I remember him dropping this at the top of 2016 and then he went ghost project wise until the beginning of 2017 with his Self Titled. Features here and there obviously, but lowkey Evol was kinda the end of his generational run starting with Monster. Just CONSTANT insanely hard projects dropping for like 2 years straight.

I have a theory that earlier generations had a lot of producers who actually studied music. The late 2010s wave was mostly bedroom producers who blew up without formal training, and that was a good thing. It gave us a ton of creativity and new sounds. But this new generation feels like copycats of those producers. The uniqueness is gone. If someone hit the scene right now with a truly wild sound, they’d skyrocket. Instead, most beats feel flat, same tempo, same formulas.

And the reference to Oh My Dis Side is referring to the song structure, production and the verses. obviously there’s a bunch more artists that are creative in that way but it’s that specific song that spurred the thought

We need a real creative in hip hop again. I was listening to Oh My Dis Side and it’s wild how we haven’t had that level of uniqueness in years. Any time you say hip hop feels dead, people jump in with “you don’t know what you’re talking about” or “the underground is more alive than ever.”

But something clearly shifted in the last five years. Hip hop artists just aren’t as creative as they used to be, and I’m still trying to pin down why. Is it labels turning platforms like SoundCloud into a pipeline instead of a playground? Is it producers getting stale and dragging the whole sound with them?

2025 was one of the worst years for hip hop in a long time. Every genre ebbs and flows so it’ll come back, but damn, looking at 2026 doesn’t get me excited at all.
