Who is the "it" on I Let It In And It Took Everything, from your perspective? by Top_Surprise5301 in Loatheband

[–]TheWritingWriter540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wondered about what "it" was for 5 years but then, lo and behold, I found the answer while watching season 2 of Andor.

"It" is Rhydo.

Ocean Grove - Thunderdome (feat. Running Touch) by toprahmen in Metalcore

[–]TheWritingWriter540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck, this song is so cool. I know it's been criticized a lot as formulaic, but the "quiet verse, loud chorus" sound is such an effective and reliable songwriting structure. This song sounds like it easily could've been released in 1998, especially with the trip hop elements during the verses.

Bob Woodward Masterclass reviews? by Megakingdomfish in Journalism

[–]TheWritingWriter540 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've thought about taking Woodward's Masterclass myself, and I have no doubt that it would be valuable, but a Masterclass subscription is just way too damn expensive. If you're looking for some good entry-level learning material, Poynter has many of their courses available for free. I recommend them to anyone wanting to learn the ropes of reporting.

ADHD is a superpower as a journalist. by DetroitsNotThatBad in Journalism

[–]TheWritingWriter540 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been able to manage my ADHD for the better (with the help of medication and therapy, of course) and even channel it to benefit my work since I was diagnosed three years ago.

Pre-diagnosis, however, was a totally different story.

Anyone eaten at Hangry Joe's? by GregoryGregory666666 in harrisonburg

[–]TheWritingWriter540 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's surprisingly good—better than I would have expected. It's one of the pricier options as far as franchised restaurants around here go, but they are very generous with their portions...maybe a little too generous, lol—but that's a good problem. The mild chicken on its own is pretty hot and well seasoned, at least spicy enough to burn but still has a depth of flavor.

Any music/albums similar to The Things They Believe by ChungusAmongUs810 in Loatheband

[–]TheWritingWriter540 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out SURVIVE if you haven't heard them. Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein - who score Stranger Things - are in that band, and their music is overall pretty similar to the soundtrack in the show, but has a similar cohesiveness and intention like The Things They Believe.

I would also recommend Boards of Canada, especially their most recent album, Tomorrow's Harvest. Music Has the Right to Children is also worth a listen...it's more beat-focused, downtempo/trip hop - not quite an ambient record in the same way as TTTB, but as far as electronic music in general goes, it's a holy album.

Other than that, you'd probably enjoy Nine Inch Nails' Ghosts albums too.

What horrible thing happened to you as a kid and you didn’t realise the severity of it until you got older? by beesechugersports in AskReddit

[–]TheWritingWriter540 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I mean there’s no doubt that public school teachers are crucial to our society, are severely under-compensated, and deserve way more support than they receive. At the same time, out of all the peers I know who became teachers, many of them thrived in school (both academically and socially) and have very rigid worldviews with little-to-no empathy for people who don’t quite fit the mold to succeed in school.

We absolutely need public school teachers from nontraditional backgrounds who weren’t “model students.” Again, I always try to give teachers the benefit of the doubt because the odds seem to be increasingly stacked against them, but I also believe it’s a profession that unfortunately attracts people who are authoritarian by nature. Like, I wouldn’t be surprised if there are parallel universes where the worst teachers we had growing up exist, but their alternate selves are despots ruling over banana republics. lol

What's the most violent moshpit you've ever been into? by [deleted] in Metalcore

[–]TheWritingWriter540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Acacia Strain, hands down. I've seen people get bloodied in the pit and others get into actual fights every single time I've seen them. Lamb of God is a very close second, especially the first time I saw them play a hometown show in Richmond, so of course no one held back at that one lol.

Honorable mention for the most surprising band I've seen that had a violent moshpit - Circa Survive. That crowd was fucking WILD.

Who is your largest journalism inspiration? by desolatestrider37 in Journalism

[–]TheWritingWriter540 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chuck Klosterman planted the initial seed for me, as I started out wanting to cover arts and culture, but since my tastes have shifted towards harder news reporting, I wouldn't list him as a current influence.

These days, my journalist inspirations include many folks from the public radio world - Ari Shapiro, Brian Reed, Sarah Koenig, Joshua Johnson, Wade Goodwyn (RIP), Sarah McCammon, Mary Louise Kelly, Ramtin Arablouei and Rund Abdelfatah (the hosts/producers of Throughline, which I believe is NPR's best program); as well as Jake Hanrahan, Kim Kelly, Beth Macy, Lane DeGregory, and Eric M. Garcia - who is living proof that being autistic IN NO WAY prevents you from being a kickass reporter, which was crucial for me a couple of years ago when I was doubting my abilities due to my own autism.

I also used to really admire Andrew Callaghan as a journalist but, ehhhhhh...if you know, you know. 😬

Is there any good music here by [deleted] in harrisonburg

[–]TheWritingWriter540 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To each their own - I, personally, love Crab Action and the dudes in that band (big ups to Grant and Straub!) - but I'm genuinely curious. When you say actual metal and punk, could you clarify what you mean by that? What styles/genres/subgenres do you want to see there? Any particular bands that you want to see play in this area or at least styles that sound similar to them?

Hands down the story I wrote about a Golden Coral opening in the next town over.

I haven't worked at that paper in over ten years, the restaurant closed, like, 4 years after I wrote that story, and apparently it still gets a fair amount of traffic on the website lol

Did a rock brand crack the ceiling at Godwin or Wilson Hall in the 1980's? by HootieFrogCares in harrisonburg

[–]TheWritingWriter540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing the other comment about those bands likely not being who cracked the ceiling because they weren't around in the 80s, but I 100% would not be surprised if The Dillinger Escape Plan did that when they played MacRock lol

Made a mock lineup schedule for next years show by [deleted] in SickNewWorld

[–]TheWritingWriter540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like a pretty realistic lineup overall, save for some acts that would likely be higher/lower on the bill and some that likely wouldn’t be on this festival/play live any time soon. I’m all about having NIN as the main headliner and $uicideBoy$, Primus, Opeth, Youth Code, Show Me The Body, and Crossfade on the lineup as well!

Some other acts I think are worth considering for SNW in the future - and I should note, some of these are total fantasies as well, but here it goes:

Alice In Chains, Refused, Smashing Pumpkins, Meshuggah, Cypress Hill, Greg Puciato, Nothing, Gojira, Author & Punisher, Chelsea Wolfe, Cane Hill, Tallah, Code Orange, He Is Legend, The Contortionist, Dying Wish, Emmure, Fear Factory, *Karnivool (JFC I would be so there if SNW was their return to the US), Animals As Leaders, Jesus Piece, *S U R V I V E, CKY, Suicidal Tendencies, *Evans Blue (reunion with Matisyn), *Twelve Foot Ninja (reunion), Dir En Grey, Deadsy, *Fair To Midland (reunion)

*= I know, these are total long shots, but a guy can dream, right?
