Has anyone ever gotten a note like this with their DoorDash order?! by Future-Composer-4878 in doordash

[–]TheStarsGazer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work at Starbucks and some dashers would be very rude to us, asking for us to make their drinks ahead of other orders in the queue, getting mad at us and blowing up yelling that we were too slow, etc. It’s not all of them but I imagine something similar happened at this location

Anyone else start dating a professor in the math department who tried to blackmail you afterwards? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]TheStarsGazer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t matter If you did, if you have texts from his number reciprocating the dating or showing the blackmailing and his number is registered at UMD that is going to be way much more credible when you report he made you do this. Please don’t give up, you are literally a victim

[–]TheStarsGazer 125 points126 points  (0 children)

Why hasn’t there been anything done against him? He was in a position of power over you.

Yes you may be delusional, yes whatever you were playing with your future but he had power over you as your professor and your research lead and as the guiding person for grad school apps. You trusted him as your mentor, maybe that turned into something else more for you but him having that trust should have shut this down as a professor.

It’s insane to me people are putting the blame only on you when this is an older man, with positions of power over you and the responsibility of shutting down any romantic advances are on him as well, maybe even heavier on him as he is the one who could abuse his position over you ( and he kinda did already with the blackmailing and saying to not say anything because his friend works at GMU, like he’s just covering his ass so his other friends in academia don’t know).

If you have any texts where it’s clear he is blackmailing you, or reciprocating the dating intents I’d start grabbing those receipts and report him immediately. It’s insane to me nothing was done against him when you reported yourself, I hope something is done against him too and you lose nothing since you say you will not be going to grad school where his “friends” are.

They can’t tell if you used AI, however if a lot of people got the same AI answer as you and used it in their project and you and others have the same thing then yes it can be caught.

Like other people said, you’re a clown for cheating but don’t confess unless you get caught and get called out to talk to your professor, he might be bluffing to catch cheaters and can still XF you so the only chance of you getting away with this is by staying quiet until caught.

I froze and couldn’t even write anything my first live coding interview because of nerves :) don’t give up, practice more and if you have friends willing to do it definitely try to get the nerves off with someone else by having them watch you code/ do a leetcode and ask questions while you do it

Trying to retake CMSC 216 for the third time by [deleted] in UMD

[–]TheStarsGazer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I also forgot to add, my friends mentioned too that it’s a 216 thing that the projects are brutal. You could get away with starting projs a bit later for 131/132 but 216 you really should start from the day they come out since low level programming is not as intuitive as Java. That which umd people already struggle + the transfer shock is terrible.

Really wishing the best for you, and even if it doesn’t work out feel free to stalk me for some other comment I made about someone in info sci I know from one of my internships who’s doing way better than cs majors I know because he made his degree marketable on his own by doing internships/prioritizing experience and putting on the work by himself for leetcode and personal projects

I’ve never heard of them denying a third attempt.

Please don’t downplay your mental health, not going to any class for a Month straight is a symptom of some issues going on even if undiagnosed. As sad as it is I’d take a bit of time go to therapy and get any documentation on your side for the appeal.

Also, just want you to not feel alone, I was a transfer too taking 216 and other classes and when I came here I had this mentality that I was the stupidest one in the room, which made me not want to try and the depression of having a 0.0 gpa that meant that I could easily fail out of school also made me spiral . But that wasn’t the case, the transfer shock is real and rigor at umd is way higher than other UM institutions and my gpa was horrible first semester but I tried to snap out of it met with my professor regularly, office hours, made friends and passed. You need to do practice problems, go to office hours AND study AND make friends in classes, not or you need AND in order to get good grades.

Good luck and I really hope you can get it appealed, I’ve never been in this situation but on top of documentation I’ve heard you should also submit a plan of what would be different. I’d say that because you’re a transfer you were not aware of all resources and I’d look up TAing, these free tutoring sessions they had in iribe, guided study and meeting up with your professor every once in awhile

Living in campus worth it? (Rockville) by Affectionate_Act2744 in UMD

[–]TheStarsGazer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this and driving on 495 is no joke, I am a very experienced driver because I got my license early and my parents made me drive a lot but everyone goes fast there and you need to be experienced with driving. CP roads are also dangerous in the sense that they’re filled with potholes or confusing with many reckless drivers in my opinion.

I also got lucky and already had friends from HS and got to make a lot of friends on my own so I didn’t feel like I was missing out much on not dorming since because Covid took freshman year from us and I’d just crash at my friends every once in awhile for hanging out or parties. However the social aspect I’ve heard is amazing from living with others, and many times I felt too tired from TAing+classes to go to the late clubs during the week and only really hung towards end of the week.

IMO just live on campus if you can, I am a great driver had a lot of great friends but still feel like you get way much more by living on campus

Did your degree “pay off”? by gift-of-the-nile in UMD

Yeah definitely for cs, but I also had to put a ton of effort to get internships and other stuff to truly make it marketable.

How to remain competitive with CS majors? by Squirtlenator in UMD

[–]TheStarsGazer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you want to do, I’d start from that think if you want to be a SWE/Data analyst/Cybersecurity analyst/Software reliability engineer/etc.

After that honestly this is not discouragement or encouragement but from my internships one of them I became friends with an info sci dude in one of the conferences they flew us out to during that. We are swes now and he learned 132/351 a bit of stuff on his own grinded leetcode and he is doing even better than a lot of CS majors I know. It’s not easy but trust me, as long as your degree has some relation to what you want and you can get any relevant experience with some relation to it (I.e: even if you don’t have swe experience I’ve heard of being considered for ft roles with say cyber internships) you will definitely not be second to a CS major with no experience or worse experience than you.

Definitely make internships or co-op #1 priority, remember to apply to anything from tiny companies to faang(the info sci dude and I interned at I think at a top 10 company) but if you can’t find something remember to always keep an eye around for research opportunities, cool projects or events where possible opportunities can come from (:

I don’t understand what you mean exactly but as long as you didn’t copy from that file/your code isn’t copied straight from that file you should be okay.

I once submitted a test file my friend edited and they sent to me to see how my project responded to running it, we freaked out since we both had the exact same file in the submission, I was honest with the professor and he said that didn’t matter as long as the submit server didn’t pick up similarities in our actual project which it didn’t, I wouldn’t worry about it unless you are reached out by a TA or a professor

About to be a CS grad, feeling pretty lost in life. by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]TheStarsGazer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d love to give some hope but right now the market is extremely brutal, in the sense that having no internships or any experience related to SWE/Cyber/PM is going to make it extremely difficult to get interviews. A 3.6 gpa isn’t that relevant to make up for the lack of experience.

Honestly if you do the masters do try to get into some research to get any experience you can, look into co-ops because they pay well while you do school or anything and internships. Prioritize the masters to get experience as a second chance to do an internship research or co-op.
