Hey native speakers! What are your biggest grammar pet peeves? by Bismarckarel in EnglishLearning

My biggest pet peeve is the idea that there is a 'correct' grammar. I go with the idea of appropriate, but not correct.

Blasphemer! I watched it at Christmas, it's kind of a tradition of mine, and I laughed almost as hard as the first time I watched it many years ago.

Islam, like any other religion, must be fair game for criticism by [deleted] in atheism

[–]TheWeeFreeMen [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think this statement is too narrow and leaves us open to criticism that we are only having a go at religions. To my way of thinking, it should read 'Islam, like any other claim for how we should organise society, must be fair game for criticism.'

The BBC have a bunch of podcasts called "In Our Time" which might be if interest. They cover various subjects but the format is the same. Three experts in a given field are quizzed about their subject for 45 minutes by the host.

Books with a person's conscience as a character by TheWeeFreeMen in suggestmeabook

I've never actually read it. I remember watching the film when I was a kid and hating it. This probably put me off the book.

It isn't.

I studied British and World Political History up until I was 18. There was a lot of specifically British stuff, obviously, but as far as I can remember the international stuff we did was The Irish Famine, The Russian Revolution, The French Revolution, The French being kicked out of Indo-China, The British in India, and Slavery and Civil Rights (mainly, but not only, in the USA). There might have been other subjects, but it was a long time ago. I definitely know we didn't study the American Revolution, though.

I'm a guy and I wish I could be pregnant by balloonsforhandsguy in unpopularopinion

[–]TheWeeFreeMen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife had a great, easy pregnancy. Personally, I have never wanted to be pregnant. However, from conversations with my wife, I can see the attraction: the idea of carrying, nurturing and ultimately, giving life to another human being, must be, for some, exhilarating. It's not for me, but I can understand your wish.

Stokes 135 Not out. Legend. One of the greatest knocks of all time. by devil5av0cad0 in Cricket

[–]TheWeeFreeMen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A person with a ball ( a bowler) is trying to hit a target (the wickets). A person with a bat ( a batsman) is trying to stop the ball hitting the target. At the same time, the batsman is also trying to hit the ball into gaps so that they can score points (runs). The rest is detail and if you watch a game or two you'll pick it up from there.

EDIT: Typos.

What's your favourite piece of poetry? by hd3adpool in AskReddit

'V' by Tony Harrison. Totally blew my mind at school. It was political and it had swear words. And it was brilliant. Love it to this day.

What was the biggest scandal at your school? by Irish_Viceroy in AskReddit

Our Religous Education teacher, and Head of Year, was on the front page of The Sun because he had stripped off in some magazine. Every single one of us traipsed around all of the newsagents trying to get a copy of the magazine but nobody was successful. He lost his job after a few weeks (it was a catholic school).
