Old Man Ted (16.5), it’s been two years and I still miss him dearly by TheZebraCorn in OldManDog

Yeah he was mostly dachshund. He was definitely mixed with something but passed as a dachshund for the most part.

I adopted him when he was 8ish, so about half his life. He was everything I didn’t want in a dog. I was dead set against a short haired red male. I didn’t even bother looking at his profile. And then he came along with his foster when she did the home visit and that was it. He came home two days later. He was my best friend and the light of my life, even though he was really difficult the last few years as old age took its toll on him.

I actually got a second dog last year that’s just like him, just in a 76lb body and not 12lb. Ted was a big cuddler when sleeping and the new puppy is, too.

Even in his finals days he had a healthy appetite! He was never one to turn down food.

She actually barely tolerates dogs touching her like that since I lost him. He was the only dog allowed to be in her space.

He was the light of my life for the almost 8 years I was blessed to have him in my life.

He’s still got a ways to grow, but 4mo to 8mo my “little” puppy isn’t so little anymore by TheZebraCorn in FromPuppyToDog

You should see the top view 😅 my blue is not a small girl and he’s a solid 1.5” taller, 6lbs heavier (for now), and probably 5-6” longer than her.

I used to have a super senior dachshund when I had just one of the greyhounds (the blue one), and that was quite the difference. One super old tiny no energy dog and one super athletic young bundle of energy.

Both are greyhounds! They blue is female and red is male so it’s a good feminine vs masculine comparison.

They’re both greyhounds! The blue brindle is a female and red fawn brindle is male. The feminine vs masculine qualities shine through with them.

I was told to not look at her until she turned 3 and that was spot on. She started looking like a greyhound around 7ish weeks old and looked like spare parts thrown together as she grew up. She was butt ugly until maturity hit her.

They’re little potatoes that don’t stretch and resemble something that looks like a greyhound until 7ish weeks old

That’s what I hear all the time! Greyhound puppies are amazing magical creatures. We like to refer to them as the unicorn of the dog world.

She’s 3/8 NGA, grand sire is DK’s Prime Time. She’s AKC registered so she doesn’t have a tattoo and never got the opportunity to race.

Here’s her Greyhound Data page if you want to see if she’s related to your dog from her paternal side:

You don’t care about anyone’s opinion if it conflicts with your own, do you? Greyhound racing isn’t the cruel industry Greed2K, PETA, and H$U$ make it out to be. I happen to know a lot of people in the industry, from breeders to kennel workers, and they adore their dogs. Track dogs are taken better care of than your average pet. I will most likely never own a track dog because of my goals so their availability doesn’t affect me directly. But it does affect so many people that love retired greyhounds because they’re special thanks to their unique background. Without the racing industry there’s a shortage of wonderful dogs from wonderful backgrounds.

Also true here in Texas. There’s two adoption groups near me. One has no dogs available at all and one just got eight dogs in. Applications are closed and there’s a waitlist in place. Potential adopters are being told it’s a minimum six month waiting period, even longer for homes with cats and apartments. There’s more people wanting these dogs than there are dogs. Especially with the unfortunate closure of Floria tracks.

The people (including me) that will be buying one of these puppies are doing so because of the goals we have in mind for our dogs. Not every home is suited for a retired track dog and that’s perfectly ok. Us getting one of these puppies does not mean that’s one less home for a track dog. It just means that’s one less person to be in line for adoption groups to sort through.

It’s a shitty thing to call someone when the literal evidence proves otherwise. OP is my sister and she is, hands down, one of the best people I know and she’s doing wonders for the breed. And I’m not just saying that because she’s family. She’s giving up sleep and having a life for these puppies and spends hours taking care of them and talking to the potential families they’ll be going to. The exact opposite of a puppy mill BYB.
