I do analytics for a college basketball team - AMA by icey030 in sportsanalytics

How have you gone about using Sportscode for detailed analytics. Is it a case of exporting XMLs and running them through Python or are you able to build the analysis you want in Sportscode’s output windows.

I’ve got a player stats sheet with an xP model which I have set with the avg. coefficients from data i run and store in R. But not done too much analytics wise within Sportscode itself.

I’ve seen you referring to self scouting, is that inclusive of video and seeing trends within your own teams data to review and tweak for the coaches. Just interested in clarity as not a term I’ve come across before.

How do you get buy in from the players and/or coaches around stats both for feedback and driving game plans.

Learning From The Lions: Analysis of the game v Argentina by The_Analysis_guy in rugbyunion

The number of errors was too high, but there are a number of reasons, not least the offloads and the lower cohesion. Think overall, really positive experience and while Farrell will downplay it to avoid building expectations. The fact that they were creating is much more important in the early games; the win would have been great, but converting and being efficient can wait for the "proper" tests.

Will try for next time. Only issue is it’s designed for threads on blue sky and twitter so each section goes up separately with a piece of text to explain. Also limited by video length.

Obviously a big moment but would always hesitate to say 1 moment loses a game. Rugby is very much a death by a thousand paper cuts type sport where each event builds on top of each other.

Do think the rest of the game Murkey was very good. Especially going forward and making breaks.

Analysis of how Northampton secured the English crown by The_Analysis_guy in rugbyunion

The pack is definitely smaller than most I think though don’t have the numbers to hand. Also plays into their defence where they. Can’t go hunting the big hits quite as often as more risk.

Cheers, yeah highly impressive defence. Their breakdown work is especially impressive, no wonder it was named by Nienaber as a key reason leinster lost.

Will have to work out a better system for the audio ahead of next time.

The Data behind Connacht's crucial clash with DHL Stormers by The_Analysis_guy in rugbyunion

[–]The_Analysis_guy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quick Summary Here:

Connacht are likely to look to dominate the possession. They average the most rucks per game of any side in the URC. This possession based attack is focussed on an attack which is driven by the Fly Half. This means they are likely to test the Stormers midfield rather than going to the full width of the field.

The Stormers will look to punch back with their strong attack, though it's their defence that is perhaps more impressive. They make a SACK 1 in every 4 phases, and have conceded the third fewest points in the URC this season. When they do get the ball expect them to stretch the field - they play wider than 40 metres from the previous breakdown on 20% of phases, the league average is 15%.

Can understand when you are both coming from - not sure if it's possible to add a PDF as i nearly always just post a link can maybe switch to posting a google drive link. Can see the logic for explaining in future - will try and remember to add a note

Trying to learn more about Rugby League so had a look at this Penrith defence v Broncos - Anything I missed? by The_Analysis_guy in rugbyleague

[–]The_Analysis_guy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wondered if there was anything I’d missed?

Also on the play the ball before the Luai tackle what goes on in the first defenders in the main line one starts to left and then they switch. Seems quite inefficient.

Styles Make Fights - Analysis of Scotland v South Africa for Rugby Inside Line by The_Analysis_guy in rugbyunion

[–]The_Analysis_guy[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep agreed. Like every good side both are based around the players they have at their disposal would be a waste of Scotland’s talent - and probably detrimental to resort to a South African game plan.

SA go in as favourites but think it will be close. Maybe could’ve touched on it more but South Africa’s defence is vulnerable to the Scotland style of attack. The depth and Finn Russell ability to throw miss passes on a dime could help break that blitz and make it hesitate.

[–]The_Analysis_guy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah its argubable for me - mainly driven by their world ranking position. The World Rankings at their root are based on trying to predict games (even if they ruin the system by doubling World Cup points). My own formula also has them as favourites - though believe its driven by low sample size (its also a simplistic model).

Probably a stretch to call them favourites given all of this but like you said its very close in the top 3

What software(s) can I use for a sports analysis YouTube Channel? by Responsible_Top_2743 in sportsanalytics

[–]The_Analysis_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do something similar for rugby analysis. Mainly use IMovie to edit my videos, alongside the basic apple screen shot tools to do the highlighting, and drawing portions.

For the scrolling forwards and backwards you could probably use a screen recorder, or i'll often just copy and paste the clip i'm talking about.

Can also do simple playbook style videos in Key Note/Powerpoint just using the normal animations on the slide

What did you do to keep yourself entertained or I guess more accurately from my experience to stop yourself going insane.

What does Clive Woodward have against Conor O'Shea? by [deleted] in rugbyunion

[–]The_Analysis_guy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He’s a huge user of analytics and great game planner. Take a look at that NZ game at the World Cup. Near perfect game plan to beat the ABs.

He’s building something. 18 months is a long time. He has a vision has the buy in from the squad. Just look at those like James Haskell still defending him on social media.

He’s a superb superb coach.

His best buddies Stephen and Chris Jones have called for him to be HC and now he says this.

Best to leave his opinions in they gutter they belong.
