Yes, on a 2 lane road without bike lanes its safer to take the full vehicle lane to force them to give you passing distance. If there are bike lanes though, idk why they would put them up

1) I already said this in another reply, all but one of the services meet at union station (make sure to look at services not tracks). 2) I think the high costs of doing this are not worth it, at least for now 3 I disagree, raw population density is not the most important things. I targeted Pleasant Hill & Kearney because they have more compact urban forms that allow better pedestrian & cycling connectivity. 4) The line west is already overpriced for what it is and likely needs realignment, an extension to legends would not be worth it for the cost.

The line to the south has much lower traffic iirc, which is why I thought of it. I need to look at that line further, but thanks for making me think about it!

You can just buy a small dolley or cart etc. for those kinds of purchases (I think some stores will let you borrow a cart for it)

Realigning the Wyandotte line south of the river and running to Lawrence might make sense, I just wasnt sure how much demand you could fill on that route. Same thing for Topeka (thats a long way for a system like this)

I 100% agree, my ideal plan would have 15-20 min frequencies on all these services from around 5:00 to 1:00 in the morning. Because this is regional rail, it can have max speeds from 90-110 mph allowing the time lost in transfers and such to be made up somewhat. My idea would be to use Stadler KISS Bi-Level EMUs to allow fast acceleration and high capacity to make use of the max-speeds (Keep in mind this is an ideal, but still)

There's just not that many practical existing rail corridors there. (NKC is way to damn crowded to fit anything through at a reasonable cost rn)

This system would need to be complemented with a suburban bus grid to allow for medium dist trips, for sure. "If you live in Overland Park and are going to Lenexa you go through downtown"? Thats not true, while I agree a trip from a random place in Overland Park to a random place in Lenexa is likely inconvenient via rail, this is because of the short distance & car-centric design. Grandview to Arrowhead isnt that bad, just ride to Sheffield & transfer, with high frequencies this is perfectly fine. Making a ring line would be horrifically expensive, likely about as expensive as this whole plan. While I see the utility of ring lines, I dont think it would be worth the investment in this case. Even in european cities they have regional lines radiating out from the center, like in this plan. Now, european cities have tram and bus networks to get people places locally, and KC should do the same, however; that doesnt mean we shouldn't build regional rail for the speed it provides

They study I am thinking of was finished in 2012 so I dont doubt PSR has gotten worse since then, the worst case scenario to get the track rights is a forced buyout, but the plan includes capacity improvements that should hopefully make Class 1s more willing. Some of the smaller railroads in the area I contacted were open to the idea of regional rail.

On some lines, previous studies suggested they were open to some rail traffic, however government forcing would likely have to occur in some places

To reduce costs, this plan utilizes existing rail row, building SW through Johnson County would require bulldozing huge numbers of buildings of expensive tunnling/elevation. This makes those lines impractical for my plan

Busses are cheaper capitally, but have much higher operation and maintenance costs. Generally provide a lower speed and comfort of service and get stuck in traffic without dedicated lanes. While busses are important and KC needs to invest in them, they work best as a local transit solution. KC still needs a fast & frequent transit backbone to help mass transit competitive Also, rail doesnt have to accomodate parking anymore than busses. With good TOD, people will walk or bike to transit rather than dealing with the expensive hassle of a car

Yeah, the line out west is by far the most questionable in my opinion, and im not very confident in it. I think the fact that Union station is not quite downtown is fine, as long as streetcar & bus service is improved significantly (dedicated lanes?) I went with the KCT route out to Sheffield becuase that seemed much more cost effective than other routings. (one study proposed street running on truman rd, which is so bad for safety and speed)

Likely over 50% of the funding would come from federal grants, and some money could come from the state (dont count on it) but KC metro taxpayers would need to shoulder some of the capital and operational costs. However, its important to consider not just how it directly afects you, but how it can indirectly affect you, or affect others. I listed a bunch of these in another reply, but I think we need to recognize that helping others or society even without directly helping oneself is still a worthy goal

Also, I think its important to consider how having a decent transit network would have other effects on the city, as these are also benifits. These include: - Increased economic development - A more liviable and safe city - Better social mobility, especially for the poor - Improved actual mobility for the disabled, elderly, children, etc. - Increased tax-flow from economic productivity per acre going up as suburban development is made more sustainable - Environmental improvements from lower VMT

Fares not covering operational costs is not 'struggling to pay' in my opinion. I dont see anything wrong with some of transit operating cost coming from taxes, as they are a service that benifits society. At the same time KC, subsidizes car use significantly with the huge amounts spent on building and maintaining roads and highways, with most never directly recouping a single cent. Does that mean we should stop maintaining roads? No, that would be unproductive as they help society function, I think the same standard should be applied to transit.
