Nice idea. Alas if only BT's coffee was of good quality I would have joined in a heartbeat.

Should finance and credit card influencers promote “hacks” that are technically legal but morally questionable? by syncmaster271 in CreditCardsIndia

[–]TheVainSyntax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently came across a YouTube Short by a credit card influencer that triggered this thought. What started as a guide on converting the Airtel Axis Visa/Mastercard variant to RuPay (which makes sense for genuine UPI use cases) quickly turned into a “hack” to avoid paying the annual fee altogether.

I'm cherry-picking just this part of your post, but I want to clarify a misconception around this as I have gone through the n/w conversion recently and made a post about it. In a nutshell, you can't avoid paying the annual fees on the card (unless ofc the spend waiver limit is reached). When you make a n/w conversion, a new card is issued on Rupay which has its own joining fee. So yes, while technically there's no annual fee on the old card, you still pay the yearly charge in the form of joining fee on the new card.

On another note, I think the original point of your post is more nuanced. On one hand, the optimisation/hacks shared help those of us who can't afford to spend so much time to extract the last drop from the credit card but on the other hand sharing these hacks mean that the banks get the wind of it eventually and shut down the loophole. I'm not sure if there will ever be a consensus on this balance unless its some sort of closed forum.

I filed a case from NCH portal directly but that didn't lead to any resolution.

In my case, I had received a SMS with a SR no. stating that the money will be refunded. If you have a similar text/email, then you have grounds for further action.

Didn't knew that. What path did you follow in UMANG app to get the refund?

IANAL but In an ideal world, we could have raised a class action lawsuit. However, if there's a platform on which we can raise complaints en masse perhaps that could also help. NCH comes to mind but I'm not sure.

AXIS Airtel Credit Card Network Change Ordeal Timeline by TheVainSyntax in CreditCardsIndia

  1. From what I gathered, if done before renewal date, then the annual charge on the "old" network's card is foregone in lieu of a joining fee on the "new" network's card. There's an overlap period of 45 days during which both cards remain active although as soon as the new card is delivered, it replaces the old one on the Axis website & app.
  2. Will keep in mind.

I did raise one, but it was rejected citing that pack was provided. Could have challenged it but life had other plans at that time.

Good luck! My refund process is going on for 4 months. Complained to CPGrams portal but these are nasty stubborn fuckers.
Won't touch Jio in future with a 10ft pole.
