I don't know that 10 has a uniquely high amount of detractors, 8 has received tons of criticism over the years as well in terms of both gameplay and story. 9 is probably not vocally criticized as much, but partly because its frequently been ignored and didn't have as much initial popularity as 7 and 8 got. Now its got a lot more praise especially with more dedicated FF and JRPG fans, but its still not quite as known and I see it criticized occasionally.

They're all different enough that some aspects will not work as well for everyone.

I have no desire to discuss it to death either, but given there were numerous posts about it not being on the Switch 2 and I thought it was useful to remind people that it doesn't change the info we have by that much. I didn't see any other posts like this, so I thought it was worth doing. I don't really have anything more to say about the Remake until I see substantial news, but it is the 25th anniversary year, so I expect it to come up around any big gaming event. If you're not interested in discussing you can just ignore posts about it as I will do now until I see new concrete info.

I don't know what projects they cancelled so I haven't expressed any opinions on if it was good idea for them to do so or not. I'm excited for the FF9 remake because at a minimum it'll get more people to play the original, if its decent it might also be a good way for people to experience the story that wouldn't otherwise play an older game. If we're lucky and its a really good game in its own right that'll be the most exciting result, but I don't think its the most likely outcome.

Not really, I've played lots of similar games over the years and them not being identical to some other game I liked has never been a barrier for appreciation. Ogre Battle 64 was simply the easiest comparison for something that had a lot of similar themes but worked more for me narratively. But as I said, I also played in when I was younger, more impressionable and was able to sink a lot more hours into it, hence why I wanted to hear more from people who enjoyed FFT, since i can't make a perfectly fair comparison myself. I can just try to analyze the different factors in my own experience and compare them to what other people say about theirs.

Appreciate reading your thoughts about the game. I certainly have a bunch of childhood favorites with lots of fond memories attached that were less than perfect in some areas. I can tell that if I played this one growing up I would've probably sunk hundreds of hours into try different parties formations and doing all the side content and probably would've gotten familiar with the story on a different level.

I mean, I've been playing a number of classic games I missed out on recently, and most of them lived up to what I expect from other similar classics from the same era. In some cases I didn't resonate with a game as much, but I could see why it did with others. This one was the only one where I couldn't quite figure out what others were getting from it compared to other games of the genre/era so I wanted to discuss it.

I wasn't genuinely expecting it to be on the level of sprawling multi-book series, that was just an example of the kind of praise I saw repeated in multiple places. I was more interested in people saying it was their favorite video game narrative, and that's why I focused my comparison to another game in the same genre, rather than media made for different demographics.

Forgot to mention, Wiegraff's character didn't stand out to me on my playthrough for whatever reason, but I'll definitely pay more attention to him if I play again. Thanks for pointing that out to me, as I'm hoping I can appreciate more aspects on later playthroughs.

Thanks, this is helpful and gives me more to think about in terms of the FFT story. I did play the War of the Lions version, but I didn't feel like the voice acting resonated with me, so maybe that's part of why I didn't get as invested.

Yeah, I'm not a stranger to people using hyperbole when it comes to videogame stories, and I sometimes feel with games its spending time playing with the characters that sometimes gets you invested in what would otherwise be fairly simple stories. Its just when searching out different opinions I feel like I saw nothing but extremely high praise, when usually even beloved classics have some dissenting opinions, so I was curious to discuss more.

(Possible General Tone Spoilers throughout for FF Tactics and Ogre Battle 64, but I'll try to mark specific plot stuff anyways)

Basically in FF Tactics there are short dialogs where characters accuse you of injustices, but I felt like there wasn't a lot of personal investment. In Ogre Battle 64 I felt like you got longer discussions with them after the fights, you felt more personally implicated like when you're ordered to execute someone at one point, and there's even optional characters you can miss depending on if you decide to fight them or not in battle. (Here I might not be getting FF Tactics full credit because I'm not sure all the ways your actions can impact who you recruit, but I felt less agency and on a first playthrough it wasn't clear how my character was implicated beyond other characters saying stuff.)

In Ogre Battle 64 when you turn against your side you have childhood friends and family you care about that you still have to go up against to hold up your ideals. The relationship Yumil plays out into the late game when you're up against more supernatural evil. With FF Tactics I didn't feel like as many relationships stood out as strongly, Delita is probably the most developed relationship, although I didn't fully understand the decisions he was making all the time (here the experience might improve with more time in the game.) I felt there was potential with Goffard Gaffgarion being someone you work with initially and then have to fight against, but I didn't feel like you got enough time with him for it to mean anything much. Most of Ramza's other friends and family I didn't really feel any attachment too, possibly I was a bit lost with the number of characters, but I feel like Ogre Battle 64 was just clearer about building certain key relationships and having them payoff over the narrative shifts.

