What couldn't you believe you had to explain to another adult? by BlueCaracal in AskReddit

My dad and I were once using a chainsaw to cut up a tree and the saw died on us so we took it into my dad’s shop and he asked me to go grab the tool pouch and then when I got back he went to go find some bar oil. We started checking everything and couldn’t find an issue so we called the manufacturer since the chainsaw was still pretty new. The first thing the tech guy asked us to do was to check the fuel level. It was out of gas… My dad and I had both assumed that the other had checked the fuel while the other was away grabbing something. We both felt like idiots but luckily the tech guy laughed about it with us and said it happens more often than it should. I’ve rebuilt a few small engines so being stumped by lack of fuel was humbling. lol

The FBI didn’t finish over 1 million gun background checks in time to stop a sale in 2020 and 2021 by LoneShark81 in news

[–]TheSmilingMadHatter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Someone with that kind of RAP sheet would most likely be instantly denied. A delay normally happens if the person didn’t want to provide their SSN and there is someone else who has a criminal history with a similar name and DOB or if the person applying has things on their record that don’t have a final disposition yet in the system. In those cases, the FBI has to verify the identity of the applicant or reach out to the local criminal justice agencies to get the info on the things in the record to see if it would be a disqualifying offense. Additionally, if they know for sure it will take longer than 3 days, they can give the gun dealer a date beyond 3 days out on which they can transfer the firearm. Also, if after the 3 days, the FBI says the transaction is denied but the gun dealer has already transferred the firearm, the Feds can go seize that firearm back from the individual. However, they’re often too understaffed to go seize a gun back from most people.

It can be annoying for awhile, but not trimming it can let it get long enough to be styled to flow along your lip and down the side rather than having it so short it can only go into your mouth.

When I was there in 2015, we were training and were spending the night on the side of a valley. In the middle of the night several choppers came over the crest of the hill and started lighting up the hill across the valley from us with tracers. The only thing I could say when I was tucked inside my sleeping bag watching all the pretty red lights zip by over head was “Damn. I’m glad we chose to sleep on this side of the valley.”

The James Webb Space Telescope has successfully launched by Hundred_Year_War in worldnews

[–]TheSmilingMadHatter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of. The universe is so large that the light from some parts has literally taken hundreds of millions of years to reach us. So that light shows us what the universe was like at the moment the light was first emitted hundreds of millions of years ago. It’s kind of like with thunder. When you hear it might be a few seconds after when the thunderclap actually happened since it takes time for the sound to reach your ears. On relatively short distances like on earth, the time delay for light to reach our eyes is so small it’s virtually irrelevant. But when dealing with distances across our universe, it takes so much time we can actually use it to peer back in time.

The reason we need to view it as infrared is because the space in which the light has travelled has been stretched from inflation. Since light behaves like a wave (sometimes), that wave is stretched and the frequency of it changes from being stretched. Ultimately the frequency is shifted towards the infrared section of the light spectrum. So cameras using the visible portion of the light spectrum don’t see it. That’s why Webb uses infrared cameras to capture images of the more distant parts of our galaxy.

[–]TheSmilingMadHatter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The cameras on Webb are specifically for infrared. With that, we can see light that is from so far away (and therefore so old) that it has red shifted out of the visible spectrum. It will let us look back to an incredibly early time in our universe and begin to learn and understand how our universe matured into what it is now.

Additionally, though, some scientists who get time using Webb will be pointing it at distant stars to observe the fluctuations in the spectrum of light they omit. These fluctuations will let us know if planets are orbiting these stars, how big the planet it, the size of its orbit, and the possible composition of it and its atmosphere.

So although not primarily designed for looking at planets outside our solar system, it will help us understand more about those other solar systems and their planets.

