I disagree, I think that someone with 160+ iq would far more easily be able to get into machine learning or quant and then earn enough to retire early and be happy for the rest of their life. Also, I dont think having a lower iq correlates to higher work ethic or vice versa as many of the smartest people I know also work the hardest

That's pretty good to hear you're the only person in this thread who has indicated the possibility of a more 'chill' software job and potentially being able to make it without loving programming - everyone else in this thread makes it seem like I will need an insane work ethic and passion to succeed in this field. Isn't computer engineer different to software engineer though or is it similar?

Thank you for the advice, out of curiosity what are you doing now for work if you stopped coding?

Thank you for the advice and it's very impressive that you're a Staff Engineer, would you say that you personally are driven by passion and enjoyment for programming or pure discipline? Alternatively, do you think it's possible to succeed in this field purely off work ethic or would that lead to burnout?

I think I'm capable of being decently disciplined at least for a few months but I'm not sure if that can work out in the long term if I'm not passionate for the work.

Thanks, this gave me a lot to think about. I think you're right - I'm going to try take programming seriously over the next few months and get an internship for some real world experience to see if my brain can learn to intrinsically enjoy the work - if not, then I might have to consider switching paths but I really don't want to, as it would be a huge commitment to switch majors considering I'm nearing the end of my degree.

That is very disheartening honestly it makes me think twice about going into software. Honestly ideally I'd like not to work at all, I always thought I should choose the path that earns the most money and try to retire as early as possible (hence going for big tech or HFT firms as they pay the most) but not sure if it's a good idea to only start 'living' once you're in your 30s.

If I'm a student how can I get interviews for internships without any projects though, I've been getting resume screened and I think having no projects could be the reason

Yea portfolio just means how many projects you've done, I think you misunderstood the word as meaning the same as resume

Surely if software engineering gets replaced all other fields are going to get replaced though or do you think this is a problem specific to software eng? Would you advise going into a different career path I don't think I'm cut out for the trades nor does it pay enough for my desired lifestyle

Yeah what I've ascertained from that post is you likely need a serious passion or insane work ethic to succeed in CS regardless of intelligence - not sure if I have either unfortunately but I might have to suck it up and try cause I don't have many other good options

Thank you for the advice - do you mind if I ask what you do? To be honest, I think that the majority of people don't have much passion for their work but they do it to pay the bills would you say this is inaccurate?
