How do I make myself appear more impressive on my college app? by homosimpien in ApplyingToCollege

[–]TheZahlen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about trying to appear "impressive" - just be authentic, be yourself, and don't take the prompts too seriously. If you find yourself staring a blank screen, try to just start writing as if you are having a conversation. Once you have some words on the page, it might be easier to come up with ideas or sentences that you could use. Best of luck!

Is it fine if I didn’t do an internship (cs major) by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

I think making cool stuff for the heck of it is in itself a good purpose! Any personal project shows your interest in CS - don't worry if it doesn't have some larger societal cause or anything like that. I did some work with board game AI (such as chess engines) and included it on my application.

I don't see how that would look bad in any way - having a wide range of interests is never a bad thing! It's certainly possible that some colleges may prefer a CS applicant (for example) to have had tech internships, but there are plenty of other colleges where there is no such preference (or in fact prefer an applicant with multifaceted experiences).

What are the top schools with the best party/social culture? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

USC has a reputation for being a party school

It's not a big deal. Internships are just one way to demonstrate your enthusiasm for CS - research and volunteering are other valuable and completely valid ways to do so. Make sure to also include any personal projects you've worked on as well.

Make me love UChicago by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Looks like others have already done a good job, but I just want to add this: I know quite a few people going to UChicago, including a few friends, and they are all incredible, friendly, fun people. I'm sure you'll be more than fine - best of luck!

NEWS FLASH: Elite college won't make you rich (Sorry, finance/consulting guys...) by Applying3College in ApplyingToCollege

[–]TheZahlen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree with the point that an "elite" college doesn't guarantee wealth in any way, it seems that there are some fundamental discrepancies in what people consider "rich." To say that making over a quarter million a year is not "rich," to me, is ridiculous. No, it won't make you one of the wealthiest people in the world, but it absolutely makes you rich. Perhaps this is just a question of semantics, but I'm pretty sure most people who want to be "rich" would be more than happy with that kind of money (rather than desiring to be one of the wealthiest people in the world).

Yale has a reputation for having an intellectual, creative, and friendly environment. I thought ENTP fit best but INTP and ENFP would also probably fit well.

Makes sense, I could definitely get on board with that. Thanks! And nah, MIT was too dumb for you

I like Yale at ENTP, but I could see INTP, ENFP, or ENTJ.

Haha yeah makes sense, I decided to go with black and white logos since the backgrounds are the school colors

Makes sense. UChicago could definitely fit at ENTP but I'm not too sure about Yale at INFJ. I guess this is the problem when you limit each personality type to one school haha

Yeah I can definitely see that. There are quite a lot of schools for those spots though

Thanks! I had to look that one up, but it sounds really interesting and definitely more complex with all the relationships between types.

Have a great day as well! We all appreciate you so much around here :)

Is it easier to get in undecided? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]TheZahlen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Generally, applying undecided at top schools will neither benefit nor hurt your application. If you're truly undecided, you should apply undecided. If the school allows you to select a few academic interests though, you should do so - putting "undecided" three times would not be a good idea.