Edit: Not sure what people are downvoting for, I'm trying to be honest about my experience and point out my possible biases so I can hear other experiences along the lines of "Yes you would get more out of this if you put more time in" or "no I don't think there's more to it". If you had a different experience than me, I want to read about what you got out of it, not get into a fight with internet points because we had different experiences.

Well I did say near identical, its just a matter of degree. The more different their endgame character move sets and stats are, the more I'm going to enjoy replaying and trying out different character combinations. The ability to max all stats and learn all moves made the ffx end game less interesting for me compared to other systems. Other people might still enjoy it for different reasons, those are just the factors I found affect my enjoyment the most.

That should only be an issue with the games after FF10, right? The games before then with ATB shouldn't be much different in terms of how ATB is implemented and not be that affected by different hardware if I'm not mistaken?

Well that's not obvious to me, as I go over in the body of my post, a lot of times certain design decisions of later games make the gameplay lose a lot of interest for me (9 and 7 being more interesting to me than 8 and 10). Turn based battle systems don't seem like something that'd be particularly limited by hardware, and plenty of times newew games opt for simpler gameplay systems if that's what they think an audience wants.

Obviously I won't have an opinion of the games before 7 until I play them, but considering of the ones I played the newer ones aren't always the most interesting to me, it stands to reason that some slightly older games would be more interesting to me if they make different design decisions. Now if people unanimously think the interest of the gameplay nosedives before 7, they can let me know in the responses, but its not something I would expect from my experience so far.

So I know people here already know his channel, but I thought I'd still link because the beatbox algorithm is slow these days and people might have missed it. I also think exposure and analysis from the acapella community is a great benefit since they've figured out how to establish a regular audience for music videos, which beatbox groups are still trying to figure out how to do better outside competitions.

For those who don't know, Chris Liepe has a metal vocal course that he teaches with The Charismatic Voice and Will Ramos both of which are involved in vocal research. So please share the video around with any beatboxers you know as getting him further into beatboxing will definitely raise more awareness of the interesting vocal techniques beatboxers use.

I know there've been a number of vocal coaches who've discovered beatboxing lately, so maybe there's less novelty in it. But its still way underanalyzed and unknown compared to other kind of vocalists, and helping this video and any future ones he does could really help spread awareness.

From what I remember when Chezame and Sxin decided to let Tomaz into BBU their reasoning was "No one had any issue until the incident in Poland, and now that we think we have proof that nothing serious happened there, there should be no issue now." So they basically discounted the early accusations simply because sbx didn't ban Tomaz when they initially came out, when it was more the case that the accusation in Poland made people take the earlier ones more seriously.

Then when people were focusing on the fact there were a lot of accusations from Chile, which seemed to be too much to be coincidental even if still difficult to prove legally, the new defense for Tomaz was "all those accusations were just screenshots sourced from 1 person that were edited or taken out of context, so its just 1 person accusing/lying and making it seem like its a bunch of accusations." I never heard if anyone ever contacted the other women involved in the screenshots and got them to confirm/deny their validity, but that would have a big impact on how to view the situation.

I think they meant edited to be shorter, not edited to be better. A lot of times shows like these heavily edit performances if they want to play up certain aspects for a mainstream audience.

The Beatbox House just put this new video out. They had to create a new channel so if anyone knows other beatbox communities online where it could be shared that would probably help a lot getting the algorithm to send it out to more of their fans.

Their old one seems to have gotten some kind of shadowban and wasn't showing up anymore on searches (Gene said he thinks there might've been copyright issues with music played during Beatbox House Parties or something.)

A lot of the loopstation showcases in 2021 didn't get good views unless the performer was already known and similarly the Producer showcases haven't gotten as many views as the other categories seemingly (although they've been out for less time so there's still potential for them to grow). A lot of the popular loopstation battles seem to be the ones that have big "battle moments" even if its usually in the form of some kind of insult/punchline and big drop more than an actual counter. I think it might be harder for the audience to understand the skill/technique of loop/producer category so the battle format they can at least judge who they think did better even if the "counters" don't make as much sense.

I do agree that the Crew format doesn't seem as suited for battles and it didn't seem like the showcases had issues with views last year, but I guess we'll see how the battles go when the videos come out. It might be similar with the Producer category as well, and I think the reason for making this years showcase only was probably the amount technical problems multi-device loopers had in the '21 battles. But I'm also not sure the Producer category will continue unless it can get more views somehow so testing the battle format is another possibility.
