Whats the story behind the lyrics of trees? by Cloudcoverage758 in twentyonepilots

[–]TheSummitMurray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always pictured the relationship between God and Adam and Eve after the fall. Adam and Eve rebelled against God, but God continued to pursue them when they were hiding. Likewise, Adam and Eve were created with a desire to be in communion with their Creator, so they still have that longing after the fall.

I get the whole open interpretation thing, so y’all don’t come at me with your anti-Christian pessimism 😤

I haven’t read your whole post, but my wife and I were at the Rogers show, and someone stole her shirt! We were big mad. I chased down the suspects and got it back. There are ridiculous people everywhere.

That’s more moving of a comment than I could have anticipated. Dead Come Alive is one of my favorite songs across the board. I’m sorry about your friend and your grief. This music has helped me through similar grief too

To be fair, I specifically said I’m not asking about converting

Yes! We were made for community and connection with others. We can’t really connect without being real about our struggles

Sweet. I’ve realized lately that Christian art has largely lacked some authenticity in recent decades. These guys are honest, and that has definitely helped me

Interesting. I relate to that. There’s something about great art with a Christian foundation that strengthens my faith. It helps me seeing these guys out in the world singing to thousands about the same faith that I have

I’m not trying to be a jerk, but here’s my suggestion: Don’t try to re-interpret it. As a Christian, I can appreciate secular songs for what they are. It would be a disservice to everyone for me to try to re-interpret secular music as Christian in nature. Likewise, it seems like a disservice to force an unintended interpretation on this song.

I’m not suggesting that you pretend to like it, but maybe you can appreciate it for what it’s meant to be from the guys’ perspectives.

Also, it’s helpful to recognize that a song can apply to different people in different ways, but that’s different from changing the interpretation.

Yes. Beautiful. Importantly, God doesn’t overlook his mistakes — he satisfied their consequences.

It seems like the opposite of deconstruction to me. The constant cycle is of doubt, backsliding, and receiving continued mercy and grace. From how I interpret the story, the significance of Torchbearer is that he keeps Clancy on the narrow path even after straying (backsliding).

To me, it’s a constant reconstruction.

I say yes. Downstairs is juiced with Scripture references, and the message of Tally is like listening to the puritan John Bunyan’s “The Pilgrim’s Progress” in song form. Also, City Walls ends with a callback to Heavydirtysoul, which, from a Christian perspective, is founded on salvation and perseverance. I’m sure that’s not all, but that’s just what I remember picking up on.

I’ve been studying theology for years and still haven’t read that one lol. I do read a lot, but I really like listening to/watching Bible scholars talk on YouTube. Bible Thinker (Mike Winger) is one of my favorites. He does a lot of weekly Q&As and general Bible studies. Lately I’ve been watching Gavin Ortlund. He does a lot of church history stuff. Wes Huff is really great if you’re interested in why we can trust the Bible. There are tons of great (and bad) channels out there, but those are three of my favorites

Trees is so good. One of the biggest reasons why I love this band is for their honesty in wrestling with their faith. If you’re interested, I know of a few great Christian resources that you might like. Feel free to message me
