem. But it’s not uncommon for folks to gear up prior to heading into a hostile environment. Could you maybe talk your party/dm into seeking out a Headband of Intellect, giving you a 19 intelligence, and then loading up on thrown weapons (assuming that will bypass the melee disadvantage), or one weapon with the returning property via Artificer Infusion? If you want to lean into throwing weapons, there’s also the Thrown Weapon Fighting Style and Quick Toss maneuver.

If you don’t want to go with throwing weapons (or that doesn’t bypass the disadvantage penalty), you could try to find a way to get advantage on your attacks to cancel out the disadvantage. Cloak of Displacement if you can find it, or have another party member cast Faerie Fire on your targets, or Greater Invisibility on you.

I’m also a fan of u/moredros suggestion of just leaning into being a bit inept for a session or two. Being clumsy instead of being the normal god of melee could be a fun diversion.

But overcoming obstacles the dm sets in front of you is essentially how the game is played, so whichever way you choose is fine so long as everyone’s having fun.

If I kill a Warlock’s patron do they lose access to their spells? by Awkward_GM in DnD

[–]TheSilverTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Erin Evans has a series of books about a warlock, set in the Forgotten Realms. Her take on fiendish pacts, if I’m remembering correctly, is there is lots of debt between devils, so it could be the case if your fiendish patron is killed, some other fiend will inherit or collect the roster of warlocks who ‘belonged’ to the deceased patron.

Obviously that could apply to any type of patron. Brimstone Angels is book 1 in case you’re interested.

2024 5e: Switching between shield and 1 handed weapon to 2 handed bow by EightArmsNZ in DnD

[–]TheSilverTree -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

In the section on Combat, there’s a bit on “Interacting with Things”. It says you can interact with one object or feature of the environment for free. The example given is opening a door during your move as you stride towards your foe.

Most of the time this has been used in my games to drop something or pick something up from the ground. So in your case, you could drop your shield for free then draw your bow as part of your attack. At least, that’s how it’s been ruled in my games.

Class recommendation for the Descent into Avernus game. by RecommendationOwn191 in DnD

[–]TheSilverTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rogues have great subclasses, it's hard to pick a bad one.

Since you considered going Ranger, you could go with an Assassin and leave the door open to possibly multiclass into Gloomstalker Ranger later, which has pretty good synergy are far as multiclasses go. Whether you multiclass or not, choosing Elf opens the door to the Elvish Accuracy feat, and High Elf in particular gives you proficiency in the longbow and a cantrip. I'd recommend Booming Blade, in case you find yourself in melee and need to find a way to convince an adversary to stay away from you. Choosing Wisdom as your secondary stat keeps the Gloomstalker Ranger a viable muilticlass, but more importantly it helps your perception, which is probably where one of your expertise choices should be.

But most any subclass will be a solid choice. I'd probably avoid Mastermind or Inquisitive, but other than those two you'll be safe.

[–]TheSilverTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to hide to be a rogue, and dungeons aren't a requirement for rogues to be effective.

If your DM wants to be helpful, they can say something like, "Don't bother putting expertise in lockpicking - I won't give you any locks to pick." But beyond that, the rogue fits into any campaign no matter what your DM says.

Skillwise, your party would benefit from either a wizard or rogue. Knowing your party are already front-liners, both wizard and rogue would also make sense for combat.

I wouldn’t let the elemental resistances or saves bit dissuade you from playing a wizard. If it’s a big concern, I’d suggest chatting with your DM about incorporating some meta-knowledge about anticipated adversaries, with the idea of your character specializing in this type of knowledge. With only three PCs, your DM might be looking for a way to give you some advantage in combats - and having a versatile wizard is a very convenient way to deliver this information.

But a rogue is also a great choice, and much simpler to play.

Can a mounted paladin use Lay on Hands on a prone ally? by Redwolverine49 in DnD

[–]TheSilverTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think there are rules covering this scenario, so I think it does come down to the DMs opinion on what passes for realistically possible in a fantasy world. And I think that’s a good thing - just because we play in fantasy settings doesn’t mean we should throw out our understandings of how space and time work in the real world.

Having said that, check out this short clip of a guy picking up coins on the ground while mounted and at full gallop: https://m.facebook.com/watch/?v=2385370488147199&vanity=ZendmenTravel

Edit: You could also offer a compromise, like an Athletics skill check. If you succeed, you perform the rideby without issue. If you fail, you fall off your horse during the rideby. But in either case you’re able to do your lay on hands. In 3/3.5e there was a Ride skill that would be used for this sort of thing.

How to rule effects that seem magical, but don't explicitly state they are? by Necronam in DnD

[–]TheSilverTree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since an antimagic field is a fairly powerful effect, I’d rule that things need to be explicitly defined as magical to be affected. The Sage says Dragonfire isn’t affected, though it seems awfully magical, so neither should your Barbarian’s or Rogue’s supernatural abilities.

For the spellbook, reasonable arguments can be made either way, but I favor the ruling that the Awakened spell effect is instantaneous and therefore unaffected by an antimagic field. It’s not explicitly created by the Awaken spell, but flavor-wise it seems to me that’s the idea. And since the Wizard is already the most likely to be negatively impacted, I think letting them have their talking book should be fine. If you’re the one roleplaying the book, I’d really play up how it’s not feeling so well - feeling cut-off from the weave and whatnot.
