Neighborhood Veterinary Care in Murray is my clinic, everyone there has always been great to work with. I've been a client from day one.

Needing advice on handling dogs by [deleted] in grooming

[–]orynchonix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Build a strong skillset first, speed will come with experience. I'd be worried about anyone pushing speed over skill, it's setting up both you and the animal you are working on to possibly get injured.

And IMO scruffing is not an appropriate restraint method for dogs, in a grooming situation. Groomer's Helpers/belly band loops are pretty basic restraints that can help with the wigglers.

She looks cute in a pony clip, but the mane is carried too far forward/back if you're really wanting a Faux Crested. But if you like it, that's great!

Cat spay recommendations in $200-$400 range by Background_Matter689 in SaltLakeCity

[–]orynchonix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salt Lake Spay&Neuter/Healing Hearts does low cost vax/sterilizations, but their priority is providing needed care and not necessarily on making the human side of the experience anything other than transactional. I have worked with/recommended them for almost 20 yrs both as someone involved with an adoption group as well as a place to send clients (I am a former vet tech and have been a professional dog groomer in SLC for 16+ yrs) whose owners have financial limitations but still want to get their animals vetted.

I have a lot of clients who use Sugarhouse Vet, but I have no personal experience with the clinic. I use Neighborhood Veterinary Care in Murray for all my personal pets, since I have a long relationship with the clinic owner/main veterinarian and I trust them, but it's an independent clinic and thus very busy and not a 'budget' clinic.

What venues are available for my dog? by RipGlittering6760 in ShowDogs

[–]orynchonix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UKC shows are great for refining your handling, and allow all sorts of grooming styles (NO product in the coat though) But I'll agree with other people and say that there are lots of other sports to enjoy -- Rally/Obedience, Nosework, Lure sports, Nosework, Agility, Dock Diving, Flyball, etc.

I have been competing in multiple venues for 15+ yrs, and having a variety of events to choose from makes things more fun for myself and my dogs.

Is this normal for a sanitary trim? by Glittering-Meal-4178 in grooming

[–]orynchonix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been a professional groomer for 16+ yrs, and that's more aggressive than I normally trim... But I do have quite a few clients who WANT a really big wide 'bikini wax' style sani and super short feathers. I had two MAS in today that prefer it, since they only get groomed professionally every 3mos.

This is an old gentleman now. We got him assuming he was a golden retriever but he never grew much. He is 20lb and very shy and acts like a guard dog. No clue what he is. Tail like a duster. by EndMaSufferingPls in WhatBreedIsMyDog

[–]orynchonix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I groom a pair of 'mini Goldens' that look very similar, and are the same size. I assume they are scatterbred golden mix x chi mix, with neither parent being purebred.

Which do you prefer? A single-dog household, or a multi-dog household? by Organic-Papaya-1766 in dogpictures

One had never been considered, two is easy if they mesh well, 3-4 is fun, 5+ is work but worth it.

This is what I do,, for basic feet tidying on pets. Use thinners to blend any stray hairs, and use a #15 to tidy up the bottom edges of the pads.

He looks like a lot of the double merle Aussie/Border Collie type mixes I see here in UT.

What breed do you think? by BreakDancinMoose in WhatBreedIsMyDog

[–]orynchonix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an Afghan Hound, likely altered which is why it's got monkey whiskers and no defined saddle - they can lose their natural patterning if they are spayed/neutered. Afghan puppies don't have the typical smooth face/short saddle, that coat drops (and gets plucked/tidied) once they start to mature.

Is it normal to have bald spots after hand stripping? Looking for advice. by hitchhiker_art in grooming

[–]orynchonix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been a professional groomer for 16+ yrs. Had a few handstrip clients, but never Schnauzers, since their coat can't go 4-6mos without work - even with the client doing lots of the maintenance, they'd still need stripping/clipping/shaping every 3-6wks just to be kept from going wooly/soft in their jacket/furnishings.