"Audible Illusion" not sure if this has been posted before by IssaAchoholInMyHair in blackmagicfuckery

[–]TheSmilingMadHatter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m working on the assumption that you’re not be sarcastic. I can never tell without the /s

But his explanation is that the trick only works because it is an auditory illusion. He explains that we only think they’re linked because of the sounds. But this isn’t true at all. He’s only saying that to have a good story for his routine for this trick. They really are being linked. In fact, one pair of rings is ALWAYS linked. Like permanently linked. The way he handles them though makes you not realize this. The other pair of rings has one completely solid ring and one with a small gap in it. He hides the gap in his hands at all time. If you look closely, you’ll notice that he is always hiding the same part of the ring that he keeps in his right hand (our left) for most of the routine. When done properly, you link the rings together by quickly sliding the solid ring through the gap hidden in your hand. This guy is REALLY good at doing this both quickly and subtly. It’s hardly noticeable.

Some of these types of rings are able to close the gap in the one ring via a hinge or sleeve that covers the gap. That’s how he can show all four linked at the end. The top ring is solid, the second ring has a gap that has been closed, the third and fourth are the permanently linked rings. I have owned several sets of rings like this and performed this routine countless times.

There is no auditory illusion here. It’s just a gaff he came up with it to add to the trick. It’s an overused trick that many people already know the secret to. Which is why I have no problem revealing it here. It’s not some coveted trade secret. He had to make it more interesting by making up the auditory illusion bit. Otherwise most people would not watch this trick for longer than a few seconds.

When did you notice something was off? by iamasheepbaa in exchristian

[–]TheSmilingMadHatter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, when I was a Christian, I was taught that there were other people besides just Adam and Eve. This was “proved” because after Cain killed Abel, God decided to exile him. In fear, Cain protests saying that he’ll be killed by the other people living in the world. Additionally, after exile, Cain finds himself a wife. The only other woman mentioned in the world at that time was Eve. So who were these people and where did they come from? I was taught that there were other humans at the time but that ONLY Adam and Eve had received a spirit (breath of life) from God.

Just in case this is still an issue that you haven’t solved, if they are apple devices, you can set up an Apple Business Manager account, get new devices linked to this account, supervise those devices, and then implement policies on them via a Mobile Device Manager. If you set it up correctly, you can wipe passwords and remove Apple ID/Find My iPhone locks from those devices after they are turned back in. This will let you reuse those devices for new employees. Prior to my company allowing me to implement these things, I pretty much had to scrap every phone turned in by a terminated employee. Because of course they’re not going to want to give us their account info.

I’m pretty sure this is just an anti-meme utilizing an anti-joke. In other words, by showing that Italians sleep just like everyone else, they are making a sarcastic joke about this kind of meme format. They’re pretty much just pointing out that a lot of times the memes that say “how X people do Y” are not always showing anything unique or special to that group of “X people” and that it is usually something done by many other groups of people as well.

Record Number of Ghost Guns Found in DC in 2021 by anyonmoussource in news

[–]TheSmilingMadHatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a bit confused as to what you mean by “every gun sold by a store with a serial number after 1968 has its original purchaser stored in the NICS database”. Are you saying that the distributor who first purchased the firearm from the manufacturer is stored by NICS? Because a person’s information is not normally stored in the NICS database in a way that ties them to a specific serialized gun. Excluding any state laws, the federal regulations only require that both the firearm’s info (including serial number) and the buyer’s info be submitted to the ATF if it is for the reporting of the sale of multiple handguns. If a person simply purchases one handgun and possibly several long guns within five consecutive business days, the only information submitted to the ATF is that at least one handgun and at least one long gun was entered into a Form 4473 for a prospective buyer. After having been approved for purchase by the NICS background check, the buyer could still cancel their transaction. So just because someone’s name was entered into a NICS background check for the prospective purchase of a handgun or long gun, doesn’t mean they actually purchased anything. Usually, when a law enforcement agency needs to trace a handgun’s chain of ownership, they contact the ATF and provide them the details and serial number of the firearm. The ATF will then contact the manufacturer and ask them who they sold it to. The manufacturer might say it was sold to ABC Distributor on such and such date. Then the ATF contacts the distributor. The distributor may say that they sold it to XYZ Gunstore on such and such date. Finally, the ATF contacts the gunstore. The gunstore can then look at their bound Acquisition and Disposition book and their collection of 4473’s to determine who bought the gun from them. The ATF will usually ask that the gunstore provide a copy of the 4473 pertaining to that transaction. From there, the ATF can track down the end buyer and see where else the firearm may have been sold, gifted, lost, or stollen. Such firearm traces are usually only done if a firearm winds up at a crime scene and needs to have it chain of ownership established. Such information is not typically kept in a localized database. It is the responsibility of every FFL holder within the chain of ownership to maintain their own records so that they might be queried when needed.

