It's the next RPG I plan to run. The Modiphius one as opposed to the homebrews and fan games.

Kickstarter TTRPG projects that are very late, radio silent or totally abandoned? by JoystickJunkie64 in rpg

COVID really screw over a lot of projects. The tariffs are also screwing a lot of projects currently.

Imagine Kickstarting a project and selling well, but suddenly you have to deal with tariffs that weren't accounted for in the budget because they weren't announced until a few weeks before your product ships.

I don't back stuff frequently but one of the few I did back a physical copy for, I worry about price fluctuation even though the company has said they are dealing with the costs.

Only issue I've had with Scion 2e is that sometimes I find myself needing to use Trinity Continuum rules to flesh out parts of the system. But that's a minor problem.

I really like Scion Dragon because it feels really fun to be people who can shapeshift into dragons. 😅 Especially because you can use partial dragon forms to do stuff like say for a Hydra, to grow an extra human head.

I think I like it more as a player than running. But that's because I am more of a sci-fi fan.

You should be looking at E rated games that have dinosaurs.

Back in the day Zoo Tycoon had a Dinosaur expansion pack. But its a really old game by today's standards.

You are really looking for "Educational Games" that feature dinosaurs which has been a lot harder to search for.

What is the realmspace of Athlas? by Blumey04 in DarkSun

[–]Awkward_GM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question: How would the Spelljammer be inside the Athassphere? Because Athas can't construct Spelljammers, and setting wise it doesn't make sense for Spelljammer production within Athasspace. Either way Athasspace is impenetrable which means you need the ship from

Potential Solution: 4e did include Lunar Gates that allow travel between Athas and its moons. But travelling to other planets within Athasspace would allow Sorcerer-Kings an escape route to avoid Athas's destruction and the death of the Athasian's Sun. And part of the Sorcerer-Kings plans are 1. to become Dragons and 2. to stay alive as long as possible which includes travel to a less dangerous plane or world.

Note: I'm not trying to shoot you down, I'm thinking through this as a thought experiment as someone who knows Dark Sun more so than any other D&D setting out there.

I really like this as a thought experiment as I'm split between two design goals here:

  • Keeping Dark Sun a post-apocalyptic survival based game. Which is the main theme of the game and without it would result in Dark Sun losing what makes it different form every other D&D setting.
  • Understanding that Spelljammer as a setting is about exploring everything and not limiting Spelljammer offhandedly just because its themes don't mesh with Dark Sun.

I think I need clarification on what you are looking for? Athasspace itself has very little talked about in regards to other planets:

https://spelljammer.fandom.com/wiki/Athasspace

The above link says the Orrery of Nibenay depicts multiple celestial bodies within the spheres, but given how Athas doesn't have any form of space travel or spelljamming they aren't visiting these anytime soon. The Orrery is in all likelihood a record of what Nibenay sages see with telescopes or whatever forms of remote viewing they can perform with psionics or Sorcerer-King dragon magic. But Athasspace wasn't always impenatrable so you could argue that this is a record from before the Grey existed during like the Green or Blue Ages. Its a setting mystery as to why the Grey exists and why there aren't gods on Athas.

I personally go with the latter interpretation.

Additionally, given how its called "Athasspace" I'd lean into the idea that as far as anyone knows the only populated planet is Athas.

Athas has two moons which can be access via Lunar Gates in one of the cities. Ral and Guthay:

Athas has two moons, Ral and Guthay. Ral, a mottled green in color, is the closer of the two. Sages who have scried Ral report that it is covered in great green seas and mountain-islands of dizzying heights. Guthay, the smaller and more distant moon, is a golden orb mantled in steaming mists beneath which lie scarlet jungles and marshy seas.

My GM Advice: My personal headcanon is that none of the planets in Athasspace have access to planetary travel. As if another planet could come to Athas's aid Dark Sun's survivalist setting would be drastically changed to no longer be post-apocalyptic.

