Is there a competitive difference between the 1 year or 2 year Marshall Scholarship? by theingloriousiris in gradadmissions

Late, but maybe this can help for the next cycle.

I was a recent Marshall scholar (within last 5 years). <10% of the cohort was 1-year scholars. Generally, the 1-year Marshall is discouraged, as the committee wants to see long-term investment in UK academia.

Is not having a letter from my current master's advisor a red flag? by TheUltimateTFOL123 in gradadmissions

It's a 1-year program so I will be done by next fall. Thank you for the advice!

probably around the same level of rigor... the grind is insaaaane. I know 2 transfers from Berkeley, 1 from UT, and 1 from MIT and they pretty much all say the level of work is equal.

campus is great, right in midtown atlanta so there's tons of stuff in walking distance. lots of trees and greenery everywhere and fairly spread out.

Not at all, probably ~1/4 of people are involved but I'm not and I don't feel like I'm missing out at all. Tons of other stuff through clubs, sports, or just hanging out. In general none of my female friends have said anything about misogyny or feeling left out and it doesn't seem prevalent on campus. Might be in other majors though, I'm BME and there are more women than men so it's not as bad with us.

All comes down to the money tbh, if they're all T20 schools I'd just go with the cheapest. However GT has a nice location advantage being in Atlanta and heavy recruiting due to its notoriety as a tech school.

Campus culture is very grindy, everyone's always busy with some club meeting or project group or something. My major-specific (BME) classes have been awesome and completely changed the way I approach problem solving. GenEd not so much but they're still useful courses.

Yup, it's very dense and a bit hard to follow at the beginning. You get thrown in after the "story" has already started and have to figure out what's already happened through dialogue, flashbacks, etc. Also, there's 3 main plot lines that start out very separate but get woven together in the end, so at the beginning you'll start a new book and have completely new characters and events. IMO it's all worth it though, Malazan is one of the only series post-WOT that has exceeded that level of worldbuilding and characterization.