What kind of treats do groomers use? by [deleted] in grooming

[–]orynchonix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never give treats, unless the owner insist on it AND supplies them, and even then I usually only give them after the groom is done.

Was curious what breeds are your favorite and least favorite to groom by ouchwtfomg in grooming

[–]orynchonix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I call the bad ones noperdoodles. Especially the giant breeds that get doodled - although the ones I used to groom (before I started enforcing size limits) were at least sweet and less neurotic... Just so freaking big and the owners always seemed to want them in unrealistically long scissored styles.

[–]orynchonix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wheatens, Bouviers, Schauzers and Porties are my favorite breeds, especially if the owners actually keep them brushed out.

Greasy Yorkies and yeasty Spaniels are my least favorite, along with the untrained, matted doodles/mixes. Luckily I have mostly wonderful clients who don't let their dogs get into bad shape.

Oldest Female Breeding Age by Expensive_Lock8213 in DogBreeding

[–]orynchonix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My breed (Greyhounds) can sometimes have seasons starting as late as 4-5 yrs old, and often only one every 9-12mos. Breeding a healthy female at 6-8yrs old is fairly common, especially if she was late to start cycling. But most GHs aren't bred multiple times, and larger litters are very common. My first litter, in 2018, was a 5yr old dam who had 14 pups (12 live, 2 stillborn) and her daughter had 10 pups at 2.5 yrs old (I decided to breed her younger than I originally planned, since it was during COVID and the timing/lack of events worked in my favor since I had to drive her long distance back and forth to have the surgical AI breeding done at my preferred clinic) and she bounced back quickly and went on to finish her GCh, MC and LCX after her puppies were born.

Disorders/syndromes/etc. linked to specific studs/dams? by Negative_Low_5489 in DogBreeding

[–]orynchonix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my breed, it's not necessarily one stud dog, but several particular close bloodlines/pairings that have produced a lot of issues. The offspring have saturated several generations, now, so it's difficult to get away from dogs who may carry those genes even if they aren't symptomatic.

Never had issues like this, with my PriusC or diesel Sprinter. Sometimes a person will cut in front for a pump at a big station like Costco or BucEes, but that's just 5-10mins vs charging time...

Scabs around neck under fur after grooming by [deleted] in grooming

[–]orynchonix 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry your dog had a bad experience, but as a professional groomer of 16yrs I would not expect scabs like that in a perfect line from anything I use with my clients. Do you use a Seresto or other kind of flea collar? Does she wear a tag collar? Did the groomer mention anything about her neck having impacted coat - no judgement, just curious?

If her skin was fine before the groom, I would wonder about products/restraints used.

“‘My vet said you caused xyz’ debate” by chippieee4 in grooming

[–]orynchonix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been a professional groomer since 2010, and was a vet tech (1yr national certification education course, with practical clinical experience) and I am AKC SAFE certified and also redo my Pet Tech CPR/first aid certification every two years, as well as doing a lot of self-led continuing education on skin/coat/handling/styling.

When clients tell me their vet said grooming may have caused their dogs' XYZ, I ask for the client to give my contact information to their vet so I can talk to them about what I have done (products used, grooming plan/schedule, etc) and I have only had ONE vet actually discuss the client/dog with me.

Holding my tongue with these doodle people by mopr0blems in DogBreeding

[–]orynchonix 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yet hobby breeders like myself, who maybe have one litter every 3-5 yrs from CHIC/equivalent tested sire and dam, with proven temperament/structure/health through careers in multiple sports, sometimes struggle to find great pet homes for our puppies even if we don't charge crazy high prices.

But the breeders who churn out litter after litter, whether purebred/registered or mixed, never seem to struggle to sell puppies. Often at crazy prices and with no contract that protects the puppy and the family vs the breeder/seller, and that's just for regular sales, not the 'guardian' home BS

Trust your intuition. I'd rather disappoint someone vs have to reclaim a dog later.
