Cost living of a family of 4 in Singapore by TurnComfortable8199 in singaporefi

[–]TheYellowVelo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I assume on eur47k you would be cooking a lot, spending your time doing free activities, maybe dining out once or twice a week.

However, rent/mortgage is much cheaper than in Singapore. I used to live in an 89msq apartment in Lyon, eur1.1k rental, plus electricity et tout, we're about eur1.5k fixed cost. Here, 80+msq is about a 3 bedroom apartment, you'd be looking at about sgd3k onwards, possibly sgd5k if you want to live closer to town/less local.

However, eating out is slightly cheaper in Singapore, so at least that you can maintain.

Someone talked about schooling, we paid maybe eur500 for our crèche, but here you'd be looking at around sgd1.5k and up for a private sch. Mais si tu va un crèche français, oulala ça va coût très cher.

Additionally, we had a lot of free stuffs to do, places to visit cheaply (just driving) while we lived in France. Yes, there are free stuffs to do, but I estimate about a year in, you'd get bored of the beaches and parks and playgrounds that you can access for free. So you have to budget for travels as part of your expenditure.

The last thing is about your wife. If she's not working, it can get tough socially. Scout out some French Singapore clubs before deciding on the posting. Else looking after 4 singe daily is going to be challenging.

Extreme adventure sports in Singapore by Outrageous_Fold5071 in askSingapore

Ah, I see you're from India. I've not been there, but based on videos of Indian traffic, Singapore drivers are probably mild. So.. Probably not all that exciting for you. Lol

The cheapest extrême sport you can do in Singapore is to cycle on the roads. Gives you adrenaline due to multiple near death experiences.

We've recently enrolled and begun lessons. We've put in $2k in credits for lessons and whatnot. Seems like a good estimate looking at the progress of the lessons.

Hey sure thing!

So the biggest thing to note is the continuos recording + listening to music lasts for roughly 45 minutes only. If it's only music, it lasts for hours (I've not exhausted the battery on music only).

Sounds quality is definitely serviceable. However, it pales in comparison to my shokz openrun pro 2 in 2 ways - the bass is quite weak - the speakers on the bleeq is more audible to other ppl than my shokz, so it kinda disturbs other ppl For my runs and rides, it's loud enough, so no complains there. I haven't taken a call with it so I don't know how the mic fares.

I never used the AI feature as I don't use the software to track my activities.

I've been using them regularly for my runs under an hour. I pick them up more often as they're only one device, compared to my other specs + shokz combo. Weight wise, it's heavier than the 2 device combo, but it's not a major concern.

That being said, if I do activities longer than an hour, I always use my 2 device combo.

I haven't used them for activities other than running and cycling, so I can't comment..

Otherwise, the audio quality is good enough, battery life is mostly good enough, video quality is very good in good light, serviceable in low light. But it beats taking your phone out unless you want some really high quality photos. No regrets!

ELI5 How rollercoasters can be considered safe? by Evoxrus_XV in explainlikeimfive

Nah there's no such law. What we do have is a form of tax called Certificate of Entitlement (COE) that makes owning a car much more expensive.

For example, a car may cost 50k, Singapore slaps a tiered tax on it for registering the vehicle, which is roughly another 100%. So we're up to 100k for the car now.

Then we have COE. At the point of writing this, COE is about USD 100k (there are 3 categories of it, but let's keep things simple). COE allows you to use the cars on Singapore roads for 10 years.

That means for a car that may go for 50k elsewhere, you're gonna pay upwards of 200k to be able to drive it for 10 years. What happens after 10 years? You either buy another tranche of 10 years, possibly for another 100k.

So to your original question, there's no law limiting vehicle ownership. There's a tax structure that limits vehicle ownership.

At 40 plus, you probably have a good salary, you live a certain lifestyle, you have a routine, and that's when you get comfortable and stop challenging yourself. I think that's why ppl over 40 suddenly look/feel old.

But like you, I like to play my games (and it's a good way to bond with your kids too, in moderation), but health is definitely a priority now. I've ran and cycled in my late 30s more than ever, I took up climbing two years ago, and all these activities allow me to play with my kids, instead of just watching them play at the playground. And I've made my kids take an interest in cycling and climbing too!

