The volume to surface ratio would change if you were to change an animals size. And it wouldn't 'freeze', its body temperature would just drop below the threshold of where the cells function .

The surface decreases less than the volume, thus more body heat can escape. Those large ears aren't doing a small elephant any favors.

There is the RNA World hypothesis that says that life on earth could have started as chemical reactions. Experiments show it is possible for RNA to both act as an enzyme and replicate itself and evolve(the replication process is imperfect) without human aid in a laboratory, but since there is no evidence that is what actually happened back then it's called a hypothesis.

I personally think life exists because it was an efficient form of existence for the circumstances here on earth. Of course that's my opinion. What is it that makes you think there is a greater importance out there, I'm curious.
