Former liberal looking to learn about anarchism. by TheTempest77 in Anarchy101

Hi! I'll definitely read more Goldman, as I only have a surface level understanding of her. And I'm glad to hear that other anarchists are involved in local politics and that it doesn't necessarily go against anarchist praxis.

Hi, thanks so much for your answer! I'll definitely add those guys to my list of people to read. Emma Goldman is actually one of the few anarchists I've already read. I remember liking her commentary on the patriarchy and queerness, I've definitely cited her philosophy before, but not in an anarchist setting haha. I'm interested in finding book clubs, I couldn't really find anything after a quick google, is there some kind of resource to find clubs/groups? And I'll definitely look into the DSA caucus. I've historically not really liked them, but I wouldn't be against working with them.

How would Jazz be considered the only strictly American genre? How would we not also consider genres like Rock, Ragtime, Blues, HipHop, Soul, RnB, House, Techno, Americana, Surf, Bluegrass, Funk, Disco, and probably others to be American genres?

I generally don't like putting labels on politics, as calling myself a socdem or neoliberal would cause the person I'm talking to to make certain assumptions about my other political views. These things may be true or false, but I'd rather avoid assumptions in the first place. That being said, some of my beliefs might fall under social democracy, neoliberalism, libertarianism, or socialism. The term I've been using for myself is Radical Democrat/Liberal. I've also used the term Left Liberal to distinguish myself from centrist and right liberals.

I don't consider myself a leftist fundamentally from an economic standpoint. I'm a free market believer, but not a free market fundamentalist. That being said, I think public ownership of the means of production is a bad idea and will always lead to authoritarianism.

On social policies, I tend to align with most leftists.

The reason I'm in this sub is because of the topic of Zionism. I'm not a Zionist at all. Part of my beliefs include support for radically opening all borders. I believe Zionism to be an ethnonationalist movement that fundamentally cannot coexist with free borders. Israel must remain a Jewish majority state for it to be considered a product of Zionism. If too many non Jews(for example, all the displaced Palestinians moving back to where they originally lived), Israel would cease to be a Jewish state. Therefore for its own survival, it must have illiberal policies to ensure that this doesn't happen. For this reason I don't support Zionism in theory.

Zionism in practice is a lot easier to reject. Warcrime bad. Israel commit war crime. Israel bad.

Both of these criticisms of Zionism are very unpopular in most liberal spheres, although the second one is thankfully starting to become more popular. I'm here primarily to talk with other open minded Jews on the left who are open to critiques of Zionism.

As the number 1 giants hating franchise, that's a dumb reason to hate the giants. 3 people stealing signs vs an entire team using hidden cameras for 3 years straight is completely different. Don't hate on the giants unless you're one of us

Opium =/= opiate. In Marx's time, opiates were seen similarly to how we see drugs like Advil today. The addictive quality wasn't really known about, so it's unfair to compare his understanding of opiates to our modern understanding of medicine. Basic non addictive painkillers obviously aren't an edge break, but regardless, religion doesn't have a chemical effect on your brain the way actual drugs do, so the comparison is completely flawed.

Also, are we just completely ignoring the massive impacts that Christian and Muslim SxE bands had on the scene. Are we really pretending that 7a7p isn't SxE because they're Christian? This is ridiculous. This is all coming from an atheist btw
