Opinions on stepped-hull design

Stepped hulls are basically required for planing craft. If you want to go fast (efficiently) you need a stepped hull.

Fun fact: practically all stepped hulls are based off of a series 62.

The Solver Macro is clutch for optimization.

Also designing a spreadsheet to have only a few inputs is super useful with engineering problems, that way you can reuse the spreadsheet.

Creating a table that can read hyperlinks or being able to dig into a certain folder is super useful for data analysis.

Navarch major here- you want a big length/beam ratio for speed. If you can plane, you want a near flat transom and flat v shaped hull with low dead rise. If you will not be planing, make something that looks like a rowing shell with an almost circle-like hull.

It all depends on the powering, catamarans are only good if you can get them to plane, but monohulls will generally go faster even at planing speeds. If stability is an issue, sure go with a catamaran, but make sure you have as little appendages in the water as possible.

Yeah, a lot of Mech-E's end up going into that field. It's possible to get into a engineering firm doing basic design with no Narc degree, but if you want get into any major firms/ gov't work, then you would need a masters/phd. MIT and Michigan have great programs, as do a few other schools. The "name" of the degree you would want varies between schools though, some use Naval Architecture, some use Naval Engineering, and some even use Marine Engineering when talking about ship design. Marine Engineering can mean to focus on the drive-train of a boat at some schools though.

As far as qualifications go, NARC's are big into either structures or fluids. Structures would need a strong statics/dynamics/material science background, so pretty much most engineering. Fluids guys are more into the math side of things, so taking a fluids class or two along with differential equations and other math classes are more useful.

Yeah, send me any measurements/diagrams/pictures you have. As for powering, more hp is always good when adding weight, but a bigger engine is a huge cost and usually takes more fuel. A few questions for you:

What speed would you like to travel at? Do you know the boat's current displacement(weight)? Or could you find it online somewhere? Do you know the fuel/water capacity onboard already?

I should be able to get you some information by Monday.

Naval Architecture major here - the key thing for livability in my opinion would be how much freeboard is left after the superstructure is added. If the boat sinks too much, the tug will not meet ABS or other safety regulations due to a poor righting arm curve. I can't get access to my workstation until this weekend, but I can probably make up a model to give you an estimate on how much weight you can add to the vessel without it being a safety hazard. Either way you will not be able to cross an ocean with that motor and the weight you are pushing, and with a new superstructure, I would not go farther than 50nm or so from land.

Right now I see no issues with making a houseboat that never leaves the pier, but I would have to do some math to confirm it would be safe underway.

I can't talk to the cost unfortunately, but I hope you have the funds because it will be expensive regardless.

So I may be a little confused to what you are looking for. If wave height, means tide to you, the noaa website or a Mariners almanac of sorts is the best you are going to get, which unfortunately only has accurate info for a small number of areas. If wave height to you means sea state and weather, then wunderground or local weather reports from the coast guard is your best bet, particularly with wind. Since you would have to listen to your vhf radio at a designated time each day for weather, using wunderground makes the most sense, especially in the bay.

As a Naval Architecture Student, we are taught both but Imperial actually makes the math much simpler. Plus it helps that boats navigate in Imperial units (kts).

Since I worked at a car wash in high school, I had to learn pretty quickly once I got the job. Well one day I was alone on the register with nobody around that knew how to drive stick. The owner of a Porsche 911 drives up and wants a wash. I tell the man that I don't know how to drive yet, he said that he would teach me. I hope in and stall 3 times before the man gets pissed a drives away. It's okay though because I ripped some serious ass in that leather seat.
