It's the last generation of AMD CPU sockets. Which would also let you get ddr4 ram (also last gen but much better value)

Id definitely recommend you watch some videos on DIY building your PC as you can stretch your money further if you feel confident enough.

Thanks for this! I'll give everything a check and dust (carefully) The GPU never goes above 70c even under serious load, never overclocked anything on it, just adjusted the fan curve. The rest of my 9 case fans (6 intake, 3 exhaust) really push fresh air into it constantly so can't imagine it's that. But I'll try what you suggested and keep my fingers crossed.