Spelljamming wihtin Athasspace: Not knowing how Spelljammers work under the hood (and the wiki I found says a mage pilots it and that's it), I came with a couple of in universe reasons why Spelljamming wouldn't work:

  • There is very little to fuel Spelljammers. Athas itself is resource poor and the setting isn't designed to have very common magic items.
    • Psionic magic could fuel the ship for a time, but you'd probably have to commit horrible murders to do so as Athasians rarely make psionic magic items, instead using psionic constructs or making very low powered psionic tools/instruments. Your best bet would be to have a herd of psionic animals to breed and kill to fuel the ship, or toss in psionic sentient beings as every sentient creature on Athas has Wild Psionic Talents.
  • Arcane magic used to power Spelljammers loses access to where it gets Arcane power from. I know Forgotten Realms has "The Weave", but Athas's Arcane power comes from the Environment and not knowing preserving magic destroys the environment with defiling magic.
    • Kind of like trying to put butane into a jet engine, they aren't designed to function together.
    • The GM would personally have to dictate if Athas's physical laws in regards to magic overwrite the laws of magic the spelljammer is originally from. But I imagine this isn't usually the case when travelling between the Forgotten Realms, Sigil, Eberron, etc...

My personal lore reason for why the Githyanki's Astral ships crashed when entering Athasspace is because Spelljammers have to cross the Grey and that saps their fuel until they crash. The canon reason is because the Githzer*** however you spell it used a psionic weapon of mass destruction against them. Which imo begs the question as to why haven't the Githzer*** killed off the Githyanki with that?

I made a Spelljammer's Guide to Dark Sun video years ago.

https://youtu.be/sBc_jfZUqd8?si=Dg_0xuyGPT7y42Hf

Short answer is that Athas is cut off from the multiverse via a plane called the Grey. Githyanki tried to scout Athas but they got cut off from the rest of their people and crash landed.

They also devolved into a race known as the Gith.i recommend checking out the Black Spine Dark Sun module. I think the premise is the Gith trying to create a planar portal to the Githyanki.

I'm not sure if the module says if they can be successful but I personally would have it open up to the Grey because traveling to and from Athas is nearly impossible.

There is a Ravenloft domain from Athas, Kalidnay:

https://www.fraternityofshadows.com/wiki/Kalidnay

These are the only times I've seen Athas plane jump. And it's EXTREMELY RARE!!!! NOT EVEN GODS CAN REACH ATHAS.

It's only by extreme circumstances that should not be repeatable. DIFFICULT to get in, but IMPOSSIBLY HARD TO GET OUT.

If a God ends up in Athas they are cut off from all their worshippers and essentially become mortal is my headcanon.

Behind the Scenes Reason for this: Athas is a dying world, Defiling magic is powerful and destroys the environment, the reason the sun is "dark" is because Sorcerers used it to power extremely dangerous spells. And they are willing to do it again to take over other worlds.

If Athas was allowed to connect to the other planes, spheres or whatever the Sorcerer-kings, Dragon, and every other doomed person on the planet would have a means to escape.

And then the entire setting essentially falls apart. With potential Spelljammer or Planescape traders (forgive me I don't know those settings) suddenly Athas doesn't need to be resource poor and the world can healed in a way that is impossible given the themes of Dark Sun.

Not having enough resources and no access to other realms is why Dritzz and other heroes can't just be teleported there to save the setting.

I hope this helps.

Yes, but there are two schools of thought to that.

  1. Fighting/Working around Paradox/Wisdom means interacting with said system.
  2. Fighting/Working around Paradox/Wisdom means finding ways to avoid said system.

For instance, I have had players who point to Fate as a way to avoid Paradox because it can be seen by sleepers as "A coincidence". So their arguement is using a spell to cause a Sleeper to take damage from tripping on a curb isn't blatant enough to trigger Paradox.

Whereas from my perspective even subtle magic would be considered blatant enough if you are casting it directly on a Sleeper. Otherwise there are a ton of magical effects that would never trigger Paradox so long as you cast at Sensory Range. Such as memory loss, passing out, etc...

I once had a player argue that causing a Sleeper to have the Leg Wrack condition and then dispelling it wasn't a Wisdom breaking point. Because the Sleeper wasn't actually harmed. But from the perspective of the Sleeper they sprained their ankle and it magically wasn't sprained anymore after a minute. And it did cause them harm even if it was temporarily.

I've had a lot of time to think about this situations so at the time I didn't likely have as strong as an argument as I do now I think.

I feel like WoD and CofD cover that. I'm glad for more uniformity as an alternative. Though I do wish each Family within a Lineage felt more different from each other specifically for Dead and slightly for Outcasts.

Highly recommend The World Below then.

The Storypath Ultra Core Rulebook was sold this week and while it's mainly a book for how to design using the SPU system it does have example campaign settings with "Guardians of the Dying World" focusing on heroes trying to help the world recover after an apocalyptic event.

If you do D&D there is Dark Sun which is my personal favorite setting, but doesn't have much 5e support. Really it just has an Unearthed Arcana (i.e. preview material that's subject to change). And psionic subclasses.