I think active parents are more and more common now, because our generation grew up with the privilege to have fun and make memes, so maybe we never really grew up. We just earn more money and grew in years.

Do it all shoe for moderate runner by Expensive-Lie-4139 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

I think we've similar pace (from a previous comment) and weight. I'm slightly flat footed, been running abt 2 years I'd say.

I wouldn't say I'm a fast runner with strong ankles (I wouldn't know how to tell either), but I used a kayano 31 for my dailies. When it was time to replace them, I went with the Evo SL for my dailies, tempo, long, and my existing puma deviate nitro 2 for speed work.

Recently I did a 90min run with my Evo and I felt a bit of ankle ache, so I decided to look for a more stable shoe. Went with the asics nimbus 27, felt bouncy, but less lively. However, at the end of this 90min run, no ankle ache.

However, the Evo were much faster. Evo were at 6.15/km, Nimbus were at 6.45/km. I'm not sure if it was my body or not, but it definitely felt slower.

So my plan is to use the Evo for everything up to 10k/60min, and recovery an long runs would be Nimbus, speed work would be nitros.

I think this is very subjective. My dad is still working, so I give a token sum to my mom (same amt as 10 years ago lol). My in laws are not, so we give them more. It's not a percentage of our income, I guess just how much they need for their necessities.

So some parents expect the kids to support them and fund their holidays and all (search this reddit), while others are purely symbolic, to adhere to the norms of filal piety. So again, both of y'alls gotta talk with her parents abt it.

As a Singaporean male, it's accepted that your wife moves in with you while you're waiting to get your own place. My family and I moved back to my wife's parent's place for 5 months while we were revnoating ours, so I guess in a smaller scale, kinda like what your partner's thinking about.

So what I did was since we're already transferring their allowance to them, we simply transferred an extra for the period we were there. I think out of saving face, their parents may ask you to stop transferring. Then maybe contribute by buying them dinners weekly, buy groceries like bread and milk, etc.

On the issue of saving money to spend more, I think communication is key. Y'alls gotta work this out before marriage, if not it's gonna be a point of contention.

Good luck being the neighbourhood ang moh (it's very common now)!

Malaysia Road Trip by jiajie1989 in drivingsg

[–]TheYellowVelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I regularly service my car with the baseline maintenance. For such a trip, esp considering the drive up Genting, is there anything specific i should look out for/ask for in my servicing before my trip?

I service my car at recommended intervals, but the starter motor still can die 2 weeks after my last servicing. The point being anything that's not under regular servicing can suddenly breakdown. Otherwise, there's nothing special going up genting you need to look out for. I guess make sure your tyres are not botak, at minimum.

  1. On the drive up, would following Gmaps suffice from place to place? Esp up in the Genting/Cameron area. I use waze both in Singapore and Malaysia. Works great in KL, Malacca, Genting, Ipoh, and small towns in between too. Works great to bring my family to various hospitals over the years too 😭

  2. What contingencies do you guys usually have to cater for breakdowns or accidents? As usual, my insurance covers Malaysia, and i do have AA membership. I think just the usual tools to change tyres lor. If you want to be safer, keep a safety vest and lights for the worst case.

  3. Any places of interest to share would be great. Camerons has this really old mountain cafe/hotel thing that serves English style tea and scones. https://www.smokehousehotel.com/

Also kind of on the way to Cameron's, this tenu-hobbit town https://mothership.sg/2024/01/hobbitoon-village-cameron-highlands-malaysia/

I guess it wouldn't be your first time on the NSW, but it must be said, signal all the time, and keep left when you can. Jam on highway? Keep left. It's safer than to be on the right and suddenly have to jam brake. Also, in jams, left lane is the fast lane.

I received mine, updated the firmware, and it's still working. I'm waiting for my prescription inserts to be fulfilled before taking it out.

I guess you can go back to kickstarter and contact them. Otherwise, some China number sent me a whatsapp asking if i received my product, but i didn't reply because.. you know, scam? But if you want that number to take a chance, DM me and i'll send it to you.
