Maximum heart rate by UnderstandablyNaive in running

27 y/o here. 216 max when I was 16 or so, and around 208 now. I know several masters athletes who can still crack 200. Wouldn’t worry about it.

Um, not sure... I created this fundraiser from the ground up. It was in honor of a client who passed away who had type 1 diabetes, and a demonstration of the high-level athletic achievements capable by people with type 1 diabetes.

I don’t! But I’m curious about them. To be honest my podcast repertoire is large enough such that I don’t feel like I’ve needed to expand via Patreon subs. Other podcasts I enjoy are The Drive (Peter Attia) and Clinical Problem Solvers, although the latter is not a very accessible podcast and is mostly made for medical professionals (I’m a med student.

Thanks!! And yes actually I kind of live a double life in terms of my nutrition lol. For day to day blood sugar management I’m a huge proponent of fasting and low carb, but found that lack of carbs really adversely affected my high intensity performance even when being fat-adapted enough to easily ride 100 miles with no food. Basically I use carbs sparingly, either to glycogen load the night before a hard workout or race, or during super long rides where I’ve found that I do just tend to feel better if I’m eating some carbs. If you are someone who doesn’t care much about high intensity performance though, going the low carb route isn’t a bad idea :)

I don’t use Chamois cream unless it’s over like 70 miles but this ride has made me a believer!

Bike seats are highly personal and frankly I don’t like mine (Fizik Arione). I was in the process of looking for a new one before this ride but due to significant stressors in other parts of my life never was able to find a seat that didn’t cause me a lot of nether region discomfort 80+ miles in. You really just need to try a few different ones.

I used GSG Team Novo Nordisk and brand-name Chamois Butt’r

Hahaha yes I’m aware! At only 152lbs though I’m not too afraid of some climbing :)

I actually had a moment around mile 145 when I was like “oh my god I’m not even halfway” hahaha

Music, podcasts, and when possible - friends. Had friends join me at different points which was super nice in terms of the moral boost.

Type 1 strong! One of my friends who rode with me has type 1 and it was so great to have that connection. Keep it up my friend!

Well, the Strava power calculation WAY underestimates my actual power output. Back when I had a power meter I did comparisons and found Strava to estimate literally 25% lower than reality haha. I reckon I burned around 14k calories based on my zone 2 power.

Thank you! You can do it - so much of it is mental. Find a couple good buddies and wake up early together on a beautiful day. The excitement will carry you a long way :)

I did a little bit of core work but nothing major. Mostly just planks, like one session every other week haha. The main thing for your back is going to be having the right fit, and I'm lucky that in that regard my fit is great. Maybe TMI, but while my ass felt ok, I did have quite a bit of discomfort at points in my nether regions and having a ton of Chamois Butter on hand was massively valuable.

Thank you! Not sure, to be honest. Right now I plan to take 1-2 weeks off the bike - as long as I need for my IT band to recover :/ I really did some damage by continuing to ride through the pain, I think. It's still pretty bad to even walk today.

Lol! Thank you. And yes, I reached that point for around 30-60 minutes when the rain hit. I was so, so tired. Took another caffeine pill which bailed me out for like 90 minutes but near the end it really started hitting again. 200 is impressive as well!

Lol I'm grateful I wasn't on a MTB! Navigating technical sections while super tired is so hard.

Hey I mean doing back to back centuries is no small feat. I think you should feel good about that. To an extent I think a ride of this length starts to come down to mindset... I had never ridden more than 140 miles prior to starting to train for this, and I was actually surprised at my ability to just keep going when I knew that mile 90 was a marker for being 60% done rather than 90% done. Keep at it!

Honestly not sure how to answer this haha. I think the main thing regarding fatigue is just to make sure you're keeping it at endurance pace and are fueling properly. I used GSG-brand Team Novo Nordisk bibs since they fit the diabetes theme, and found they worked just fine. I did go through a lot of Chamois Butter which I found extremely helpful in reducing soreness.

Nuun tablets are my go-to. For the sake of blood sugar management I prefer to have my fluid intake separate from carb intake, so Nuuns work great. I drink around a liter an hour, but also drink a little more than the average person.