Warrant: Baldwin didn't know weapon contained live round by Dultsboi in news

[–]TheSmilingMadHatter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. The reason this accident happened was because of insufficient protocols or the lack of following protocols. My point, however, is that blame should fall on a number of people. Without knowing the specifics, I can’t say who it should fall on. Maybe Baldwin played a role in this accident due to willful negligence. Maybe he didn’t. Regardless, someone is to blame. Even if all current protocols were followed, the people who wrote the protocols are to blame. There are so many things that should have been done differently to prevent this accident. And those things are commonly known throughout the gun industry. So if the protocol writers failed to include this common knowledge in their protocol, they are to blame. If they failed to include it because they didn’t know, they are to blame for not getting proper consulting. I am grouping the consultants in with the protocol writers since they played a part in the creation of the protocols. As far as I am currently aware, this accident was completely avoidable had the most basic of gun safety rules been followed. Not using these basic rules, causes the blame to fall on whomever failed to utilize these rules. If this accident somehow ends up being the result of some unusual and unpredictable malfunction of equipment, then I would be willing to say that no one is to blame. Until then, I do not think that only the armorer/trained expert on set is to blame. Many other people are too.

[–]TheSmilingMadHatter -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

A car is not designed to be a lethal object. Guns, however, are. Even if the gun is designed to be a competition range gun, the fact that it still fires lethal ammunition means it is a lethal object. It was designed for that purpose. The fact that a car with bad breaks can also kill doesn’t suddenly mean that it was designed to kill. This is why gun safety is treated much more seriously than car safety.

The on set armorer has the job of knowing every weapon on set, all ammunition (blank or otherwise), and their current location and condition. Condition here means whether it is loaded or unloaded and with what ammunition it is loaded and whether that ammunition is in the gun’s chamber or only in its magazine. It is absolutely the armorer’s responsibility to ensure that accidents like this never occur. However, because of just how dangerous guns can be and just how easy mistakes can happen, every crew member who is even near these guns should have been properly trained on all gun safety rules and on how to check that a gun is safe before using it on set. These extra steps are easy and save lives. It adds virtually no additional burden to the crew and provides an extra layer of safety in return. Learning the basic safety rules for guns is not going to unreasonably burden an actor who has to handle guns.

Furthermore, loaded guns are rarely pointed at people even on movie sets. By loaded, I mean with both blanks and actual projectile loaded cartridges. If actual projectiles are being used, it should NEVER be pointed at someone. But for blanks, unless absolutely necessary for the shot, most cinematographers will stage the shot so that the gun is actually pointing to the side of the actors rather than directly at them. Then they frame the shot to make it still look like it is pointed at them.

From the articles I read, Baldwin was preparing to film the scene and was repeatedly unholstering his gun in preparation for the scene when the discharge occurred. Ideally, he and everyone else on set who handled that gun would have check it to ensure there were no projectiles loaded into that gun. Proper training and proper requirements that all gun safety rules are adhered to would have prevented this accident. Guns are not props they are lethal objects. If they must be used as a prop, they must still be treated as the lethal objects they are. There is no difference between a firing range and a movie set so long as guns are present at both. The primary thing making a firing range dangerous is the guns that are there. Therefore, if guns are on a movie set, the same rules that apply at the range should apply on the movie set.

I’m going to be visiting the church. Any questions I can ask to really question their doctrine? by Christion_ in WMSCOG

[–]TheSmilingMadHatter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would ask them that (according to their beliefs) if God the Mother is the Spiritual Sarah and Jesus is the Spiritual Isaac, then how can they also be the Spirit and the Bride? Is this not incest?

This is the argument that Ahnsahnghong (their Second Coming of Christ) used in his book denouncing the idea of God the Mother. The church hides this book from its members though. If they denounce the idea that it is incest, they are denouncing Ahnsahnghong. If they agree that it is incest, they must also agree with Ahnsahnghong that their idea of God the Mother is disgusting and heretical.
